Wink Should I sell my Speedy Mono 30 to upgrade to Vivienne Long Epi?

    Hey guys,

I'm a newbie with LV bags. I had thought I was immune after years of hearing my girlfriends talk about LV, Gucci and Coach, and not buying a single item. However, things changed in June when I went to the LV store in Paris Champs Elysee. I bought my first LV bag - a Speedy 30 Monogram.

Now, the thing is I realised what I really wanted was a Vivienne Long in RED Epi Leather. I am thinking of selling my really new Speedy 30 and trade up for the Vivienne Long. Given the RRP of Speedy is 700 in Melbourne, what can I expect for it? Also, other than Paris, is Melbourne a good place to get LV Bags? How much does the Vivienne Long cost in Melbourne? Singapore bags seem to be much costlier - the Speedy 30 goes for SGD1,000 - which is about AUD813?!

I'm leaving Melbourne in a few days to accept a job offer overseas so this will be my last chance to sell my Speedy 30, and buy my Vivienne Long Epi if that's what I should do in Melbourne.

    Advice & suggestions please!

p/s: I can get the 10% GST refunded at the Melbourne airport right?

    Hi and welcome to tbf!!!

Congrats on your LV purchase and sad to hear that you want to sell it... I'm from Melbourne and LV's here are more expensive as well, probably a bit less than Singapore, but still more than what retails in the US... The best place to shop for an LV is probably the US or Japan IMO... and I believe that the mono speedy does not retail for AU$700... but $875 or more... If you're in the Collins area, better pop by LV and ask how much the Vivienne Long Epi is or better yet try it on to see if that's the one you really like. The SA's are really helpful so you would have a wonderful time...

I'm not so sure about the GST though... I think I heard from somewhere that you can refund GST but I'm not so sure... HTH!

Sad Re: Should I sell my Speedy Mono 30 to upgrade to Vivienne Long Epi?

    Thanks for the warm welcome!

I didn't realize that Japan and US are the cheapest for buying LV (perhaps due to the weak dollar?), my stewardess friend has always told me it was France. I did realize however, that buying from other EU countries are just a bit costlier than France, so it's still worth the buy.

At this moment, I really don't want to spend money on an additional LV, which was why I thought of selling it and upgrading to a Vivienne Long or even a Speedy Epi. Do you think people would want to get it at.. say $650? Since I bought it in June, it's still very new and the handles are a very light beige.

I'll see how I go then. Would be really nice to have a red Epi Leather handbag for my new work in Shanghai!!! *although my girlfriend jokes that everyone will think that it is a fake!

Is it really true that it is cheaper in the U.S? Maybe my math is not so good, but let me ask you girls this... I got on LV.com and put my new bag in the cart, put in my old address for California for shipping, and went through the check out up to the last page where I actually have to put in the CC#. The total cost with 20$ shipping was 1,828.62. I bought the same bag here in Germany for 1080 euros, that is including the 19% sales tax here, and when I got home today I did the euro to dollar exchange for this amount and it said 1080 euros is equal to 1581.82 dollars. So to me it seems I am saving a little over 200$. Am I doing the math wrong?

Sorry for budding in on this post!!!!! I would keep the speedy, by the way!

I think the cheapest place to buy LV is in France...then the rest of Europe (because you can get a VAT refund and you do save some money) and the United States (esp. Hawaii which is cheaper than the mainland US)...then Hong Kong (but only select models; I think some models in HK are higher than what you'd buy in the US or Europe).

Japan is actually one of the highest priced places to get LV unless you are going to a pawn shop. Even then, you'd have to really look because some brand new/gently used (ie, 85-100% mint) LV might be more expensive than US retail.

I say...sell the speedy and get the Vivienne Long!

US seems cheaper... maybe it depends on the sales tax of each state.... but yea compared to Australia it is way cheaper..... Speedy's there retail for about $700 while its about $900 here...

What I meant about Japan is if you wanted a preowned one, Japan is the way to go, but yea I just remembered someone saying that retail there is much higher...

    Welcome to tBF!

I personally won't sell the speedy, but if you need to sell it, I personally would buy it for $650 as a new one retails in Australia for $905 (I bought my 30 just 3 weeks ago). But most of the newer speedys sold on ebay go for about $550ish. Tough market.

France is the cheapest place to get LVs. Singapore is slightly cheaper than Australia if you convert the currency. Plus when you leave, you can claim about 6.5% GST back at the airport.

If you get it in Melbourne and want to get GST refund, you need to leave the country within 30 days and you get 9.1% back at the airport. There are fees that you incur so you don't get the full 10% back.

    Good luck!

Blush Re: Should I sell my Speedy Mono 30 to upgrade to Vivienne Long Epi?

Wow, thanks for all the responses! Well, my heart at the moment says to go for a Epi leather one as it's more "corporate" looking! I can't afford to own both at the moment (even if my bank account did, my conscious couldn't) as I am moving out of Melbourne - flying off Friday. I can't get tax back in Singapore as I am Singaporean.

One word of advice when getting LV in EU - get a CASH refund! You may think you prefer a credit card refund so it's in your home currency, but it takes 3 months before you get credited, I would rather have my cash back and not fret about it!

If anyone does want to buy my Speedy, contact me. It's really new. If that happens I can engage my shopping assistant (actually my ex-boss who is going to Barcelona next month) to get my Vivienne Long!

p/s: I thought of working for LVMH so I can get discounts! But if only I could speak French...

Yeah, my mono speedy 30 is coming unfortunately. Good luck with the move and enjoy your Vivienne Long when you get it. Let us know what Shanghai is like cause my DH kept raving about wanting to work there.

Btw, I'm from S'pore too. But my DH is British so he gets to claim GST for me in S'pore.

Oh, for future note you can't sell stuff on the general forum. You need to do it in the marketplace. And you can gain access after being member for 60 days and with 200 posts.

Opps sorry about that! I didn't know about the selling stuff bit. wouldn't happen again! And how nice to "see" a fellow Singaporean. Adrianne, DH =... Darling Husband? I heard Shanghai is like Singapore 10, 20 years ago, when everything is dirt cheap and expats get great packages. I am not exactly going there on an expat package, but I think for less that what I would spend in Melbourne, I will be having a very good life.

I'll let you know once I get there! But first, back to Singapore for a couple of weeks to settle my visa issues and all. I don't think I will have time to go check out the Collins St store since I am flying off tomorrow. I don't really like Singapore's Ngee Ann City outlet. The Parisian one is fantastic! I mean, I wasn't even planning to buy an LV bag but... ...

p/s: I need some advice. My Speedy 30 is always out of shape. I tried putting a sort of a "base" for it, but doesn't work very well. Should I get those "shaper" from eBay or ???

speedys sag thats the way they are, you don't have to buy a base shaper for it though, just put a magazine or book in the bottom and that will decrease the sag... HTH!

DH = Dear husband or Dumb husband. Depends on what he's done that day. LOL!

Yes, do keep me posted about Shanghai. DH wants us to move (with 2 kids) there for a bit and take advantage of the booming economy. Apparently nothing is impossible there.

I heard that Ngee Ann City LV has snobby SA's and the DFS one is better. But of course, there is always Paris.

About the speedy, I personally think the sag is great. Or you can get the all in one shaper. But I thought you were selling it?
