Default Okay...I'm officially in love with Forever 21. I admit it.

I was in NY this weekend for some family/friend beach time and the boyfriend and I had to make our bi-annual trip to H&M. Well of course I'm out a few hundred bucks later and he got some KILLER pieces (he's such a handsome devil - he got a beautiful double breasted cardigan, a button down and a great blue sweater). As we were heading towards Off Saks 5th in the mall, we pass by Forever 21. Now I was into this store when I was like 15...but ever since then I felt it was too "hoochie mama". I decided to give it a whirl and WOWIE! They really do have some adorable stuff and everything is under $20!! I got these awesome skinny jeans with this beautiful teal wash for $19. I bought a bunch of jewelry too. So sure enough - I walked out with over $100 of stuff and really made out well!! I'm so impressed. Now I might actually start shopping their online site - if it doesn't make me dizzy (the store did overwhelm me a bit).

I got to be honest - I'm getting pretty exhausted at seeing these $100+ for a shirt prices. I mean, working in the fashion industry. I know exactly the labor/cut/make/trim cost for a garment - I know the cost for yardage and for trims and what-not. And I can fully assure you that anything you see at 95% of these stores are complete rip-offs. I used to try and be like "no...I mean it's totally worth it" but after seeing some of my high-end garments get just as destroyed in the wash or with regular wear as my way low-end garments - I'd rather keep my cash in my pocket.

^^ if you had to say certain brands are worth the extra price, what would they be?

I usually shop at JC Penney's and Kohls myself...I'm a bit too curvy for forever 21, but I think I could find some cute tops there that would work. I also shop the occasional Macy's or Dillard's sale...

    Susie,
I know those exact jeans as I bought them in the purple color too.

    Nash,
I would say that all Vince cashmere are worth it, Manolo shoes, Joe's Jeans, my Chanel black skirt suit... that's all I can think of right now.

well as far as what's worth it and what's not - that's on a case by case basis. I mean I look at Marc Jacobs stuff and love it all but then the fact that the fit on ALL his stuff is so terribly off - it's like "if I'm paying $400 for a shirt and they can't afford to hire a decent technical fit designer, something here is very wrong".
    Ya know?

As far as jeans are concerned - I will say there are some techniques that require full hands-on but even then the jeans shouldn't cost over $150. My friend works at Levi's and told me that the denim industry is DISGUSTINGLY over pricing everything and taking in a massive margin.

I hate to say it - but even LV is overpriced for what it is (although I can assure you - there are MANY other bags out there which are way worse).

It's tough because I can literally break down the entire cost of a garment/item/etc and let you know the REAL value of it - but then you are paying for:
    1) someone's idea/design
    2) their own financial risk on purchasing the materials and labor for the item to either sell or be a total loss of money
    3) and their own effort to get up every morning and make sh*t happen

so maybe there's not much physical value to an item but maybe it is worth it if you think of what the customer is willing to spend for those things.

I usually shop on their website instead of actually going in the store. It's so much easier, than sorting through everything. Plus, the website has categories and I go straight to new arrivals.

i think you can find great stuff at forever21, but at the same time almost every piece i've bought from them has fallen apart. it's a little sad, but then again, when you pay so little, it's kind of expected.

I've heard so many good things about H&M that I couldn't wait to go to their store in San Francisco. But when I did, I was a bit disappointed.. Their tops fit too loosely and the material is very thin. I suppose that's expected when you pay 12.00... Maybe I should've given their other stuff a chance? I just have to say, I wasn't impressed.

I usually go to Forever 21 for occasion dresses. Not super nice ones but cocktail, going out dancing type dresses. I hate wearing my dresses once I've been photographed in them (silly, I know) so it's dumb of me to spend lots of money on something I'll only wear once! (Also, I've found Forever 21 to be much more bearable when they first open..Everything is in its place and it doesn't look like people went crazy in the store! Either that or definitely shop online.)

I will say - while H&M and Forever21 stuff does have a tendency to fall apart - so have my $$$ garments too which is what makes me go nuts!! My Paper, Cloth & Denim jeans ripped within like a MONTH and my Paige are destroyed in like 5 months - while my cheapo Abercrombie & Fitch jeans have been holding up wonderfully!! Although with denim, the more treatments, the more $$ and then the more "brittle" it can become.

I have a few old Forever 21 pieces that amazingly, have held together very well! While my expensive James Perse shirts are getting major loose threads. So it's a crap-shoot. Yes, you cannot expect too much from $20 jeans but don't expect much more from $300 jeans either.

I think I'm also getting a little nervous about our economy so I'm trying to spend less on things I don't "need".

I have an Ann Taylor Loft suit that is fabulous...and I have some Casual Corner stuff (but they went bankrupt) that is wonderful as well.

When I got my first job out of college, it was at a public accounting firm and you had to either wear a pantsuit or skirt every day...very formal...and so I bought a lot of stuff off from eBay...I got my Ann Taylor suit for $10, and it's a lot more expensive than that!

Now, I can wear pretty much anything anyday excpet for Jeans/tshirts. As long as I look presentable...I am just a corporate accountant/senior analyst so it's nothing that requires talking to clients or those outside the company. It's much easier on the wallet too!

I know LV is a little overpriced...but you have to admit that the techniques and quality is higher than most. Coach is VERRRRY overpriced...especially with their operations mainly in China

ya Coach is totally not worth it - my friend worked as a Product Developer there and hated the place anyway.
