    Post Newbie Suffering Analysis Paralysis!

Hi all. My birthday was Saturday, and my family all pooled together and gave me $300 to buy a handbag. They were thinking Coach, since that's what I was looking at at the time. I went to Dillard's and Macy's yesterday, and am just not sold on any of the bags that I can afford.

So then I find this site, and realize that I know nothing at all about handbags!

A little about me--I'm a thirty-something stay-at-home mom who in no way wears cool clothes or anything. Right now I'm trying to pay off the $#(^%&$ student loans, so my play money is pretty much nil.

I've always liked purses. I used to buy 4-6 a year, all under $60. Now it's maybe only 2 a year, and they're still the cheap ones.

I'm wanting something that's fun, but won't look totally out of place with my jeans and 12 yr old minivan. I want it to wear well and not date quickly. I was thinking a satchel style, as I don't really like having to do the "Mary Poppins looking in the carpet bag" thing to find my keys like you do in a tote or larger/taller bag. I like to carry bags on the shoulder, and prefer something that zips on top (only not the 1/2 zipper top that so many of the Coaches seem to have). It can't be too small, as it really needs to be an every day kind of bag.

Yeah, I'm asking the impossible. I realize that no bag will do everything. But I just don't even know where to start, and I'm already hampered by the spending limit (which I could probably go a little over). Can you give me any suggestions as to designers, particular bags, and where to buy?

    Thanks!
    Caroline

Well... have you considered a LV Speedy? Let's see: Durable? Check. Timeless? Check. Satchel? Check. Top-zip? Check. Shoulder Strap? Well, you can get one to attach to it. LOL!

Seriously though, it would be an excellent investment on your part. And if you don't mind a "previously loved" bag, you can usually find one in the $300 to $400 range. I believe Let-Trade has a 25 for $360 right now, but I have seen 30s. Just a thought.

    Hey, Caroline :)

If you're liking a satchel, but like to carry the bag on your shoulder, be very choosey when you shop Coach because their satchels always seem to have a short strap drop. And you're right, the fact that the zipper isn't always designed to connect on the ends is kind of a pain. I had a Coach satchel like that and ending up walking around with my purse unzipped most of the time.

    Good luck in your search!!!

Have you thought about going to a large upscale mall where you can try on Coach, Vuitton, along with other designer brands? If you are only going to get one really great bag you shouldn't rush to a quick descision...

I'm going to Seattle the last weekend of April. I thought I'd spend a day downtown, go to the Nordstrom there, and I think there's an LV on University not far away (although I can't afford one, really). Then at least a day up at the Premium outlets--there's a Coach, Burberry, Juicy, etc.

Anywhere else in Seattle I should go to look for an entry level designer bag?

Thanks for the tip! I went to Dillard's on Sunday and tried out a bunch of their Coach purses, and I felt the same way. The Carly, the Madeline--just not quite enough room on the shoulder straps. And that's without a winter coat! And I hate going around w/an open bag--makes me worry that somebody's going to stick their hand in while I'm preoccupied.

I highly recommend the LV speedy. It is a GREAT everyday bag and olds up very well. Have you looked at the Dooney and Burke All Weather collection? Those are also great bags that hold up to the elements well. I used to live in Gig Harbor so I know about the rain there
