    Default Help! I'm 40 and it's my 1st bag!

    Actually the title isn't totally accurate, but I haven't carried a purse/handbag in almost 20 years (I've been just use my pockets or a backpack or bookbag). I turned 40 recently and I've decided to grow up and try it again. But I have no clue how to do it! My problem is, I have no aesthetic or preferences and I don't want to spend hundreds (certainly not thousands) until I get a better sense of what I like and what works best for me. I do NOT want to look like a dusty grandma or a silly teenager or a wannabe, but I can't tell what kind of bags say what! Right now they all say NOT IT! If possible I'd like something versatile and stylish, but not too trendy. Any suggestions? Are there shapes or types that I should definitely stay away from? Thanks very, very much....

    I guess it would first depend if you would like a shoulder bag or a hand bag? If you are used to a backpack then I would say you would probably be more comfortable with a shoulder bag.
    I would suggest you go to a local dept. store and try different bags on until you get a feel of a style that you might like.

    Thanks for the quicky reply, Zombiegirl. I actually did go to several dept. stores (bloomie's, filene's, century21) and tried on a million bags and I've been looking throught magazines and online, studying. I bought one, but my husband said it looked like an old lady's bag so I returned it. The second one was a subtly metallic (satchel?) but then I couldn't imagine using it so I took that back too. I have, however, learned the following:
    (1) I like handles that are just long enough to wear on my shoulder but I don't like long straps;
    (2) I don't like shapeless sacks;
    (3) I'm probably not ready for patent leather;
    (4) the bag's gotta be easy to use and be big enough to fit a book.

    But I still can't tell what looks stylish and what looks stale or too young or old....

    Ok, the Marc Jacobs Venetia or Blake is a great bag with handles that are large enough to fit over the shoulder. It comes in a variety of colors and is a very classic bag for all ages. It's not too flashy and does not scream designer.
    Of course there are thousands of handbags out there to choose from.
    What is your price range/budget? That will help.

    at the age of 50...my mom loves her Coach bags. she gets the solid leather ones (similar to the one in my bag collection post) and she loves them. they aren't flashy or trendy - but cute and classy. just like my mom :)

    What about LV? You can't go wrong with a classic mono!

    Good suggestions! Thank you all kindly... I have been looking at those Marc Jacobs and thinking about Coach and LV too, but (very regrettably) I think for my first trial I would like to keep it under $150. I know this is rather tight for a good bag. Glad to know I'm on the right track though.

    Also, I just took a look at the bags of various members here (susieq mentioned that her collection is posted), and that's been much more helpful than just looking in stores and at ads. So thank you for that too!

    Perhaps we can help you find a good deal on a used bag then. You'd probably end up with a better quality bag that way.

    Hmm... maybe something along the lines of MBMJ or Michael Kors? I've seen used ones on ebay for about your price range. Or Coach of course, you can always find cheap Coach (as you may know from the thread in the Coach section).

    Excellent idea. I did see some threads about buying bags online from individuals, and I'm giong to check them out (and the Coach thread) and start looking on ebay. If I have doubts I'll be posting them here for expert opinions! Thanks boysRsmelly. (Guffaw! Love your screen name!)

    I've got one of those too (husbands) and he does get pungent rather quickly... I'm looking through the members' collections and I find I'm being pulled toward those Fendi spys. NOT that I'll be getting one of those soon...

    I bought a bag! I have to wear it around my apt. a few days before I know if it's a keeper...I'll try and put up a picture soon. It's a "Made on Earth for David and Scotti" I picked up for <$200 (orig. $558). Never heard of the brand but it seems like a good deal and the leather/craftsmanship are excellent. Yay!
