Default Re: How has the economy changed your shopping habits?

Totally! My dh got a terrible bonus this past Jan. that's it, I'm done, I'm just not shopping unless it's a necessity, like clothes and shoes for my kids or baby gifts and birthday presents. I have plenty of clothing myself so I'm not buying any clothes except for a couple of spring fill in things. Fortunately we're able to pay our bills, tuitions for schools etc. but I'm totally buckling down compared to the way I use to throw it around. Where I live summer camp is very expensive too and I know people who are not sending, just can't afford it. For me I always send my oldest to camp bec. he has high functioning autism and thrives in it, but this is the first year my middle guy, he's 5, is skipping bec. he doesn't even like camp and his best friend isn't going. We're going to do tennis lessons and swimming lessons instead and my parents live close by and they have a pool so we'll be busy. I am confident though that things will get better and by being smart with money will pay off. My dh's company he works for is doing well, but they cracked down on their generous bonuses and so he's taking home less now which makes me feel very conservative how I spend, but dh said he thinks the next one will be like normal. I'm disappointed especially about the bonus decreasing bec. we used to be able to pay the school tuition in full every summer for the upcoming school year, dh would do that first thing after he got his summer bonus and now with the paltry size of the bonus we'll be doing pay installments, it affects your psyche a bit when you can't pay for things like you used to be able to.

I too find myself a little 'on edge' right now. I haven't been layed off but i notice my bills getting a little more overwhelming and I ask myself how to pay for the essentials (food, rent, insurance) and still have a little left over for goodies (shoes/bags/clothes).

The news depresses me and scares me at the same time. I don't know if its just me or if a lot of people are feeling the same.

I've actually bought more things but not at retail prices, either 70% or more off OR preloved items.
I've noticed that the second hand sites in UK has had an overload of designer items(people are clearing closets or cashing in for various reasons) and it's selling for really low prices as most people are not buying luxury items. For eg my latest buy Jimmy Choo shoes at 68 pds with shipping, RRP was 200+ pds(it was worn once for a wedding, just minor marks on sole, no marks elsewhere and came with box and sleeper bag!)
If you have ready cash or savings specifically for these type of items, this is the best time to buy
This is why economists say during recession the rich get richer and the poor get poorer(most, not all) as the rich have ready cash and can buy real estate, businesses, stocks etc while they are really cheap and can afford to hold them till the economy improves and sell for huge profits
I'm slowing down though as DH has put 2 feet down and clamp down on spending till our anniversary.....He just found out abt the Choos

I am a bit scared too with this economy in the US. My job seems to be secure for another year . They have closed several schools here in Chicago but my school hasn't been targeted yet even though it is a small school. My school does have high test scores so I think that is why we haven't been targeted . In the last few weeks there has been some transfers in (students from private schools -- I think their parents have pulled them out because of the economy). My fiance' works for a privately owned retail company (no stock /share holders) and the man who owns all the stores seems to know
how to keep everything in check.

As for shopping -- I haven't been buying as much as I normally do. I usually hit up stores on the weekends and buy an extra pair of shoes , a top, a dress etc. etc.
I have always been a bit "thrify" but I would say so even more ---
Now I have only been buying the necessities and something IF it is really really on sale for a good price. I also have been saving more money (even though the banks are not giving out good interest rates anymore) to be cautious.

I had intentions on buying a new car this year - I have saved up enough for a good down payment plus a small amount for the trade in , but my car only has 60,000 miles on it and it is over 7 years old and in good shape -- so I guess I will keep her !

Oh and Texlatina -- You are not alone --I think a bunch of us are a bit rattled by all this ---

Well I feel insecure at work right now therefore at this moment I enjoy everything that everyone buys!

I have to be grateful for what I have. Unfortunately I was getting to a point in my job that I was ready for change and that may not happen as the job market is bad and my company is under restructure so many people are going to be terminated soon. Np bonus or salary increase this year. And my stress levels are really high. So if you see me around posting like a maniac just think that this is a stress relief.

It's pretty scary how much things have changed in 2 years...It was the worse time for me to get pregnant, quit my job, go to school, and then i had to buy a new car...Last year seemed a lot worse than this year though...Gas prices were so bad and we were spending a little over 120/week on gas for our 2 cars and I wasn't working...the price of electricity, sewage, and our mortgage went up also...If I would have known back then what I know now, I would never have purchased this house...I cut back by not eating out and drinking water, which is actually better anyways... I wish DH would stop eating out, but he will never stop going out for lunch, i just think we'd save so much $ if he'd bring lunch... I unplug everything when i'm not using it..and I buy bulk and will get a generic brand if I can...But cutting back on eating out will save a lot of money...so that worked for me...just not DH....Hopefully we can sell our 3rd car since we're not using it and we can have some extra $...

One thing that did change that I forgot to mention is that we were putting x amount of money in our kids savings accounts, but we've had to reduce the amount, which makes me really sad, but i know we'll make up for it when I finish school...

Well SuperMom Cruznit I agree with you. I only go out for lunch on Fridays ( I have to and I was even thinking about going every other Friday) and bring lunch the other days and I tell you it does make a difference.

I drink a lot less, eat out a lot less (I've lost like seven pounds, so I'm definitely not complaining) and I haven't gone on vacation since December.
If love is the answer, what is the question?

That's really, really true. Good stocks like Home Depot are trading at like 3 dollars a piece, it's normally like 25.

Me too...I usually go to Florida 4 times a year....last time there was in November, and i'm not sure when we're going again...We were supposed to go to St. Lucia also, but that's cancelled...I forgot about that..probably because I can do without the vacations...Just don't feel like traveling anymore...

Yeah. I was on edge, but too little too late for that right now. I haven't really changed my shopping habits, but I did lose my job in November (was 5 months pregnant at the time), and I can't help but think my pregnancy had something to do with why I was chosen out of so many people to choose from to be let go. Quite a few of my coworkers lost their jobs, and I feel really bad for them. Fortunately, my husband makes enough money that I don't have to worry about finding another job. I think it's nice that I get to stay at home with my baby (16 days to go and she should be here!!). BUT I think I may eventually find a part time job just to fund my bag obsession so that I don't have to spend money my husband earned on luxury items.

Save...save...save...it's not a rainy day that is coming but a storm which the world has never experience before...save every cent and every penny...

    and most of all...

It's time to bend our knees and pray...to draw near to God who is our only HOPE, PROTECTOR and PROVIDER....
