Default I'm thinking about getting a MAM...

I thought I wanted to get another JC bag, but after realizing the one I wanted was slightly similar to a RM MAM, I started looking around at RM's and now I have a few questions.

What is the difference between a MAB and a MAM? Which do you recommend? How do they hold up?

I would really like simple black bag that is classic, I need a work horse. I carry a lot of stuff in my purse so it needs to be versatile. I rarely get dolled up, it's mostly casual clothes for me, with a few cocktail dresses in the spring/summer months. Suggestions?

I know a lot of you are die hard RM fans so, that's what kind of got me leaning in this direction. I love JC, but I'd like add a new branch to my collection.

The MAB is VERY large, FYI. I think the MAM is the perfect size. When I had a persimmon MAB, the quality was great, the leather was really durable - I ended up selling it because it was just too big. I think if you can score a MAM on ebay for less than retail, go for it! Personally, I wouldn't pay full price for one.

About a color...you say you want black?

Yeah, I'd like a black one, with silver hardware (do they even make one like that?). I've seen a lot of the basket weave style, but I'm not really fond of that.

^Hm, I know there is a noir (black) nikki with silver hardware. Not sure about a MAM. Most of the hardware isn't like a really GOLD tone though.

I've been looking around at posts regarding the MAM and does the structure of the bag break down a lot? I'd like it to retain most of it's shape if possible.

OMG, that is a fantastic price. Thanks Jess! I'm going to keep an eye on it while I research a little more.

I wonder how big a MAB would be in comparison to my JC? It's pretty big itself. I'm 5'7" and a size two and it just looks huge in pictures. I like big bags, but there is a fine line between big and HUGE.

The leather will break in depending on the leather. My persimmon MAB had sort of a stiff-ish glazed leather...so that wouldn't break in. I'm sure the black MAM would break in since its leather is already smooshy.

Here's a modeling pic of the MAB. I am 5'7'' and a 2 as well, lol. It's also a very wide bag...so it's uncomfortable to wear under your arm.

Hmmm... well, I have the Nikki and it is huge but sits nicely under my arm. I can carry everything in it though, which includes my kitchen sink.
The MAM is good too. I haven't seen the MAB personally, but the MAM is fine for my needs.
Do you have a Nordstrom near by?

Ha, I wish there was a Nordies close. I think the closest one is Dallas? I can't remember. Tulsa has a Saks and that's about as good as it gets for Oklahoma.

I really like the look of the MAB, considering your my size (I think my calves are wider, but whatevs). It looks just right, but you can never tell until you see it in person. I'll keep looking, maybe one of the boutiques carries RM in OKC. I doubt it, but sometimes a random little shop will have a designer you never thought they would. It's worth a shot. In the mean time I'll keep looking.

Thanks for all your help guys, I really appreciate it.

The only difference between the MAB and MAM is a few inches. However, those few inches make a world of difference! I would have to agree with Jess and say the MAB is huge; I've owned 2 or 3 and used only one of them a couple of times. There is so much space in the MAB, that I felt silly carrying it with just a wallet and makeup bag because of all the extra room. Then, on those occasions that I had a lot to carry like a water bottle, books, notepad, wallet and more, the MAB was so heavy, that I regretted even wearing it out in the first place. Long story made short: Some gals love the MAB and it is perfect for them but, after trial and tribulation, I have discovered the MAM is perfect for me.

It all depends on the leather. Some leathers from RM puddle into a smooshed out blob when the bag is not filled; others retain their shape and structure and hold up very nicely. I like both =) If you want one that is more structured, I would suggest looking at the bags that are made of smooth, slightly glossy leather right now this season.

Thanks Gung, I'll keep that in mind. I do like big bags, but you guys are the experts on RM's so I'll def. take your advice on the MAM in to better consideration. Honestly I just carry a small JC make-up bag, a long clutch, my camera, my DS, my phone, about 5 glosses and whatever assortment of crap I have leftover from the day before in there. I really like the bag Jess found on ebay (link at the top), what are your thoughts?

CRAP! IT'S GONE! The MAM I was watching ended?! Way early?! How does this happen? It wasn't supposed to end until Thursday, I think.

^^ It was the one Jess posted, the link was at the top. It was a really, really good price too. I'm so very torn, now I'm leaning towards the JC China C Satchel. I just don't know which one to get!
