    Default Waterproofing your bag

Hi everyone! Does anyone know of a good waterproofing solution that is not a spray (e.g. the Apple Leather Care Spray and Stain Repellant)? I'm a bit nervous about using a spray, because of the hardware on the bag. Any advice is appreciated!

Lovin my bags has a good one; here is the link Lovin My Bags Store for Cleaning Handbags and Purses

All of their products are exceptional!

Edit to add: The Apple products work great on RM products. Dont worry too much about getting spray on the hardware, just wipe it off and you will be fine =)

Thanks, ladies! So if you get spray on the hardware, it won't hurt the brass, gold, silver or whatever the heck it is? I'm afraid that I'll somehow ruin it (like it'll turn colors).

I spray it all over my bags HW and all. It hasn't bothered any of mine. Just make sure that you spray in a light sweeping motion. Less is more, you can add another coat after the first one dries. HTH!

For those of you who have used the Appleguard - does it protect from light rain spots?

It has worked well on my bags.
It is best to reapply every 2-3 months. I spray all of my bags! I wish I would have known about it a long time ago!

What kind of RM bags are we talking here? Some RM leather doesn't need to be waterproofed at all but at the same time, there are some that absolutely need it

Hmm...let's see. Well I recently got a Navy Nikki from a SO over at TPF. For some reason, I was expecting pebbled leather, like my mini Purple Nikki. However, it's a new texture that is unlike any of my other bags. It feels Suedeish without being made by Suede! I feel like the blue is just going to slide off the bag, but interestingly enough, after I conditioned with some Apple Leather Care, none of the dye came off, which is a good sign, but I am still nervous nonetheless.
Then I got a Sideral Grey Devote a while back. As soon as I conditioned it with ALC, it turned darkish in some spots and now there are two white streaks across the front, and the back seems like a slightly sturdier textured leather than the front which is where all the problems occurred. At this point, I really can't do much to fix it, so I figure, at least I'll waterproof it, and it shouldn't create any more ugly problems.
With all the money spent on purses, my theory is, better safe than sorry!

PS: I ordered the spray that ya'll suggested! Hope it comes soon and doesn't freeze or explode in the mail!

    Hi rusararu =)

For the two leathers you mentioned (Navy Blue and Sideral Gray), I would recommend waterproofing both. This is just my advice of course, others may disagree. I owned a Navy bag a while back and am pretty familiar with the consistency/texture and it is porous and would benefit a great deal from a good waterproofing/treatment.

About the Sideral; that's the tricky thing about lighter leathers. You think they will "take" the same as dark leathers and you go ahead and treat them and realize youve made a booboo! (Ive done that before lol) Its best to test a small patch of the leather to see how it takes to the chemical composition of the treatment you are adding. I once owned two Stone MAMs in my possession and tried using a conditioning product on one of them to my dismay, as I realized that the waterproofing had very slightly darkened the handles. I still own the one with the darkened handles and over time, it has evened out, so it may be of benefit for you to wait it out and see how it matures.

Since then, Im pretty careful with my lighter colored leathers. In any event, I would give it a couple of days to dry and then gauge the end result. Some waterproofing/conditioning treatments can remain damp inside the leather for far past a day. It ought to lighten up then. If not, send me a PM and I might be able to help you lighten the spots with stuff from your regular household kitchen! =)

    HTH!
