The every 3 years thing (it might vary by state) is just the government being stupid, IMO. I'm not sure about the other vaccines though. I might have to look feline distemper and stuff up.

EDIT: Okay, there is an immunity test for feline distemper as well.
Most vets won't let you walk in their doors if the animals aren't up to date on vaccines. It's for the "Safety" of the other animals in the back. I went through this with my crew because I didn't want Henry (18) to get them. I understand thier side, but it's really frustrating just the same.

It probably depends on where you live and what the laws are too. Like around here, the law is that an animal has to vaccinated for rabies every 3 years even if it is an indoor cat that is never exposed to other animals. I think the law is ridiculous because many cats can become immune to the rabies virus for life after just one shot. The extra shots are just the state being stupid.

Sitting at home, leg propped up, and not being able to walk very well.

I fell down the stairs leaving work yesterday. I was walking down the stairs with a crockpot in my hands, going to my car in the parking garage, and I tripped I guess. Crockpot went flying and broke into a bunch of pieces. My leg started hurting on the 20 minute drive home, and when I had a chance to look at it I had a huge welt. Over the next few hours it got almost the size of my knee, so my parents too me to the ER. Yuck. I had never been. I got x-rays, and nothing was broken, thank god.

So now I'm limping, sort of, when I can actually walk. My left leg has 2 knees at the moment, haha. My right ankle has a small bump/bruise on it, and so does my right knee. I'm such a mess!

brs- According to the vet, all animals in our county have to get that shot yearly. . even if they never go outside/strictly indoors. And since Watson has to get groomed, it's not really an option.. he has to get it . I actually called around and found a petco that would actually groom him (45 min away .. but he needed it).. at first they said they couldn't, then I explained to them the whole situation.

lilstrlett - that's awful! sorry to hear about your leg..

lilstrlett, sorry about your leg! Hope it gets better soon. How fortunate you didn't break anything.

I'm waiting to go for running class in an hour. The weather's not looking good though.

How is he with the grooming? I have a long haired cat now and she needs to be shaved down. There is no way I'm going to do it but I wonder if a Petco would. She doesn't have claws but has teeth and isn't afraid to use them.

I like petco, they always do a good job. They've never complained to me about Watz biting them or anything. I think if they're worried about a cat attacking them, they tape them up. Sounds cruel doesn't it? My sister use-to work at a Vet place when she was in highschool, and I remember her saying they would tie bad kitties paws together if they had to bath them..

If you call and set an appointment, be sure to ask if they have someone qualified to cut your cats hair. Not all petco's have a cat groomer.. like they have to be certified and everything.

Watson usually gets the works: brushed, bathed, lightly saved (like 1/4 an inch), nails cut, hair trimmed inbetween his toes (it gets super long), ears cleaned his bottom shaved = all for like only $60. And he always comes home looking to pretty..

OMG! A rabies vaccine every year? That's insane! LOL! I guess we can only hope that one day policy-makers will become wiser in all of this. How sad.
Anyway, I'm surprised none of the groomers around here require proof of vaccinations. But if you take an animal to a strange vet and you don't have any proof with you, then they will give them the shot before treating them even if they really don't need it. I think it has to do with the vet keeping their license to practice though. My cat just got an extra shot a month or so ago because of this.

My state has the same law. We need to get rabies vaccines yearly. When Bailey bit a baby possum my vet made him get another one even though he just had one a few months prior.

I go to Petco for the grooming & they keep a record of vaccinations on file & they always check ahead of time, because even if it's 1 day late (like yours Jennifer) they won't take him.
