Default Alice + Olivia Designer Wears Fur, But Is a Vegan?

Alice + Olivia Designer Stacey Bendet Doesn’t Eat Animals, But Feels Glamorous Wearing Them

Alice + Olivia designer Stacey Bendet, who launched M.A.C.'s alice+olivia collection at Beauty Bar last night, arrived in a head-turning red number topped with a Mongolian Lamb vest, one of her own pieces. She looked pretty awesome, but the designer admitted to us that she has somewhat mixed feelings about the fur pieces she makes. "I'm vegan, actually," she said. "I don't eat [animals], I don't put meat in my body. So every once in a while I think it's okay to wear it. But I made it — I'm probably going to hell."

She continued: "I don't feel that guilty wearing it. I don't know why. It doesn't make sense. But something about putting it inside me feels really barbaric. Something about wearing it just feels a little glamorous." Lucy Sykes, who stopped by with her husband, Euan Rellie, to congratulate Bendet, noted that Kelly Bensimon, also in attendance last night, espoused a similar philosophy on fur during a Real Housewives episode. So would Bendet be on reality TV, like fur-wearing Bensimon or fellow designer Rachel Zoe? "No," she said, without hesitation. "I really like to be alone. And I also really like designing clothes. Being a celebrity is a job. Those people want to be out there all the time. I'd rather stay in my room and make collages. I'm a designer, I'm not a celebrity."

I know there is a debate on whether fur and leather is the same thing because you're wearing an animal either way, but wearing fur grosses me out. I just feel like since she's a vegan, she shouldn't be wearing it. If you're trying to stay away from all animal products, how is wearing them ok?

What are your thoughts on the subject?

By definition then, she is not a true vegan. If you are vegan, then you do not consume or use animal products of any kind. So I guess that would make her a hypocrite because she should be practicing what she preaches.

There is a separate debate about fur and leather though that isn't really vegan-related. People oppose fur because it is taken from cute furry animals that were raised for the purpose of skinning them for their fur. People argue that leather is not "as bad" because the cow or goat or lamb or whatever was being made into food anyway and the leather is simply a by-product that shouldn't be wasted.

    What a hypocrite!!

What ticks me off is people appearing holier than thou but changing whenever it suits their convenience.

I am a vegetarian because i was raised that way (for religious reasons),and today even though i have the choice to eat meat if i want to, i don't feel like it. I wear leather bags and shoes and always have. Expecting the whole world to be vegetarian or vegan is ridiculous. The planet can't sustain it.

Fur is way worse than leather, nr 1 as BRS mentioned the fur industry kill animals only for their fur. Nr 2 the way they do it is barbaric, i have seen horrible films of animals being skinned alive, which they "have" to do, otherwise the fur will get ruined if they kill the animal first!

    (completely agree with BRS! )

Although, there are multiple definitions of "Vegan" out there: "a strict vegetarian who consumes no animal food or dairy products" but there are a couple which include all of the above, "A vegetarian who eats plant products only, especially one who uses no products derived from animals, as fur or leather." If you believe the latter, isn't that like saying a "Vegetarian" doesn't wear leather or buy fur products?

Some people don't eat meat because it's their personal choice, it could be taste. When I was growing up I didn't eat meat from the age of 7 to 24, but that was because I just didn't like the taste of it.

I know everyone is going to have their different views on the topic, but personally I think fur is beautiful.

And to those of you against. What about re-cycled / re-vived pieces?
