Local animal rescue workers have volunteered to help treat birds affected by the slick and to collect data that would also be used to help calculate penalties for the spill. But federal officials have told the volunteers that the work must be done by a company hired by BP.
From this NY times article. Which is apparently why the animals aren't being helped. So sad.

Wow, that is so depressing, and to think that this is getting worst and worst.

It is so devastating that I can't even comprehend how horrible it is. I can't believe they are not letting volunteers clean up the wildlife. It is going to take a whole lot more than a company or a village or a government to clean it! I just saw NOAAs presentation on how the oil could spread... we are talking not just the gulf coast or the entire shorline of washington but MOST of the eastern seaboard as well.

I don't think this is true. This is something BP wants us to believe because they don't want people to see what is really going on. They stand to lose a lot in this, so of course they are going to want to keep people away. It's really sad, especially for the wildlife. The Pres. needs to step up and place the clean up efforts into the hands of the local governments down there. They desperately want to start cleaning stuff up.

It is awful. Yahoo had a pic today of a dead bird completely covered in oil, floating....
