    Default need some job advice!

hey ladies (and gentlemen, if applicable), i'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but i just wanted to get some opinions from those of you who have been around the career world for some time.

i am in the process of finding another job closer to home, with better work/life balance... and i think i found a company that i will really like with a super laid-back atmosphere. keep in mind... i'm a pretty career-oriented woman and so i can't just be at a dead-end job. this company is growing exponentially, and i think there will be a lot of opportunity for me if i take it.

that being said, the job i was offered is not that glamorous. there are certain things that i will have to do that are very mundane, but other things i will also have to do that are challenging. it's just that they are in such a phase of growth that this is the responsibility of this position at the time.

i left accounting about 6 months ago to pursue financial analysis, so at that time, i took a roughly ~25% pay cut. however, i'm getting back into accounting right now because of personal reasons. i want to spend more time with my family and just really not face as much pressure at work. so, the offer i have isn't as much as i was making prior to leaving accounting. but the economy is much worse than it was when i left and because i'm in the Seattle area, i'm about to face the competition of hordes of employees from Washington Mutual that may be laid off.

so... should i take this offer, which is less than i was making before, and be satisfied with the work/life balance i'll hopefully have? the employer doesn't seem to want to budge on the base salary. they threw in a small signing bonus, but i prefer the salary. any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Well, I haven't been in the career world (I'm a student), but I personally think that I am really grateful for my Mam being around a lot while I was growing up and I think that having a better life/work balance will make up for the fact that you are taking a pay cut. Then again, you have to do whats best for you, you don't want to get say ten years down the line, look back and think that you've missed out on your career or your family. I think sometimes people can give the best advice, but if it doesn't suit how you're going to feel in the future then the best thing you can do is listen to yourself.

I think a pay cut is worth being happy with your life. That is, as long as it's not going to impact your life in such a way (financially) to make things more stressful.
    Good luck!

Having the perfect balance of work and family is a challenge in and of itself. Like rach said, you don't want to look back and regret that you didn't spend enough time with your family or working on your career. If you think you'd like the job and get to spend more time in your life outside of work and the pay cut is not that drastic, I would say go for it. Nowadays some people are just lucky enough to have any job at all. Best of luck in your decision.

If the pay is enough for your living, spending and saving, in other word, there wont be a financial burden if you take this job, i would say go for it.

A happy working atmosphere is really important, I think it's priceless. I don't want to get paid 10k a month but worries about my job, or i might be replaced or gossips...etc... I rather get paid less but i'm happy.

I like a job with no burden, when i leave for the day, i don't have to worry too much.

What is important is that you are happy with what you are doing, not the amount of $$$. We can't make any decisions for you because only you will know whether this is something you would like pursuing or not. I guess just go with your gut feeling on this and don't worry about the pay cut if what you want is less stress and whatnot.

    thanks ladies...

well, i think i'm starting to feel better about the pay issue, but now i'm not sure if i'll enjoy the job. it's something that is totally new and i don't have any experience in it, but because the company is so small there is so much opportunity. i keep trying to look at the long-term picture and i have no idea where it could go if i take this job, because it wasn't in my "plans". ack!

Look hon, follow what your heart tells you, if it were me per se, I would take the job with lesser pay if it means I'll have more time with my family... But then again thats just me. hihihihi. IMHO, try this new job being offered to you and see how you go... If you're not happy you can always go back to what you used to do...

Good luck in your decision!!! We support you

Imo, which isn't worth much, family comes first. So if you have a lighter, less stressful schedule, I say go with that. Budgeting can always increase to help with espenses and if you are making more than what you have been doing now....
Also, any time you go into a new job you have to prove youself and work your way up. If you go in with a smile and a "Can do" attitude, they will be happy to raise your salary at your 6 or 12 month review.
    Whatever you decide, good luck.

Glad that you're feeling better about the pay. You're making a wise decision to want more balance between your family and career. I know that my priorities have changed since I've had kids. I use to chase the next promotion and the next increase in pay and work til all hours, but since I've had kids, I've told employers that I need to leave work at 5 and I only work 4 days. And with that, I don't get paid as much. But it sounds like a great opportunity for you in a growing company as you would get more involved outside your role and who knows, if they see that you're keen and willing to muck in, they'll be open for salary increase down the track when the company is doing really well.

And in the economic climate at the moment, take the job and if you don't like it, you can always leave.

In this economy, my decision would not be based as much on the salary or work/life balance as it would be the outlook for the company. What industry are they in? Who are their major clients? The credit crunch is going to hurt everyone, and even though your particular employer may be seemingly strong, a major customer or supplier could have difficulties that would shift to you.

I would assess the companies. It's not so much about building a career right now, as it is keeping yourself afloat.

    That's just my opinion.
