Default Do you spend beyond your means?

I'm just wondering - is there anyone else who has spent beyond their means, whether it be occasionally or on a regular basis?

I'll admit that I'm guilty of it. I mean, it's not like I have gotten to the point where I can't even pay my bills because of my spending habits, etc, but I have put things on credit cards when I probably shouldn't have (kinda like my last bag purchase, lol). I know that I should be saving money for school, but at the same time I figure that it's not going to matter because I'll have to take out a loan anyways.

I know how I really should be spending, but sometimes I can't help it If I love something, like a bag for example, and must have it...then I get it (given that it's under the max I could spend). Sometimes I just get sucked in. And yes, bags are my weakness...they make me really happy.

    So, can anyone else relate?

I use to spend WAY beyond my means... for example.. my parents gave me a credit card 2 years ago it had 5K but they never told me to spend 5K. Well I did.. I maxed it out.. real quick. I would go to the mall and buy whatever I wanted.. but I also got into trouble for it. They never made me take anything back.. but I was broke as a joke.. spending money that was kinda like imaginery money I guess you could say? I wasn't very smart.. but I was also clueless about the value of the not so great American Dollar.

I now make my own money.. and I def. don't spend beyong my means. I buy stuff... but I make sure there is always some money in the bank. I only make money for gigs I do.. or when I tutor. So if there is a dry spell and I'm doing nothing I gotta make sure I have money.. ya know? I think the way the economy is going.. I gotta make sure I have money. I'm not saying I save every penny I have.. I do buy what I want.. I bought 4 pairs of MK shoes last weekend.. but now I'm like ok.. I gotta make some more so I can buy something else.

Before I was really immature and I was clueless of the value of a dollar. Now that I make my own money.. I understand it all. And being in the entertainment industry it's TOUGH. I don't have a job where I get paid every single week.. I get paid for what I do. For instance if I were to sign a record deal.. they would give me $100K. Yes.. that sounds wonderful.. but thats $100K living in a posh neighborhood in CA or an apt in NY. They give you $100K to pay all your bills and eat for about a year, a year and a half. $100K can go VERY quickly esp. in NY. And then the best part.. if they put a million into your record. You have to pay back the million PLUS the 100K through sales of your record before you even see a CENT. Which after everything you are only getting about 50 cents per record sold. So unless you have endorsements.. you are pretty much living off of 100K for 2 years.

WOW... sorry for ranting.. I need to shut my mouth. Anyway.. so no.. I do not spend beyond my means.

I think most people can relate. I think it is okay to indulge yourself ... as long as you aren't putting yourself in financial danger. You are relatively young, so you have plenty of years to get your savings and everything together.

I don't spend beyond my means, but I think that is because I grew up with parents that did, and now I see them...my mom owned her own business that was very lucrative and she sold off all her assets after 9/11 (her market was the New England states -she made home decor items some of which were even in catalogs - I spent my childhood assembling painted pieces of wood with vintage fabric strips) My dad worked for GM as a skilled tradesman and made very good money. They should have no worries now-their house should be paid for, their cars paid for, and they should have a sizeable nest egg for which to rely on...but that is not the case. My mom is almost 60 and working for less than $10 at a candy store making fudge. Not that there is anything wrong with that - but if she would have prepared more for her future than enjoying the here and now she would be able to travel and do the things she wants to do.

That said, don't worry about the occasional purse put on the charge card or the seasonal indulgence of that which is in style and fabulous. Just...keep your head on your shoulders and make sure that you can pay your CC bill off in full at the end of the month - no longer than two months.

Spending beyond my means was what got me in trouble in the first place and its the main reason why I have no money right now and we don't have any savings. I almost lost my chance to go to school because I was literally about to be sued by my bank. I actually went there and begged them for mercy... and they loaned me the money to pay off my cards with the condition that I close them and that I pay off my previous loan from them right then and there (hence my husband lost his investment money). Now I am paying them every month and my husband no longer "owns" his truck. Yep... all of this because we wanted to have a nice wedding and both sets of parents didn't feel it was their responsibility to help us out. Oh, but we had bought other stuff before that too. It all just added up one day to the point where I couldn't pay the bills anymore.

Oh wow.. so sorry to hear all that. My story doesn't even compare to yours. I maxed out a credit card.. and I never took anything back. I do give my Mom money though every time I get paid. Trying to give back for what I caused.. ya know? I know with the economy taking a major plunge and no one wants to admit including our president that we are in a recession (and to think we might see a great depression if things get worse? I'm a republican but I'm not so sure McCain is the choice to make us better).. I know with all these things going on it's hard to see a light at the end of the tunnel.. but I hope things get better for you!

I'm still young, college student living at home and don't have many expenses. I've been working for a year now and I don't make the greatest money and right now I have been saving my money up for either a new bag or vacation money. I used to go and spend my paycheck as soon as I had it. Then I wanted to treat myself for proving I could make and save money and I bought my LV wallet. Then within a month I needed a new phone and spent nearly $400 on it. I've gotten better and only buy necessities now, I got rid of a lot of clothes and replenished my closet with necessities here and there. I always said to myself that I want to reward myself for working and buy a nice bag, which I really want a new marc jacobs and I'm determined to get it, yes its frivelous, but to me it means something and also proves that I can save the money I need. I don't have any credit cards yet, only my bank debit/credit card so that way if I buy something I know I need to have the money and then some more to have money necessities. My mom used to get annoyed when I'd blow my paycheck all the time, but now she said she's proud of me that I've learned to save and justify on things I need/want. She thinks its rediculous to spend heaps of money on just bags but she knows it makes me happy and feel a sense of worth. Right now is probably the only time I can get away with indulging on myself, I know in the next few years ill be more strapped and need to amass money for the future, but at 20 I figure I should finally indulge in the 1 bag I want and promised I would work for, then its all about saving for the future.

i am def. guilty of spending beyond my means! especially when it comes to charging it. .__.
i really feel that i can't help it sometimes, like "omg this is a really cute pair of shoes, i have to get it now!" thankfully, my debt has gone down and i'm wiser on my spending, (UMM. okay semi-lied, just a tiny really little bit wiser, lol). my debt is still there but hopefully i can get it paid off by the end of next month because i really do need to save up for a new car/college. idk, i think money is one of those life lessons. you learn how to deal about it... eventually.

Wow!! Sounds like regardless of age, we've all been there! I tell ya, I'm 39 years old, and I do occasionally buy things that I know I shouldn't. I don't use bill money, but if I didn't splurge that month, by all means, we could have had better food, or even went out to dinner at least once for that month!

This is a tricky subject because, My husband and I once had more than enough money. It's a long story, but he went to Iraq, and when he came back was unable to keep his current "plant manager" position. We went from making 2000.00 a week to making 500.00 a week. Boy did I have to cut WAYYY back and sell alot of my things.

The tricky part is......I then had money every month I could take a spend on a purse, etc. but never once did I have the desire to do so. I could easily afford a Louis bag back then, but didn't want it. Now that I know it's beyond my reach, I want it....and I want it bad!!

With this all being said.....now don't misjudge this....because I do NOT like fake bags.....butttt.......I think for this very reason......there are ladies out there who choose to buy replica. Because it's something that makes them rise above all those hopeless finances and sets them above all thier cares. Besides, if you feel like in life you work and work and work and can NEVER treat yourself, life is NO fun!

It took my husband and I a good while to be able to adjust to such a huge financial change, but I have a more humble exsistance now, but honestly noone really knows this because I'm still sporting my Louis mom got me a year or so ago, and although i'd love to get something new for a change, i'll keep using it.

    Sorry for the long post.....

^^^ I understand why women are tempted by fake handbags, I just think its naive of them to buy them thinking that a stupid logo is going to make them a better person. I would hope if any of them knew all the nasty stuff that is associated with fakes, that they would think twice about buying them.

I don't spend anything anymore. All of my money goes to bills.
I have a credit card with almost 9K on it, because I was stupid with my ex boyfriend... and I have a davids bridal card. Those along with my car payment and rent, utilities, gas, etc.... Its TOO much considering I am so young... But, hopefully by the time im out of school I will be able to spurge a little on bags... But, I've learned from my mistakes about trying to spend more than I actually have

No, i don't. Because i don't have the money to for one, i'm flat broke at the moment, and for another my mom has and is raising me to be frugal and to hold onto my money. I also watch the Suze Orman show, so i know what drowning in debt can do to you, your Credit Card score, etc. And i've seen what it does to people, my uncle and his live-in fiancee being a prime example, when they have a lot of money they go through it like a red-hot knife through butter, instead of saving it, and also paying the money back to people whom they owe it to, my mom, my grandparents and other people, argh! And then when they don't have money, they bitch and moan, i feel like saying HELLO! you got yourself into this, by spending it like water. They talk about wanting to buy a house, (we live in a duplex), but i don't see how. My aunt to be runs up a $150 tab every two weeks at her job (She works at a gas station), and they impulse buy, and oh i could go on, but i won't.

Well I agree with BoysRsmelly! It's true some people do think that it gives them a certain stature in life, this is silly! I think it's human nature to want what you can't have, but when you are financially stable enough to purchase a bag, you'd rather save the money than to buy one. I drool over bags daily, but I don't buy them! Heck, I can't even afford to fill my Tahoe up now. I haven't filled that sucker up in a long time. I put 45.00 a week in it....it gives me a half tank, and I make sure I don't go anywhere I don't have to. I think this is one reason why I like internet shopping. No impulse buying and no spending unneccessary gas, it's as precious as gold now!

Times are going to get worse. The economy is slowly declining and all our cute purses aren't going to mean a hill of beans to us then! Of course, until then.....i'm still drooling! LOL

Yes, I do as I'm a stay at home mum so everytime I spend, it's beyond my means! But seriously, when I was working and didn't have kids it was all about me. I would go shopping almost everyday at lunchtime. Now that I have two kids and not working temporarily, they come first and i rarely shop. I've cut up three of my credit cards and have only one for emergencies. If I do want to buy something for myself, I'll look for sales or if I want a new expensive bag I'll sell stuff that I don't use anymore to fund it. We have quite a bit of savings and assets but I hate to touch it as it's for our future and kids. It's still really hard though when there are so many beautiful purses out there to tempt you!
