I'm a full time college student, so no expenses since my parents agreed to help me get through school by not charging me for anything... (thank God). When it comes to something I really want, I save up for it... It really does suck buying something and having to pay it off long-term. I recently took out a MacBook with my credit on a BestBuy card... once I had it I hated the fact that I had to pay it off.... lol... I have a shitty summer job... It's just for the summer to keep me entertained since I want a little break off of school... But overall, It's not too bad... its an experience.

To answer the question, I get my paychecks and save them up for something I really want or need...

Yeah...if I want something I have to save up. Sometimes if I don't have money and I want something really bad, I'll ask my bf if I can borrow some and I just pay him back.

I don't want a credit card right now...I know it'd get me in trouble lol.

Credit cards can get you into trouble really fast! I'm glad you two are trying to avoid them! Wish I had parents that would have supported me through school. Nope, I got dumped into the real world at 17. I'm not saying that I didn't have any choice when it came to credit... but it was basically how I survived.

    It depends.
Really, if I were doing the part-time job I have now full time as a "career", I'd be living beyond my means.
But I don't really have any expenses, and I [thankfully] don't have a credit card, so...
anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.

yea that's right, Arrianne12, I'm in the same situation, when you've got kids you tend to feel guilty about spending for little indulgences, and your kids come first. We're in a financial slag at the moment as well... and it's good to know that I'm not alone. lol.

i don't really spend beyond my means, I try to make the best out of what i have, unlike when i was single i'm just whatever, that's why i didn't have savings when i got married...

same here, when i am still back in the philippines, i used to be a model, and every time i earn something, i spend it like it's nobody's business. i got married w/ out any savings, and thankfully, i have a hubby who's very good w/ finances and he's teaching me how to save for my future. he even gave me php40k (huge amount in the phils, back in '05, now it's just meh!!) i spent it all and i don't know where the money went. so now, i'm being punished and he says it'll take time for him to trust me again w/ money. as of now, i only have my debit and been saving like crazy!! good thing i still don't have a CC or else.....

Before you go cancelling your credit cards once they are paid off, be sure that you understand that doing so may not HELP your FICO score, it may hurt it. It all depends on how much you make, how much outstanding debt you have, etc. I'd read up and find out the consequence before just calling the company and cancelling the card (you can just cut it up and forget about it).

I have run up at my worst a CC debt of $5,000. It's been down to $2,000 for about a year now, and it's so hard to get down past that!! Haha, things keep coming up!! I'm trying though and I'm better at it than I was. I get things on sale only now. I also came to the realization that a cotton dress that costs $400 isn't any better quality than one that costs $30. I started realizing I was being played for a fool in some cases!! I also work in the fashion industry and am VERY well aware of the cost to make most garments. So I felt that ME of all people should have realized this (although, I still indulge in luxury items that I think have value years beyond my use).

It's difficult but it's very empowering when you can pay off debts. I love paying down my credit card bill - it makes me happy!!

BTW I'm a republican too and I agree, I don't know how much help McCain is going to bring to our situation but I am positive that we'll see some MAJOR tax increases if Obama gets in. I can't afford to give up anymore of my tax money - I looked at my paycheck and over $3,000 already went to federal taxes!! That's just FEDERAL...add another $2,000 for state, medicare (which I don't get any benefit from), social security (which we all know isn't ever going to come back to us when we retire), etc...

    Susieq -

you should talk to a CPA or RA (Registered Agent - they aren't usually CPAs, but have passed a test from the IRS) and do some tax planning. You would be amazed at the small things you could do to save some of your tax money.

I don't think I ever spend too much when I know I shouldn't, the last thing I got was a new camera but my old one was broken and I'd had it for three years. I've had a credit card for over a year now and I've paid off the balance entirely every month. Discover is probably kicking themselves thinking it being my first card that I wouldn't know how to use it and rake up a debt lol, jokes on them.

I dont spend beyond my means, my hubby pays for everything. We always agree to our large purchases. We have like 2 credit cards that we dont use cuz we almost always pay cash. its better that way we have had the experience of charging everything and paying for it later and then realizing we spent beyond our means. So we have paid down most of them and kept only two. Now we're on track and are relieved lol. We too save for things we want. And have all the basic bills, car, rent, utilities etc. So we dont spend more than we have anymore lol
