    Default Career Poll

What would you guys do if you were in a position where a key person in the company that you work for quit, and you carry the credentials necessary to complete the job and you are the one most likely to be asked to do the job?

    Pros:

Double the pay (yes, double...sending annual earnings into the six figures)
    Stellar resume
More flexibility (home office is a possibility)

    Cons:

Constant travel. Will be away from the family at least two full weeks per month
Can't go back to school - too much travel involved

So...what's more important? Earning a good living or just being with the family? I mean...everyone would benefit and I would be able to retire a lot earlier...

It would depend on how many kids I had, also probably how old they were and how much my spouse was working.

I imagine in your heart, you probably may already know the answer. Go with your gut, I says.

If I got a job that paid that well and I was at least OK with it, I would scrap school. just my opinion though.

I can see how it would be difficult to leave you family for 2 weeks out of the month. The traveling part would be ok for me since i'm single. But I guess it just depends on how you feel about that and how your family feels.

Couldn't you take the job and then quit if it really interfered with your family or other priorities in your life?

I have no biological children... One stepkid that is 16

If I got the job, it would really solve some of the issues we have right now, and if I could do it for just two years it would be great

My husband is skeptical of me being on the road a lot... I would have to go to china, Taiwan, Korea, el Salvador, Venezuela, panama and throughout the continental us... But at the same time I am the main breadwinner in the home so ... He'd be able to adjust to my schedule...

What if they dont even consider me? Now that I kind of think that I want this... LOL

**sigh** think of the lovely bags I could buy...

I say go for it, if you only wanna do it for two years or so.
My brother has a job right now where hes gone for a month, then home two weeks, and so on... Its hard for him to not see his girlfriend, but the six figure income is nice, and he's not going to do it forever.
Good Luck in whatever you choose!

ok, since you don't have any children of your own, maybe that changes things a bit. how close are you with your stepkid, if you don't mind me asking?

Not a prob. Biological mom is bi polar (maybe not really, but she acts like it) and she dropped the kid off at our house one day and was like "bye" and didn't try to contact the kid for like almost a year. We are pretty close in age...we are only about 8-9 years apart (I have cousins his age), so I am closer in age to my stepkid than I am my own brother (he's 10 years older than me) and my husband (15 years older) ... we get along but it's not like we are inseparable or anything. I don't think it would upset the kid at all...pretty resiliant with all the drama that happened because of the mom. I came along when he was about 12, so it's not like I raised him or he considers me his mother.

I don't know how my husband would like it ... but we could really use the money I would earn to set ourselves up where I wouldnt have to work as much after a couple of years. idk. I shouldn't even obsess about it though because they havent even approached me yet!

My girlfriend was in the same situation about 7 years ago. She took the job, made more time for the family with the home office (that she was able to work from 2 days a week) and then takes her husband with her on trips. She will schedule them to extend over a long weekend or go earlier. They have been to some killer places this way.

The only thing is the 16 year old. During the school year, we both can't just leave unless my mom came down or something...we don't have anyone to help. I guess I could try to go in the summers or something...

I dont know. I would do it for no less than $130,000 per year.

I don't know if I would like traveling that much in general. I don't like sleeping in strange, uncomfortable beds. Plus I'd miss my sweetie.

I know but could you imagine this scenario:

You could pay off both you and your spouses debt in its entirety in two years. That's what it boils down to...in an economy that sucks this bad, is it stupid to bypass such a good opportunity?

I have a call in to the person who is leaving to see what they have to say about the position.

^^^ I say just do what you think you have to do. I just think there are more important things in life than money. Paying off you debts would be great, don't get me wrong. But I would make sure that you're going to be happy with the job and all the things that come with it first.

Yes, there are a lot more things important than money. Why I am torn is the debt that I can pay off now will make it so that we can earn the income we need so that neither of us really have to work a "real" job...I mean, I would just have to have health insurance. That's the only thing...sooo...I could technically work at Wal Mart and we could live very well...

The only reason I wanted to go back to school is so that I would be able to teach at the community college level at night to earn more money. I wouldn't need that if I got this job.

I don't know...it all depends in the offer and everything.

Well, you are obviously having your doubts. Otherwise, you would not have been asking us for advice about this. Just do what your gut tells you to do. Everything will work out right in the end, trust me.
