Default Tomorrow I'm asking for a raise

I know the economy is in the shitter, but hear me out on this.

Many of you have probably heard my ranting about my job but here goes again...

In September of 2007 I accepted a position as an Assistant Product Manager. I took the job knowing it was only a $2,500 increase a year on my salary but it was also a very similar position as my last - no additional responsibilities. I also knew that the $2,500 was what I would be spending extra on gas (it's a 50 mile a day drive compared to my 7 mile a day drive at my last job).

A week into the position, I am told that my Product Manager has quit. My boss (co-owner of the company) assured me that he would find help and also we would review my current position after 3 months and he would make sure to compensate me appropriately. Okay great - that sounded fine and even exciting!

3 months passed by and I had to set up the meeting - I figured he might have just forgot. It was in January that we had that meeting - he told me then that he didn't remember saying that at all. He said that if it was a matter of my position title, he would order me business cards with "Product Manager" since I was no longer "assisting" anyone. He then told me he was still looking to hire me some help. Then he said "where you going to ask for a raise?" and I felt almost guilty and said that it was up to him...he then said "well we don't do raises until the review time which is after 6 months". So I got up, left the office and felt like an idiot. Great...I got business cards and I'm still running a division COMPLETELY on my own. GOODBYE SOCIAL LIFE.

Well now it's over 7 months and he hasn't mentioned a word to me about a salary review. Oh and still - I am doing this 100% on my own, still no help hired. I'm fed-up, I feel used. I have been speaking to former colleagues/mentors as well as doing online research for the median income of someone who does my job (and they at least have a team with various resources) and it's easily $12,000 MORE than I make right now. Not to mention - I have TERRIBLE healthcare from this place and that's it. No dental, no 401k, no stock options (they aren't public), nada!!

While I am doing this on my own and stressing and doing more work than I ever would have agreed to initially at this salary - I've been trying to keep a good attitude but it's getting sour. I have been getting head hunters calling me DAILY offering jobs that are over DOUBLE what I make right now and less work!!!

Oh and - they are interviewing people to find me a manager/boss. Great...but they are getting people in here who are flying across the country and I just sit at my desk thinking "what in the world are they offering as a salary for these people wanting to move across the country and work here?". I am doing everything these people are interviewing to do - and I bet they are being offered a HELL of a lot more money.

Finally - this was what really burned the hell out of me. I mentioned that we just spent $50,000 on freelance designers (which I had to manager and basically babysit through the whole time - PLUS I had to take on 4 designs of my own). After reviewing the amount of work that valued up to $50,000, I felt it would have been much smarter to have a full-time in-house designer for $50,000. My boss said "There is no way in hell we would be able to get someone in here for $50,000 a year"...

    I make $37,500...

He made me feel like an asshole for sitting in that chair that day.

So can you guys give me tips or at least motivation to get the balls to do this tomorrow?

I think you def. deserve a raise! Im not sure how to motivate you, but i will try. lol.
Just, be confident. Don't let your boss have control over the situation and don't let him make you feel like an ass.... Thats pretty much all I got. Lol. sorry, im not good at all of this. Good Luck though!!!

    Susie,
You deserve more. Period. You are worth more. You need to go in there with that in the front of your mind. You deserve a raise.

    Well...there goes that.

I just finished the "meeting" and basically he took 2 seconds to think and said "we are reviewing our budget next week, nothing can be done until after that if we do anything". Then he proceeds to tell me how they are STILL looking to hire me help and that the one guy they are interested in wants $40,000 MORE than what he originally said he would accept and how they would look into it and still see him as a candidate.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! They are willing to spend $40,000 extra and still can't pay me AT LEAST that?

I am literally sitting here and crying because I'm fed up. I hate this - I feel like shit. I feel worthless. Not to mention - I have not once been told that I'm doing a great job. And I know I am!!!

Instead - he picks apart all the little things that I haven't done - and I assure you they would have been done if the day consisted of 25000 hours!! He loves to micro-manage me too...and everytime he does my timeline is extended by 2 months because he's too slow to do anything!!! But no...it all then comes back to me and it becomes my fault again for being late.

I hate this. I want to go home. I'm so fucked here.

My husband was in a situation earlier this month. He had been IT for an international comm. company for 4 years and instead of giving him the IT manager spot, they hired someone "older" to control him. Then, the "older" new IT manager stole a bunch of company shit and got caught in the middle of a sex triangle with one of the finance ladies and her supervisor boyfriend. So, this "older" idiot got fired and they made my dh "acting" IT manager. I forgot to mention that this company seats hundreds of pc's, servers, and has tons of networking issues. Well, my dh only had 1 IT guy under him, which is messed up all on its own because their sister companies in Monterrey, MX and in France have 40 IT and networking guys each!!!! Anyway, they keep delaying not only his much deserved raise (since he's doing the work of an IT manager and it severely understaffed), but they still haven't even hired more help. My dh would even do the interviews and gather a potential's resume, but they would just say, "Yea, we'll hire someone soon". This company was getting away with too much, so I told him to quit. He had been wanting to for a long time so when he saw that I was more than ok with it, he went in and quit!!!
He sleeps better now and got hired at a job that pays 4X more :)

Susie, I hope they give you the raise you deserve. I know that it feels like shit when you have people working WAY less and making more $$ than you, then start barking at you because certain impossible things didn't get done in 1 day. But, the only one that can change that situation is you, hottie. I really hope everything works out

aw thanks a lot chicken - it was good for me to read about your man's situation. ya know...a job is just a job and when it starts effecting your life negatively, I don't think it's worth it. well i have an interview tomorrow lined up for another company and i also just send out my resume to another potential company.

i guess now my fear is - if i leave this company - i have to move out to another state and i don't think my boyfriend will move with me. but i guess it's more important to do what's best for me.

Time to head to a headhunter. Start interviewing elsewhere. Once you have another job lined up, you can either go to this boss and lay it on the line with your demands, or just give your two week notice and move on.
Never stay in anything that makes you bitter and angry. That is so unhealthy.

Sending prayers your way that things work out as they should, giving you the positive outcome you deserve.

    Thanks so much Maevey...

I am at the point where ya know, why add anything above and beyond what I agreed to do right? So instead of stretching myself out for them - I'll do what they are doing to me. I'm here for work - and that's that. I'll do what I have to do but I will tell you, there's no more late nights here because I no longer consider this place as a long term investment for me and therefore - I'll save all my gems for another company. Ya know? Like I can go and give them an AMAZING quality control report for production that I have under my belt right now, but why should I? I've done enough of that and I haven't seen a positive thing come out of it - therefore I feel used.

I have an interview at 10am today and I sent my resume out to Anthropologie yesterday. I could live in Philly...still close enough to home.

Have you thought of hitting up a temp agency to see what they have? A lot of times, big companies use the temp services to hire employees and after they have worked there a while then hire them on full time. If you aren't a match for the company you are initially placed at - no worries! you won't lose your job, you will jsut be reassigned.

In the spirit of all this, here is an article from MSN on job searches.

MSN Careers - Seven Job Search Traps - Career Advice Article

Also, you might want to try Monster.com as well - I found my favorite two jobs there, including my current job. Register on there and you can make it so that employers and head hunters can find you as well...I never did that because I always did my job searches in secret

So sorry to hear about your Job situation, something similar happened to me when I was working for an International bank branch, actually 3 times they hired someone to head me and all 3 times I ended up training these people and each one left after 3-6 months as the job was very demanding, the 4th time when the Department Head called me introduce the new person I went in with my resignation. I loved the job but could not take it anymore!
I agree with everyone else, start looking for something, they dont deserve you!
