    Default Saying something unappropriate ....

An incident happenned at work. The manager was trying to get a staff member to move things around department. He said if you don't do this " I will have to kill you ". It was reported to the owner. The manager had a long chat with owner. He apologized over the phone to staff member. Was this enough punishment for this incident?

He said he was just joking.....The last time someone said that to me. I had store security and Toronto police involved. The manager is socially awkward.

Sometimes in the heat of the moment or while not being cautious, people do end up saying inappropriate things...but not meaning it. I think apologizing and giving a warning was reasonable. If the remark arose from anger, some anger management classes would help.
I don't beleive you have a hang a person for saying something like that...If someone makes a mistake, will kicking them out of their job or taking even serious action solve the issue?...it won't. It will just make a very bitter person and likely vengeful person out of someone.

If the inappropriate behavior is physical or sexual, there is no doubt that serious action should be taken. But for blurting out something that is from a lack of social skills, i think a reprimand is adequate.

I work in an entirely male dominated field (construction and architecture)..women are very few, and i have had several times people tell me in jest, i may have to kill you because that is going to cost em more to do in the project!...i just smile and tell them, take a ticket and stand in line I don't make an issue out of it. But at the same time, i demand and get respect...i would accept no less.
