Default How do all feel about unpaid internships?

I am thinking about taking an unpaid internship position with a non-profit organization. My husband said it was okay as long as it didn't interfere with anything else (work, school, etc). My hope is that this will provide me with some valuable experience. I guess I am just worried that it won't help me as much as I am hoping it will. How does everyone else feel about the idea of unpaid internships? I have never done anything before that didn't involve me being paid or getting credit for school.

I think unpaid internships are fine, AS LONG AS the experience you are going to get from it is invaluable to your resume and help in finding another job at a later date.

If you already work and go to school full time AND manage your home, you might want to consider if you are over-extending yourself. You don't want to commit yourself to the internship and then have to withdraw later(that will give a very bad impression) because you simply don't have the time or are unable to physically keep up.

I'm not full-time at school this semester. I was before, but this is my last semester and I really only needed one class to graduate. I'm taking 2 classes though because I wanted to take this other class. Hehehe...
I work about 20 hours a week and, yeah, I take care of the house the best I can. Mr BRS doesn't have a job though, so I think he should be doing more around here anyway.

I agree with Fed UP. don't over extend yourself, it does make a bad impression.

I've sponsored internships through design schools. I'm a startup company so I'm not able to offer paid internships but students do get college credit. I try to make sure it's a good fit for me and the student, that we both get something out of the experience. The sponsored internships worked out nicely. I've also tried internships that were not paid or for credit. These didn't work out so well. With a unpaid, non credit internship the only thing in it for you is a a referal at some time in the future, maybe. That's not enough to keep most people motivated. I don't take on interns unless there is something in it for them.

I say if you could handle an unpaid internship without it getting in the way of your priorities, I say go for it. If its going to look good on your resume, why not. Good luck and keep us updated!

I agree with the girls. The experience you'll gain is probably worth more than what you would get paid. Especially if it's something you're going to love to do and will be valuable to your future. If you're unsure about it, I would see what your friends advice is, and then if you're still not 100%, but gut would say hold off until maybe next time.

Although, you may just have to go with it. I think once you start doing it you'll feel that it was the right decision.

Agreed. It has to benefit you long term. Unless you are just curious about whether or not the field is you. Don't take it unless you are going to be passionate about it. There has to be something about it that will motivate you!

Wow, you guys are some real downers.
Anyway, I am going to give the internship a shot. A lot of the stuff I'll be doing will overlap with my student group's activities so it won't be adding as much extra work as I thought.

I've done many unpaid internships and I would do them all over again if I had to. For someone who didn't have any work experience during high school, it was a great for me to build up my resume, get references, and of course LEARN, LEARN, LEARN. Esp. if you're interning in a field that you want to work in, it's a great experience. A lot of times, companies hire there interns after it's completed.

Good luck and keep up posted!
