    Default I got laid off...

    Hey ladies... and GUY.

It's been a while since I've been on here... I just needed to come here today because I don't know what to do with myself anymore.

So here's the scoop... I started a new job at the end of October. I LOVED it there. Wait, did I already post about this? I don't know. Anyway. I was there for less than 2 weeks when the company unexpectedly laid off about 40% of its employees. I was included since I was new. So... I'm jobless and feel really low. I was actually okay for the first couple weeks, and I've had a couple interviews here and there, but this week has been particularly bad. I don't know if it's because I just happen to be PMSing right now, but I'm really feeling discouraged, rejected, and hopeless. Not to mention broke, because I haven't received the severance that I got yet, and even though I'm claiming unemployment, THAT hasn't gotten paid either because it's taking the agency 6 weeks just to make a "decision".

On top of that, I left my last job because there were some shady things going on, but the employment agency that placed me there won't work with me because my employer basically lied about me to them so they could get their fee back. They'll only work with me again in the future if I can get a recommendation from my most recent employer, which at the moment is the one they happened to place me with. So I'm SOL on any jobs that this particular recruiter might have exclusive rights to. I sent an email to my former boss asking if I could get a recommendation, because they were still planning on having me help out because they liked my work, until I got another job. I haven't heard back and I don't know if they are just busy or I'm being purposely ignored.

Furthermore, a reference that I had used in the past seems to be doing the same thing - either really busy, or ignoring me - so I basically feel like I am totally screwed. I have one solid direct-report reference and a couple indirect references but I am feeling SO CRAPPY right now.

Oh, I was going to add... is it too much just to ask for them to respond and say "I'm sorry, I don't think I can provide a reference"?

Sorry for the rambling. I just need some support.

I'm so sorry this happened to you! I know it sounds stupid, but hang in there. What are your other options? Can you get freelance work? If companies are laying off full time staff, they may be more open to freelancers (sorry, I'm not sure what industry you're in). Or even part time work for the time being while you're looking for a more permanent position.

As for the references, rather than getting written reference, can you just include their names and phone numbers as references so the potential employer can call them directly to ask about you? I found that my employers preferred to call previous bosses directly rather than read a written reference.

I hope things look up soon. Good luck!

That's horrible! But I was also wondering what industry you were in, like maybe you can have a portfolio along with your other references. When one door shuts, another opens. You're going to be okay, just keep your head up.

I am sorry about all this. They might be a little busy right now with all the new changes and stuff, it wouldn't hurt if you call again to remind them about the recommendation letter. Is there anyone else what can give you a recommendation letter? someone you know with a little business, a teacher or something like that.

Don't worry, hang in there. It's going to be tough but you are very responsible and a good worker and hopefully you will get another opportunity to show them how good you are. Everything is going to work itself out.

Remember, "When God closes a door, somewhere he opens a window."

thanks everyone... i'm feeling a little bit better. it's a total emotional rollercoaster.

one tiny update (sort of)... i'm an idiot, i had a typo in the email address i used for my former employer. for some reason it only bounced back like more than 24 hours after i wrote it. ugh.

anyway... i'm actually not seeking written letters, but merely asking them the courtesy of whether they are comfortable giving me a recommendation via the phone... a heads-up, if you will. i don't want to ask someone for a reference if they haven't given me their permission.

so i have to keep waiting... and being patient.

'tis true... when one door closes, another opens... or a window opens. i just have to hold strong in my faith.

i'm an accountant. it used to be relatively easy to get a new job. i'd get at least 3 solid leads a week with my background. now it's not so easy. i just want someone to give me a chance...

to complicate things further, the job before this last one (i've been hopping around too much and want to find something and settle down) i left on bad terms with my manager. well, i tried to be cordial but he was a total d*ck. so i can't ask him for a recommendation. i do have a recommendation from that company but it's not my direct manager.

I have a recruiter that's been bugging the s*** out of me for the last year for a job in Phoenix or Las Vegas (it's a public accounting audit position) I could give you her name and number... I live in Tennessee and the cost of living here is 20% lower than Las Vegas and the pay isn't there for me. If you aren't already a CPA I would sit the exam and that will give you a big advantage over your competition. If you don't qualify for the exam due to lack of college hours, I would look in to the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) as any certification is better than none. I know the expense of sitting an exam is high - figure around $2,000 for the CPA if you don't pass it on the first try...or around $1,000 for the CMA - but it will pay off in the long run.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks Diva, actually I spent 3 years in public and then was in industry for 1 1/2 - 2 yrs... I do have my CPA.

I'm not really in a position to relocate otherwise I'd totally take you up on your offer.

I live in Seattle so I have to deal with the WaMu flood too.

Hi chick! Sorry to hear about your job. Welcome to the jungle. It's a tough place right now. All you can do is your best to find another job--you can't do better than that. It might take a while because timing sucks, but one way or another, sooner or later, you will be fine. My advice is to approach the situation as objectively as possible so that your emotions don't work against you. Good luck!
