    Default Feeling the recession yet??

Well....I AM!! Some of you may already know that I own a little carpet cleaning company here in sunny California. Business has been horrible this year and lately it seems as though I can barely find enough work for all of my employees. Some days I dont even have any work for them.

Ive been trying to keep everybody working. But, I think sooner or later I might haveta lay off at least 2 people (which Im REALLY dreading to do)to keep this company afloat.

Unfortunately, I dont see this recession ending anytime soon. I just hope it doesnt get any worst.

    BTW, Welcome To Guy's Rant!!

It will get worse before it gets better. Make sure to take care of your needs ... Sucks to be in that position. Everything should start getting better in a couple of days.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can keep everything together and get through this with your business intact.

I'm feeling the recession, too. My hubby is a manager at a retail store that is going out of business. He will be out of a job Dec. 23. It sucks, but I know we will make it through this.

December 23? As in 2 days before Christmas? That's just cruel. You think they'd just stay open until Jan 31...

Well at least gas is under $1.50 a gallon! I don't know if I'm really feeling it yet. I was poor to begin with, so maybe it will take a little longer. People sure haven't slowed down their shopping around here though. We did record numbers on Black Friday where I work.

Yeah, I really don't know their logic behind closing so early. It doesn't make any sense, and you're right, it is cruel. They are putting a ton of people out of work right before Christmas. But a liquidation company is in control now and that is when they want out. The only good thing about this is that if they can get everything out of the building by the 23, all of the management that stayed will get a small bonus. It's not much, but it will definitely help.

My DH works in HR for a major office supply chain and we are feeling it. Every day he comes home to tell me that someone or some department got let go. I think it sucks that they get let go before the holidays. I hope that it gets better soon.

Done...I think...Until I find something that catches my eye

It's always hard being the boss and having to let people go. How much do you advertise?
We always have less business in the winter months but this is because most of our businesses are geared more towards summer months. Can you add on something else to the mix to keep the company going year round? You can send out a post card giving a discount for the holidays. Example: we have a maintenance program for our HVAC company that gets us into the homes twice a year minimum. It keeps our customers having their life time warrenty on services, but it also allows us to promote and let our customers know about the other services we offer. So not only are we advertising through the yellow pages and word of mouth, but then out techs leave a folder at each resident with all of the services.
Maybe you could add a cleaning service (I have someone you could hire to manage it - she lives in Van Nuys) or tree trimming service.

Have you thought about contacting the banks there in the foreclosure department? People tear up the houses a lot of times when they get evicted. Maybe you could clean them up and everything for a flat fee. Clean = clean plus clean carpets. I know a guy in AR that does this for HUD and VA repos, and he makes an extra $500-$600 per month - but that's with limited foreclosures. You could also keep up the lawns if necessary for a fee. Be cheap enough though to make yourself competitive. Maybe this would keep your guys busier and keep you from letting someone go.

Yes...I could feel the recession. For example, last week I went to the malll with my mom and dad and there was no one at the mall. Last year, at this time you couldn't find a parking space and the mall was really crowded. It's so sad.

The dentist that did my implant said he has seen a drop in patients coming in for cosmetic implants. It used to be teh majority of his patients were cosmetic. Now, he said he's seeing a shift more to patients like me that come in because something is broken and has to be fixed. It's expensive! Even with insurance I still dropped $1,400 on ONE TOOTH!!! And that's just the surgery part. I will still pay my regular dentist for a crown later on.

Other than that, where I work it's not hitting us as bad. Not yet. Fingers crossed because I am the sole provider for the fam!

Same here Maevey. Winter is usually slow for me too. But, I didnt exspect it to be this SlooOw!! The types of marketing I do is with Reminder cards, discounts cards, flyers, and even giveaway free spotters. I dont do yellow pages anymore because the return on those wasnt worth it for me.

I have this maid service compnay that I sub out work to once in awhile. But, nothing big to brag about. I dont know anything about the other side of the cleaning industry so I tend to shy away from it. Plus at the moment I dont think I have enough funds to start up another department and hire more people than I already have. Especially the way the economy is now.
