    Default Financial Aid Help

I'm really upset right now! I seriously don't think I can take much more of this! If it's not one bad thing, its another.
Remember I was in that car accident? Well I was in the middle of an internship when it happened and I lost a good chunk of time going to it. I was super stressed out because I had no clue how I was going to finish before the end of the semester. So I talked to my adviser about dropping one of the the credit hours (I had a total of 3 for the internship). If I dropped one of them, then I would only have to complete 60 hours at my internship instead of 90. I was worried about my financial aid, so she talked to someone in the financial aid office for me. They told her that nothing would be affected since I was taking more than enough credit hours next semester and it would "even out" (the combined credit hours from the two semesters would be over 24 hours). Well, I got an e-mail today from the head of the financial aid department. I have been summoned to his office because my dropping of this one credit hour is going to put me at 11 credit hours for this semester and he says it is going to affect my financial aid. I'm terrified now! Are they going to refuse my financial aid next semester? Or make me pay back my grants and scholarships this semester?

Oh no! I am so sorry bRs! I really don't think they can refuse you financial aid next semester or make you pay back any grants or scholarships for dropping ONE credit hour. Is there any way you could go in and talk with the head of the department and explain your situation? I wouldn't be that worried about it since you did have a very good reason for having to drop the credit. Good luck!

I suppose they can if that ONE credit hour puts me below what is considered full-time, which is does.
I e-mailed my adviser. She wants me to meet with her instead of the financial aid guy.

Well that's good that you are going to meet with her. I am sure they can work something out for you because of what happened with your car and everything.

Thanks girls! I feel bad for always complaining about my problems on here. I hope nobody thinks I'm a complainy-butt. I just don't have anyone else to talk to really. Mr BRS just yells at me "Well you better get this figured out!".

First, I would like to point out that "Complainy" is not really a word. You cant just go around trying to start new word trend. It just doesnt work that way...

Thanks gals and guy! I have been WAY too stressed lately. It just seems like one thing goes wrong right after another. I swear there is a force working against me when it comes to trying to finish school.

Anyways, I'm going to go talk to them here pretty soon. I'll let you know what happens.

I was always under the impression that you could have financial aid as long as you were at least a half-time student. Full time is 12 credit hours for undergrad and 9 hours for graduate. They CAN make you pay back any federal grant money that you did not "earn" ... but I wouldn't freak out about it yet. Maybe you need to take a bulls*** class next semester like underwater basketweaving 101 - something to give you an easy A and keep your status clean. Check out to see if there are online courses offered by your school (most have certain classes you can do online - I did my government class online and it was hella easy) so that you don't have to worry about scheduling conflicts. I am sure they will get this all worked out for you. You can read up about financial aid on fafsa.gov or salliemae.com
