I still dont know why it retails for so much. Oh wait, because it's "Limited Edition" Goodness. Even if I was a millionaire I wouldn't get this bag. But if I saw someone on the street with it I would have to complement them for being lucky enough to get their hands on this bag.

Only 5 in the US?? I wonder where they are!

Is there a point, do you think, where you may not want to be seen with an expensive bag because it makes you look kinda shallow?

"The Tribute Patchwork bag is not the most expensive ever created. In 2005, auction house Doyle New York sold a black crocodile Hermes Birkin customized with a clasp and lock featuring 14 carats of pave diamonds set in white gold for $64,800.

Not to be outdone, Chanel will launch a bag in December made of white alligator skin and diamonds. The iconic double-C clasp will be studded with 334 of the jewels, or about 3.56 carats. The chain strap will be made of white gold trimmed with more alligator skin. Only 13 will be available worldwide.

    Price: $260,150. "
(- but it was soooo cuuute and perrrty, my enormous ego just had to have it.... )

Shallow to whom? I don't think most people even recognize designer bags. I didn't myself, up until just a few years ago. The ones that do recognize them probably own them and would want it themselves. Purse snobs can talk all they want about how they're buying "quality," but they're also buying perceived status, otherwise everyone would be posting photos of quality, no-name bags.

About the Tribute bag, I like it. But I like patchwork, hippy stuff.

I wasn't actually talking about the Tribute bag but the upcoming Chanel, which probably should have been in the Chanel section but the article was about the Tribute. I personally like the Tribute as a concept design, kind of like concept cars, not meant for large scale production nor wearabililty, just stretching the limits of bag design - and the wallet.

The idea of adding diamonds just to achieve notoriety seemed pointless extravagance and a designer cop-out, a similar effect could probably be achieved with Swarovski crystals minus the tag price aura. That said, and not having seen the White Alligator masterpiece, I do admit the envy factor here. I'll probably be aahing and oohing with the rest of the crowd when it comes out. Wouldn't want to own it though (like it's ever going to happen), just handle it to see what it's all about would be enough for me.

As for being a quality snob, touche , can't help it - I'm a sucker for fine craftsmanship, my most prized bag - a vintage no-name alligator that I take out every now and then just to look at before putting it back in the depths of my closet.

This frankenbag makes me gag - no hat was not supposed to rhyme
But ewww - it's like all thebags fell off your shelf - then a bottle of glue fell on them = then you picked it up and said 'Look - a bag!'
Definitly a status symbol because you special enough to be one on 5 to get this bag. But personally I think someone should be ashamed to carry a bag that could buy a home for someone in need.

i have seen the chanel (pics not RL) its really ugly and nouveu riche IMO, its totally not the aesthetic of chanel to me. The alligator looks like leather to me and it used in excess on the handle straps, the chanel logo is the feature of the bag, tacky IMO. the diamonds just make it way OTT blingy and trashy it acctually reminds me of those horrid guess bags.

Well, clearly this bag's target market is the very rich, and where such people gather they probably sit and squint at each other's bags, trying to see if they're diamonds or Swarovskis, lol.

About its price buying a small home. I don't see it as significantly more indulgent than a ridiculously oversized house or flashy car. It's all discretionary spending. I'd probably bling out with this stuff if I could, too, lol. Oh well.
