Default 1923 Louis Vuitton trunk on Pawn Stars

I recently discovered the show Pawn Stars - have you ladies heard of it? I was just catching up on some of the old episodes when someone brought something interesting into the shop - A 1923 Louis Vuitton Trunk! The episode was "Pawn Shop Pinot". It kinda annoys me when people bring stuff into there and no idea what the worth is, it's like they don't do their own research. Obviously Pawn Stars can't authenticate everything.

What happened was this guy went in there to see how much he could get for his Trunk. The story is that he was cleaning out an estate and the owners were just throwing it away. It was in perfect condition too. It had a silk interior that had absolutely no flaws. He was asking about $15k for it and the Pawn Star guy was like no way, I don't see it going for anymore than $4k and that he would give him $2,500.. I was yelling at the television at this point "Don't do it!" lol.

He ended up walking out, with his trunk..

I've never heard of that show, glad to hear that he walked out. I would have done the same! $2,500 for an authentic Louis Vuitton trunk in absolute perfect condition would be insane!

What's that auction show? There was a large LV trunk on there that sold for like $6300 (if I remember right).

Really? That's a really good price for a vintage Large Louis Vuitton trunk

I googled the "Pawn Shop Pinot" episode that you were talking about and only found the transcript. I wanted to see a picture of the Trunk!

00:03:15 - This is my 1923 vintage louis vuitton trunk.
    00:03:19 - Yeah, this is a classic.
00:03:20 - YOU GOTTA LOVE THE GOLD L.V.s ALL OVER It.
00:03:22 " [both laugh] - I'm coming into the pawn shop today to try and sell my vintage louis vuitton trunk.
00:03:32 I came into this trunk with a friend of mine.
00:03:34 We were doing an estate cleaning.
00:03:36 I found it in the basement of a housethat we were cleaning out.
00:03:38 It was in the garbage as far as they were concerned.
    00:03:41 And I rescued it. - yeah, that's amazing.
00:03:42 , have you done any research on it or anything like that?
    00:03:45 - I have. I contacted louis vuitton.
00:03:47 The year of the trunk is from 1923.
00:03:50 It was soldto an affluent family in pittsburgh, pennsylvania.
00:03:54 And it was stenciled for them.
00:03:55 - Yeah, 'cause someone of meansbought this thing.
00:03:58 Today everyone knows louis vuitton for their handbags.
00:04:01 But back in the day, they weren't known for handbags.
00:04:04 They were known for luggage.
00:04:05 So what do you know about the stickers?
00:04:06 - Well, I know this one here-- it says the cunard line.
00:04:09 And that was the company that owned thelusitania.
00:04:11 - Yeah, cunard was-- you know, built luxury ships.
00:04:14 , white star was another great line.
    00:04:16 they had beautiful ships.
00:04:18 You know, they had thetitanic.
00:04:21 The fact that at one time, this trunk was on a cunard and a white star ship, it makes you wonder all the places it's been.
00:04:26 Back in the day, you didn't go on vacation.
00:04:27 You went on tour, okay, and then you were a tourist.
00:04:31 ,, it was five days by sea, maybe five or six days in england, take a ferry over to france.
00:04:36 And that's why, if you see the movietitanic, this was thesmallbag the rich brought on there.
00:04:40 Louis vuitton actually made giant portable closets.
00:04:44 They could be this big, that tall, literally.
00:04:46 When you went on vacation back then, it was a one-month, two-month, three-month adventure.
    00:04:51 It wasn't a weekend in paris.
00:04:53 It was a month in paris.
00:04:55 And it's good old louis vuitton quality.
00:04:57 This thing is in amazing condition.
00:04:58 - The condition of this trunk is remarkable.
00:05:01 There's no tears. there's no rips in it.
    00:05:02 , there's no mildew or mold.
00:05:04 The silk-lined inside is great shape.
    00:05:06 All the hinges work.
00:05:07 This thing is in probably excellent condition, I would say, for the year and the age of it.
    00:05:12 ..
    00:05:14 - I'd like to sell it.
00:05:15 - And how much did you want for it?
    00:05:16 - Well, I don't knowif my hopes are high, but I'd like $15,000.
00:05:20 - Um, yeah, your hopesare real high.
    00:05:22 [chuckles] - Okay.
    00:05:25 - I mean,when you're talking $15,000, you're beginning to talk likethe trunks i told you about.
    00:05:30 - What's a more realistic idea,then, in your eyes?
00:05:32 - I'm assuming this thingis worth right around 4 grand.
    00:05:34 - Uh-huh. - $4,500 if I'm lucky.
00:05:36 - Well, I've done a lot of different research on the internet, just looking at ones that have sold in the past, and there were some between $12,000 and $20,000, ..
00:05:44 - If you want to put it in an auction, go ahead.
00:05:46 Just so you know, they're gonna charge you 30%, 40%.
00:05:48 And even at auction, I don't see you getting more than, like, 4,500 bucks for this thing.
00:05:51 , and then they're gonna charge you commission.
    00:05:54 - Right.
00:05:55 - I really love this, and I'd love to have it, but $2,500is what I'm willing to pay.
00:05:58 - Yeah, that's gonna bea little bit less than what I was hoping fortoday.
00:06:02 - Okay, sorry we couldn't make a deal, but thanks for bringing it in, man.
    00:06:05 - $2 500 Is an absolute rip-off.
00:06:07 I'm negotiable, but that's just out of line.

Yes, I can't remember the name of the show. It's the one where the guys have their own auction house and there's the lady that always on the phone with customers wishing to bid on an item. Why can't I remember the name of the show? Anyway, the lady that won the auction was interviewed outside and she said her daughter had always told her that if a LV trunk ever turned up, that she needed to bid on it. :shrugs:
