It's so lovely that you helped out those children while they helped you out too. Two of my Aunty's and Uncle's travelled to Vietnam earlier this year and loved it. I hope you're feeling okay, and yes material things aren't as important as having a family that loves you

I can kinda understand now why you always see celebrities adopting children from third world countries. (Angelina Jolie anyone?!).While I was at the Orphanage, I just wanted to adopt them all. If I had money like Bill Gates...I probably would have. lol

Loved your story, GUY. Wow. You don't know--or maybe now you do--how lucky you are to have a loving family that cares about you, a mom that listens to you. Not having that throughout life is like trying to erect a building without foundation. Believe me, I know. Thanks for sharing this amazing story. Hope you're feeling better now.

hey Guy, thanks for sharing your incredible story. It brought tears to my eyes. I just got back from in Thailand. Although we stayed pretty much in the touristy areas, it's pretty evident how hard some people have it. But everywhere, people were smiling and nice to us and so appreciative. It just put into perspective that my own little whinings are so inconsequential. I mean, I feel hard done by because the economy is topsy turvy as I'm not sure if I should buy a bag! These people don't know where their next meal is coming from. I suppose one small way we're trying to help is by sponsoring a child. Our child is in Peru and he's 4 years old now. It's nice to get letters, photos and progress report, not only of him, but his family and his village. To put it into perspective, it's about the price of a MAC lipstick a month!

Your mum is a wise woman!

^^^ Thank you Arianne. The thought of sponsoring a child have crossed my mind a few times. But, for some reason...I just dont trust those companies (maybe Im just paranoid). Ive always wondered hOw much money actually goes to the family/ies?

well, GUY, you are right on that

I make monthly donation to st jude children hospital and recently i read a report, it says only 46% (i think so, can't remember the exact %) of donation is used on the children.

I was really unhappy about that and called them right away, wanted to cancel my donation, but when i was on hold to be transferred, i changed me mind. If i cancel it, those kids wont even have a single cent from me. So, i just decided to keep doing it.

Yeah, I suppose they money also goes to administrative and marketing costs for the organisation - but linvline is right, at least some of the money does go to the child. The goal of the organisation that I sponsor through is to develop programs for the community as a whole to make them sustainable in the long run. With the money, they build schools, water wells and provide education on health care etc. So it's not just giving money to the child, but using the money for the benefit of the community as a whole. Once they become self-sufficient, the organisation leaves the community and you no longer need to sponsor. This could take up to 15 years.
