    Default Worried (about a kitty)...

Hey girls, does anyone know how much it is to buy insulin and such for a diabetic cat? My parents' cat is 4 years old and the vet thinks he might be diabetic. The strange thing is that he doesn't display the typical symptoms. My parents won't be able to have his urine tested until Monday. But I talked to my mom and she said that they wouldn't be able to afford taking care of a diabetic cat and that they will probably just have him put to sleep. I argued saying that they could at least find him a new home somewhere, there is even a no-kill cat rescue in town. My mom said that nobody would want to adopt a diabetic cat and that she would rather have him put to sleep than give him away to someone anyway. WHAT?!

Okay, I just looked on some pet medication websites and it is $125 for a 10ml vial. OMG, how long does that last? It doesn't seem like it would last very long.

    Wow, that's expensive.

If she can't take care of him, maybe call around to some no kill shelters. I'm sure there are people that would be willing to meet its special needs. Poor thing!

I'm not sure what is going to happen if it costs lots of $$$ to care for him. What is most upsetting is that my mom didn't seem to like the idea of finding him a new home. She said she would rather have him put to sleep. I just don't understand. I mean, is she really that selfish?

    Good Luck!

I hope you find a good home. There are places that try to find homes for cats with needs and there are people willing to adopt them too. This cat does not have to be put down. Please convince your'e mom.

Most times, with younger cats, it's a matter of diet change and they won't need to insulin. Email me directly please and I'll give you some links and email addys for people who are experts on this.

Oh, I am so sorry! My dog is diabetic. He was diagnosed a little over a year ago. They changed his diet and put him on insulin and now he's back to his normal feisty self. His insulin is about $35 for a 10ml vial and a box of syringes is around $20 for 100. The insulin lasts us a little under a month, but that will depend on how much insulin your kitty requires a day. I can't imagine there will be that much of a price difference in insulin for cats. I hope everything works out for you and your precious kitty!

I've been doing some reading and I guess dog insulin is a lot different from cat insulin. They have to make it differently because cats metabolize it much faster or something.

Hmm, that's interesting. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I hope that Maeveyblue is right and all you need to do is change the diet. Good luck!

I hope the kitty isn't diabetic and if he is that your mom will give him to a good home or a no kill shelter. There's still hope without having him put down!

I just talked to my mom again today. If it comes back that he really is diabetic, he will probably be handed a death sentence. I tried pleading with her to find him a home, but she acts like it would be less traumatic for him to just be put down. I still think she is being horribly selfish and I'm not sure if their is much I can do to change her mind. I can only hope now that the pee results come back and say he's not diabetic.
