    Default Future...

    Hi all,

Well its coming to the time of year where I have to start applying for all the graduate schemes and courses I wish to get on. I've been doing a lot of thinking and one of the professions that appeals to me is Primary School teaching. Does anyone here teach the youngsters.. I think its Elementary School in the States (age 4-11)? I really can't decide if its for me or not. The money is very good and obviously 12 weeks of holidays per year is fab. I love kids, but I'm unsure of whether I'm the 'teaching type'. I remember teachers as being frumpy and usually quite boring lol. Any advice would be great Thanks girls xxxxxx

You don't have to be boring and frumpy! You could be the fun and fashionable teacher! I think with decisions like this you really have to go with your gut. Do you think that you will be happy? I think teaching would be fun!

Well I love little kids, and I love that kids are naughty and mischeivous so I don't think that side would bother me. I think that maybe its something that would suit me in that way. I'm unsure if I'm organised enough lol. I'm trying to set up some experience in a local school to see how I find it.

I think it's a blast teaching kids, especially that age because they are so open to everything and so willing to learn. Everything is new to them.
I've only ever taught my two and then when I've subbed at their co-op, but there is never a dull moment. I say go for it!

Lol, you don't have to be frumpy and boring. I have a couple friends who are elementary teachers (kindergarten + 2nd grade). The one that teaches K is always talking about how much she loves her job and how fun it is.. the other one, just says it's challenge to get their attention. lol.

My advise would be just to take a couple courses, then see if you could substitute for a couple hours to see if it's for you

Lol thanks girls!! I've emailed the guy at my uni who sorts out placments in schools (I'd get 600 for 15 days experience in a school, which people usually do for free) to see if its possible to apply for teacher training without the 15 days yet. If not I'm thinking maybe take a year out, possibly as a teaching assistant, and then apply to do the PGCE next year. If I manage to it counts as half the credits for a Masters in Education so that's also a bonus!

I fought with this same decision earlier this past Summer. I have a Business Degree and have been working my tail off for the past 12 years in Corporate America. No such thing as life balance there! Anyway, I finally made my decision and took the plunge to become a certified teacher. Because of my history I made the decision to go back and get a secondary education degree. It will help me be well prepared for my cert testing. Best of luck to you! You will be great if you enjoy teaching others, being patient and relinquishing your overall results to the results of your students! It's a big change!

Aww it sounds like you've made a good decision, will you be teaching Business Studies or another subject? Thanks and good luck to you too!
