    Default In shock

I'm sitting here, stunned, and not sure how to proceed with things. I had horrible news yesterday and am still trying to digest it all. It appears that a woman dropped off 15 cats to the rescue facility 2 weeks ago. We weren't taking in any, but because they were coming from the charter in Houston and she was dealing with the hurricane, we made room. We quarentined them, like we always do but they weren't in strict lockdown because there was no mention of illnesses or deaths within her facility.
Fast forward a week. 3 of our grown-ups die and 5 kittens (but the kittens are normal because they are so young and vulnerable). One of the grown-ups hit me hard because I was going to bring him homend then didn't. I am now thanking God I didn't bring him home because my guys would have been infected then.
Fast forward to this Tuesday. 6 more cats have died within 2 days. All within this one room. None of them are from Houston. They are all our Dallas guys. They were all healthy, active youngsters (6 months to 3 yrs old). The first two were taken in for an autopsy (sent to A & M vet school) and it comes back it is Hemorrhagic calici, which is highly contagious and rapidly fatal. Apparently the Houston cats are carriers and when we have been feeding and changing litter boxes and petting, the virus has been spreading.
The mortality rate is 60% on this virus. The worst part of all of this, as if it can get any worse since there are so many babies there at risk and who are going to die from this, is that I could have brought the virus home. I have 3 high risk babies. All 3 are sick right now with their normal change of the weather issues but they are all worse than usual. I'm afraid I'm going to lose them and there isn't a single thing I can do about it.
We need prayers here big time!

OMG, Maevey, I am so so sorry. It is such awful thing to go through losing all those kitties at the rescue facility and worrying that your own would be affected. When will you be able to tell if the your kitties are in the clear? It makes my kitty issue not as grave now. Lots to hugs and prayers going your way. Keep us posted!

Oh Maevey. That is such sad news. I can't even begin to imagine the worry and the stress that you are going through not knowing if your babies are going to be alright. I would be beside myself. I hope and pray that your babies are going to be fine. Your babies will definitely be in my prayers.:hug: Stay positive.

This has a 1 to 2 week incubation period so anywhere from Monday to 2 weeks from then will be when mine are clear. So far there haven't been any fatalities today at the facility.
My guys are hanging in there. I had my vet friend come over and give fluids and B12 to my 3 who are the worst and then quarentined them in my bedroom, with the other two in the rest of the house. Sadly because they share the same food and water, they are probably all infected my now so quarentining is a little too late.

And Arienne, it doesn't make yours seems smaller in the least. It makes me realize, once again, how fragile life is and how much our little ones depend on us. Your baby is so lucky to have you.

I have a feeling that they will all be okay as well. Just stay positive. And I'm sorry to hear that this happened. Sometimes even out best intentions don't turn out like we had hoped, even if we did everything right and tried our hardest.
