    Default Upset about my (new) car

    Hey girls! So we went and picked up my new car yesterday. Remember before how there were stupid things that I didn't like about the car? And my husband wanted to get it anyway because it is a good car? Well, I decided that I could live with all the stupid stuff. But today we discovered something. We were driving and it was raining pretty hard. My husband braked pretty hard and the car skidded a little. Upon further investigation, we realized that the car didn't have ABS. I thought that it had and now I'm just horrified. I'm scared bad enough when it comes to driving on the snow in the winter. Why on earth doesn't this car have ABS?! It's a 1999, you would have though it would come standard!

    No, I don't think we can return it. Cars are an "As Is" sort of thing. I'm just so upset right now and Mr BRS isn't talking to me. He's angry because I'm practically crying over the car not having ABS. I assumed that it had it when I bought it because my old car had it (it was a 96) and both my parents' cars have it (02 and 04). Why doesn't this car have it?!

    Oh, and thanks BTW. I'll have to take a picture when it's not dark and rainy so you can see it.

    Sorry about that... I honestly have no idea what ABS is, but I hope the vehicle is still drivable, is it??!

    ABS = Anti-lock Braking System

    When the road is slick, the ABS senses if the tires are starting to loose traction. Then the ABS kicks in and makes the brakes pulsate when you're trying to stop. It helps you maintain control of the car. I think most vehicles come with it now and people probably don't even notice.

    ^ i think even now, ABS isn't necessarily standard. it might be the particular trim of the model, like a "Value Package" or something. that's unfortunate.

    is Mr. bRs angry because there is no ABS, or because you're upset that there is no ABS?

    Sorry to hear bRs! That really stinks. I assumed all cars or most had ABS. How bad was it skidding?

    Mr BRS is mad because I'm complaining about the car. We did everything right when buying the car. We took it to a mechanic and had it checked, we got a Carfax report, and we test drove is several times. We even had my dad come take a look at it. Everything checked out okay and the mechanic we took it to said that he would even buy the car because it was obvious it was well cared for. So yeah, Mr BRS is pretty upset with me. He said some pretty nasty things to me last night and he threatened me. I sort of understand his frustration since we had to put more money towards the car than we actually had available to spend. But we had to in order to get a halfway decent car.

    Anyway, yes ABS is considered an "option". But why would a car with a power sunroof, power antennae (that's missing), a CD player, and factory tinting not have ABS selected as an option? What kind of weirdos were these people (the ones that bought the car new)? As far as how bad it skidded, it wasn't really bad. But this was on rough pavement when it was raining outside... not when there was a ton of ice and snow on the ground.

    Can you trade cars with Dh in the winter when the roads are slick? I do understand your nervousness.

    How awful! I'm sorry to hear about the missing ABS. Yeah, I thought it came with all newer cars -- why didn't the original owners get it -- that's so weird.

    It should be okay.. you just have to be super careful!! You just cant slam on your brakes because then your tires will lock up and you'll skid.

    I'm so sorry you're upset. Safety features should come standard with cars. It's so dumb that ABS is optional. But you can still use in winter, but be careful. I had a really old car when I was in college with no ABS. You'll have to drive carefully and pump the brakes in slick situations and not slam on it like Jennifer said. And if it gets really icy, you should use chains anyway.

    ^^^ Chains are illegal here. We can't have them on our tires inside of town.
