Grin Should I get a turtle?

Have any of you guys ever owned, or know of anyone who's owned a turtle? Are they hard to care for?

A couple days ago I went to the petstore, just to pick up some stuff for Frisky and Professor Watson, and when I walked past the turtle area I was drawn in.. they are so cute.

My fear: The kitty army will scare it. Do they get frightened? Like if 2 cats are staring at you through the cage

    Will they be friends?

Or will the turtle mean a meanie

i have a turtle, like.... more than 10 yrs
it was very small and now as big as my face...
it's not hard to take care of, just feed it some vege, let it walk sometimes around the area... but.. you have to clean the tank EVERYDAY, or it gets really really SMELLY.

i don't know how cat and turtle will get along... but when i first had the turtle, i had hamster, i put them to play together and those hamster thought turtle is food, try to drag to turtle to their cage.. it was very funny...

Are there different types of turtles? What kind do you have? I had no idea that the pet store ones get really big..

About the cleaning the tank - do you have filter? Or does that not matter, and it would still have to be cleaned everyday?

Yeh, I read a story in the news.. this guy had his Toirtoise from being a kid, it had even been buried under debris and concrete during the Blitz of WW2. The poor tortoise had been living in his garden recently, until Seagulls started attacking it.. So poor lil Tortoise now gets frustrated and kinda growls at his owner to let him out lol! I don't know if Turtle's live as long as Tortoises though.

my turtle is the common snapping turtle, i bought a pair but one died after few weeks. I used to feed them vege only, but it wont grow, so i tried the pet store's food and it grew like crazy. But i guess it stops growing now. I dont have the turtle with me, my parent helps me taking care of it...there was one time they feed it mango, i was shocked because i thought it got diarrhea or something...

I don't have the filtered tank for it, because turtle likes to rest on the rock sometimes. So, it's just a small tank with few inches of water level. Turtle poo a lot and smelly, so the water get dirty easily...

I had one. The idea of them is cute but they are really dirty, so the cage needs to be cleaned out constantly. And it isn't to do like a litter box. I would say don't do it. But jmo.

This is what I'm mostly afraid of -- the smell. Im going to wander over to the petstore tonight and take a glance at them again. .

I've had turtles in the past & I LOVE them! It can get pricey as far as the stuff for them. The last one I had I bought a huge aquarium for him. It is also good to have half water & half "land", depending on the type of turtle. The pet stores sell floating rocks that suction to the side of the tank so the turtle can hop on the rock if it wants to be out of water. They are very easy to take care of aside from cleaning the tank. As long as you clean it frequently enough you will be fine.

I don't think it will get afraid if the cats are just looking at him through the tank. I have dogs and mine didn't get scared. I don't know if this is true or not, but I've heard that the larger tank you get for it, the bigger it grows. I guess if it is confined to a smaller space it is not going to grow as large.

SO, I would say get one! They are very low maintenance pets!

We have a turtle, he's a baby eastern box turtle. But we didn't buy him from the pet store, i found him under some rotted leaves. He's very easy to take of. As to whether or not you need to clean it's cage every day, it depends on what kind you get. If it's an entirely aquatic turtle, then yes you will have to clean it every day or install some sort of filtration system, but they can get pricey. Regardless of the filtration system, the cage will still need to be cleaned out in it's entirety every week or so. If it's a terrestrial turtle like ours is, he'll still need some sort of a little pond, which will still have to be dumped out, rinsed and refilled every day, but it's much easier to dump out a pond and clean it, then it is the whole aquarium. Whatever you do, DON'T USE SOAP! You could end up killing the turtle, if you need to more thoroughly clean it, buy a cleanser that is specifically for cleaning reptile enclosures. The reason for all this cleaning is because turtles produce copious amounts of waste, and it's not healthy for them to live in, nor as a another person pointed out does it smell nice. As for putting it with your cats, i wouldn't advise it, number one they could try to hurt him, number two and more importantly turtles can transmit diseases to you and possibly your cats, i wouldn't risk it, number three turtles can be surprisingly fast and it could get away. Cats staring at them won't bother them one way or another, we have 3 and he doesn't seem to care, and if he does get scared he'll simply retreat into his shell or hide, Turtles in my experience aren't mean, and when provoked will simply retreat in their shell. Make certain you feed it a proper diet, our little guy loves slugs, crickets, spiders and pillbugs, but yours will probably eat a different diet. It's crucial for the health of the the turtle, that you find out whether it's an omnivore, carnivore or herbivore. No matter what though, don't feed it pet food of any kind, except commercial turtle diet. If you do get a turtle, be sure to wash your hands every time after you handle the turtle or clean it's cage. Turtles that you can buy from the pet store, don't typically live to be 50+ years, that's primarily tortoises, and yes there is a difference between the two. If you buy one, i'd advise buying one from the US, because turtles that have been shipped here from a foreign country, tend to have complicated husbandry needs, and are typically stressed and could have worms or other diseases. This is a website with a ton of great and accurate info, Reptiles Magazine and the magazine is equally as great, i subscribe, since in addition to the turtle, we have toads and lizards.

I would get a box turtle (they are really a kind of tortoise and they live outside the water). They are pretty easy to care for... just feed them some crickets and veggies. And you'll need a heat lamp for them. You'll have to check what the recommended temperature is for those little guys. When we had our lizard, the temp under the lamp had to be 120 degrees. I don't think box turtles need it that hot, but you do need to keep them warm. And yes, like all reptiles, their poo smells. So you need to clean their cage out often. I've found that the turf stuff is pretty easy to clean though. Turtles can become very tame if you handle them all the time. They aren't the most affectionate animals, but they are less likely to try to take your fingers off (my lizard sure wanted a piece of you). An exception to this would be a snapping turtle... I wouldn't have one of those. LOL!

I have always heard that you can get samonella or some kind of disease from turtles...
IDK, it could just be certain species though.

i don't know about turtles and cats but i think turtles are cute in general.
i bought mine from chinatown, (i'm guessing it's like the basic kind of turtle) lol.
anyways, i bought two and we would put them on the table and have turtle races, haha, i loved them.

then one day.. they just. died.

^ same with my cousin. I think someone bought her two little turtles from China town for her birthday. Then 2 months later out of nowhere they died. But, they were the cutest little things! Too bad they died too soon.
