I would pick a car that goes best with your handbags......!!! No, seriously, I have always heard Honda civics were good, and I own a Honda Odyssey minivan that has been nothing but great! They always seem to get good reviews, and I know a couple people who have owned civics and loved them.

Okay, the 02 Honda Accord is out. We walked up to the place which was an auto shop with a sign up that said Auto Sales on it. But when we asked if we could look at the car, the guy there said it didn't belong to them. He said we'd have to talk to the guy up the street with the "lot" which is really a bunch a junkie looking cars surrounded by tall weeds. But then he said that it had electrical problems anyway and that is (presumably) why it was there. ::sigh::

This is so hard. I have heard good things about Hondas too. But there aren't very many out there to choose from at the moment and the ones that are out there, the majority of them have a manual transmission.

On a lighter note, we did look at another Nissan today. It's a 99 Altima, but it has 98,000 miles on it. It seemed really nice though and they actually had all of the servicing records for the car.

Nashville - From what I've heard, Hyundai is evil.

I owned a Hyundai once, and it was brand new, but I had nothing but problems with that car. Then, when I decided to trade it in for a new car, it was like no one wanted it! I must tell you this was about 13 years ago, so they may be better now. Also, if you are buying used, you need to consider if there is a place near where you live to get repairs done that will be able to get the parts for the car. That was a real problem for me in Colorado Springs for my Hyundai.

I should also mention (i forgot) that we owned a used Nissan Pathfinder for several years, and my Husband's parents had one for almost 16 years and they were both great vehicles! That is my only experience with Nissan.

My Dad has owned two Hyundai's and they're actually extremely reliable, from our experience (hes a mechanic/fitter so knows his stuff). I'd reccomend the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra, they're both quite nice looking cars. Apparantly the most reliable cars to buy are from the east, so Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Honda, Toyota are all supposed to be pretty reliable. If I lived in America I'd have a big 4x4 our roads and parking spaces are too small in the UK for them lol!

Okay... we're interested in two cars. One is a 98 Nissan Maxima and the other one is a 99 Nissan Altima.

    Maxima:
    Dark Blue
    73,000 miles on it
    V6
    Power seats
    Around $7,000

    Altima:
    White
    96,000 on it
    4 cylinder
    Sun roof (powered)
    Around $5,000

So this is tough now because they are both pretty nice cars and they both have dumb things about them that I don't like. The Maxima is $2,000 more than the Altima and it's also $1,000 over our doable budget. The Maxima has less miles on it though and a bigger engine. Then again, the Altima would probably get better gas mileage with its smaller engine. The Maxima is a pretty dark blue color and I like how you sit up higher and can actually see over the hood. What I don't like is that the stereo is literally melted on the inside. It still works, but you can't read the display. So you'd have to get a new one with a face plate. The Altima on the other hand has the spiffy sun roof. It's white though, and I don't really like white cars. The retractable antennae in the Maxima has, unfortunately, been broken off. The stereo still works, but it would be nice to have the antennae replaced. Oh, but the car dealer actually has all of the service records for the Altima. The Maxima is at another dealership and they know nothing about the car or where it came from.

What do you think? Does one sound better than the other? Or should we keep looking? We have been scouring the city (and surrounding areas) for days now. Ugh!

If you're unsure you should keep looking, afterall there are many cars and $5000+ is a lot of money. If you keep looking maybe your perfect car will just turn up :)

bRs, from what you've said it sounds to me like the Altima is better, especially because of the service records. The Maxima is more money & you are going to have to get a new antenna and radio. From your post, it sounded like the only thing you weren't too fond of on the Altima is the color. Plus it has a sunroof!!

Did you do CARFAX vehicle history reports on them? Sometimes the dealers have them ready for you, so you should inquire about that. Otherwise you have to go online with the VIN, but you have to pay for each car you are checking.

^^^ Oops... I meant to say the retractable antennae on the Altima has been broken off. There is something wrong radio-wise with both cars. The Altma is missing the antennae and the Maxima has the melted display. Sorry!

I like the Altima better because it's less expensive and it has a 4 cylinder for better gas mileage (okay, and the sunroof is pretty cool). I know it's silly of me to not like the color. But it's white with gold trim because it's some sort of limited edition model. I told my husband it looked like a pimp car. ROFL! My husband doesn't like the fact that it has more miles on it than the Maxima. Plus I think he secretly likes the bigger engine in the Maxima.

We haven't done car fax reports yet, but we will if we think we're to the point where we may actually want to buy.

We've been looking for what seems like an eternity already. LOL! It's hard because we are looking for specific makes in a specific price range and there just aren't very many out there to choose from.

For the perfect combination of bang-for-your-buck value and aesthetically pleasing looks, I'd go for the 1999-2002 Accord Coupe. The exterior is sporty and beautiful IMO with sleek lines and a clean look. Inside can range from pleasingly comfy to high end luxe (depending on the model you get). The amount of space in the car is unbelievable; the front and back seats offer so much room, and the trunk is so spacious! With an EX V6, you can get premium leather seats, a kick ass sound system, a finely tuned performance V6 eingine, along with great gas mileage and all the badass little things that come with a fully loaded car. Finding one that is within your price budget can very well be done; search cars.com for all the Honda Accords near you. =)

Just my two cents. Good luck with your search.

I miss my 99 V6 EX Accord Coupe. It was my favorite car E-V-E-R!! However, I don't think bRs will be able to find one that is in her price range. I paid $12,000 for mine in 2002 with 75,000 miles on it...

^^^ Yeah, you're right. Hondas that are that new are selling for more like $8,000. We have looked everywhere for Honda Accords and Civics. There just aren't very many out there in our price range. And then those that are in our price, the majority of them have a manual transmission. I couldn't drive a stick shift if my life depended on it. LOL!
