Default A meaningful gift that doesn't cost a lot?

I'm thinking about birthdays already... well, most notably, MY birthday. LOL! With funds being low, I'm not really sure what to tell my husband to get me this year (he has a fee months yet).
I was just wondering, what are some great gifts you girls (and guy) have gotten in the past that didn't cost a lot of money. But don't say flowers, candy, act of kindness, or anything that was no longer around after awhile. I want something I can always keep and look at to remind me of the gift... you know what I mean?

Do you guys have one of those ceramic stores around you where you go in, buy something, then paint it there? My HS boyfriend did this for me, he got a picture frame, painted it with things we've done or stupid sayings we had, and even after we broke up I still love that frame! Im pretty sure it cost like $30 or less

Last year I made my stepdad a mug with my face on it and a funny quote. He uses it everyday. It was $20 from zazzle.com

When my bf and I first starting dating he got me this CD that I couldn't find in stores. (We had been only dating a few weeks). I still have the cd...when I listen to it, it brings back good memories! He took me to their concert the following month .

The most thoughtful gift I have ever received was a locket with a picture of my Mother and Grandmother in it. The locket itself was like 50 dollars but I have never had a gift that was more was worth more. Also, if he had the time, he could collect pictures for you that you maybe never saw before growing up and of your loved ones and put them in a really pretty album. I received a photo album of my 3 little furry babies and it rouched my heart in a million different ways. I know a lot of People are into scrap booking but I personally don't know any men who do it. Also Tiffany's has really nice Silver jewelry that won't break the bank, like a necklace for 100 dollars.

hmmm... I bought my hubby a bamboo plant when he was in the hospital... They are pretty cheap and easy to take care of...

The ceramic idea is pretty good that dannielle had... I took my stepkid to one of those places for my husbands b day one year and it is one of his most cherished possessions, especially because he hasn't seen that child in 2 years now so he looks at it a lot and remembers it...

What about him looking for a vintage purse? Something small and not that $$$

I know you said "not flowers" but an orchid would be so nice and thoughtful. The thrill of getting them to rebloom is so rewarding. Just a thought.

What about an unusual pendant?

For our 5th anniversary, we were both unemployed and in the process of relocating, so we weren't ablt to indulge in any big gifts. However, dh was working with someone at the time who knew how to cut decorative acrylic pieces so I have a heart with our names and anniversary date on it. It was cheap and I still love it (and now my oldest dd has it in her room). What about a little keepsake like that (a little box with your names on it from Things Remembered or somewhere similar might be really nice)?
