Default Now I'm the one having the bad day...

Gee... everything was going so well this morning. We just watched a video in lab and then we left an hour and a half early. I was thinking how great it was and how much homework I was going to get done (I have a ton of stuff due tomorrow). Wow...
So I started working on some stuff and then I decided to take a break and eat some lunch. Then my husband called me from his cell phone. No big deal, he always calls me around that time. Well it turns out that he was calling because he had cut his finger really bad and he wanted me to meet him at the emergency room. We went in at about 12:30 this afternoon and we didn't leave until after 4:00. I was mostly worried about his fingernail since the saw he was using had cut his finger going underneath his nail and down the side of his finger. He also had a fracture in the bone... so that's why it too so long. We had to go up to the Orthopaedic Surgeon's office to have them take a look at it.
Anyways, I ended up missing my entire chemistry lab that I'll have to make up somehow. Now I still have tons of homework to do that is due tomorrow. I was so glad I had gotten out of my other lab so early this morning because I thought I was going to have plenty of time to get some work done. Now it looks like I might be working on stuff all night.
What worries me the most though is the bill that will be coming from the hospital. My husband lost his insurance when I went back to school because he got health insurance through me. I no longer have health insurance at work because I am no longer full time. I just have the insurance provided at my school... but it only covers me. Oh gosh... there is no way we are going to be able to pay for this. Hope I don't have to start selling my stuff again.
On another note, I guess my parents were having a bad day too. Today was my mom's birthday and my dad sort of ruined it by falling out of his truck and fracturing his wrist. They spent the day at the doctor's office as well.

I'm so sorry to hear about you husband and parents! I'm sure you'll get your school work done! And hopefully you won't need to sell stuff though. Hm, is there a way your in laws or parents could help you out?

Just hang in there!

Haha... yeah right, like neither his parents nor mine will be willing to help us. I'm not expecting them to, especially my parents. They have been acting really weird about money lately.
I guess the best we can hope for is that government thing that's coming in May. ::sigh:: And I was going to use that towards that stupid TV my husband just had to have (and can't afford).
Thanks for your concern though Jess! You're really sweet!

awww feel better. I know the feeling of being overwhelmed with school I've been pulling all-nighters since saturday, and I will be doing the same all weekend too with 2 research papers due Tuesday that I haven't started thanks to my jewelry assignments. I hope your husband feels better. Those emergency room trips are no fun, hopefully the insurance you have through school can help out a bit with those doctor visits! Health insurance is such a joke, always costing tons of money whether you have it or not. Hang in there, I hope things work out for the better!!!!

Maybe you can talk to the hospital if you have problems paying the medical bill. Sometimes they will give you some kind of discount or maybe they will let you make payments on it.

I hope you feel bettter!!

Sadly, the insurance only covers me. It does not apply to a student's spouse. I was so upset when I lost my insurance through work. It was the first time my husband had had insurance in a long time. And now he doesn't have any again. I'm sure the bill is going to be around $2,000. ::sigh:: We'll just have to go to the hospital's billing office when the bill comes and figure out some sort of payment plan. We won't be able to pay it all at once. At least not when they will expect to have payment by.

Guy - Yeah, I thought about that. It is a Catholic hospital, so they might be nice about it if we plead our case. I've heard of other people being able to get a portion of their bill forgiven. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Oh gees, sorry to hear about your husband and dad. You should be able to make payments.. although I remember when I was in college and I had to go to the hospital - they wouldn't let me make payments on the ambulance ride ($1900 for like 3 blocks! im sure i could have staggered there. haha ) I had really crappy insurance plan.

Take care!

hey... Calm down... Its going to be okay...

First step is to contact the hospital. Most of them will forgive a large portion of the bill - especially if it is affiliated with a religious organization.

Second step ... Do NOT pay the bill via credit card ... A hospital cannot to my knowledge make collection attempts on you as long as you are making payments ... Even if its only $5 per month and normally there is no interest ... My hubby had kidney stones and spent the night at the hospital and I carry a decent policy and it still set us back $5000 ... I just pay $50 per month.

If you are a member of a church, don't be ashamed to go to them and ask for help - that is why they have benevolence budgets is for people like you and your husband who are bettering themselves and something beyond their control happens...

Was your husband at work when this happened? If so, he is eligible for coverage under workmans comp ... If his employer says otherwise call a lawyer relatively quickly - they will help you free upfront and then take a percentage ( usually 1/3 ) of a settlement ... And the settlemnt will be for med bills plus pain and suffering

Whew... That was a lot of typing on this touch screen ... Hope it helps...chin up and everything will be okay....

Thanks Nashville, I will definitely be talking to them at the hospital to see what can be done about the bill. Like I said before, I have heard of people getting portions of their hospital bills forgiven if they can prove that they don't have the means to pay.
As for the worker's comp... yes he did injure himself while at work but he's self employed so there's really no one to get money from there. LOL!

Does he carry Wc insurance? Its usually a state funded thing ... You pay the state premiums if you are self employed... I'd at least check on the options...

And no matter what the hospital says... Don't let them pressure you in to paying the bill off fast... As long as you are trying, there is not much they can do ( but if you get church money put that all to that bill obviosly )
My dad was an officer of a church while I grew up and people were always asking for $$$. He always gave at least $100 to them, more if they brought him a bill and let him have the church pay it directly

Just promise me you won't use a credit card or student loan $$$$ for this...

On the bright side... At least there was no surgery or an overnight stay involved...

Nashville - Nope, no WC insurance either. Hehe... he used to have it but he got rid of it a few years back. Thanks for trying so hard to help!

Well you're really sweet, so I thank you for that. And I promise there will be no use of credit cards or student loans to pay the bill. We'll look into our other options first.
