Thank you for the compliment!
Well.. first off.. splenda is BAD! Yes.. it reduces calories, carbs and all that stuff.. but they are saying now that substances like splenda, aspartame (sp?), sweet and low, etc... are cancer causing agents. When I was taking all my health classes.. all my teachers... said the whole NO CARB thing was ridiculous. And it's so true.... I eat carbs.. I actually try to each bread everyday. Truth to matter.. if you do not consume carbs.. yes the weight will come off very easily.. BUT... the day you eat one carb.. you will gain like 5 lbs! If I would of followed up being a nutritionist (I still might, and be a freelance writer) I would of told my patients to eat carbs. There is nothing wrong with carbs... but instead of eating all white carbs.. try to go for whole grain. Eat whole grain bread, and they even have wheat pasta, and brown rice. You need those carbs... or you will see the pounds right when you eat some. True Story, my aunt did the whole "no carb" diet. She went to this Dr. Weight Watch. Totally bogus... I still till this day don't believe that guy went to college. She lost a ton of weight... like 20 lbs within 3 weeks. She is heavy.. the heavier you are.. the easier it is for weight to come off. We went one night to eat Italian food.. she thought she would "treat" herself. I told her.. "guarantee you.. you will wake up 10 lbs heavier." She didn't believe me. She had Chicken parm with spaghetti and 1 garlic roll. And sure enough she woke up the next morning.. 8 lbs heavier. You can't deprive your body of something, because once you eat it.. forget it. You have to treat yourself, and you can't deprive. The more you deprive, the more you crave, the more likely you are to fail at losing weight. The whole... don't eat after 6... is ridiculous too. It all depends what time you go to bed. Yes you shouldn't eat after 6... if you are going to bed at about 9. You should give your body 3 hours of digestion before you go to bed. So if you go to bed at 12.. eat by 9. When you are eating, your metabolism kicks in. People make the mistake of eating then going straight to bed. When you sleep.. your metabolism stops.. hence why people wake up in the morning heavier. ALSO, drink lots of water! I can't emphasize that enough. People should drink 6 to 8 bottles of water a day. Why? It flushes out all the toxins and prevents you from gaining a ton of weight. Yes this might sound gross but "NOT going to the bathroom.. cough cough" at least 3 times a day is bad. The more you go.. the better. If you don't go.. that's what causes weight gain. Any nutritionist will tell you, 3 times a day is good.. anything less... bad. If you exercise an hour a day, drink lots of water, cut out some sugar, you should be good. If you want a break down of what you should eat. Let me know... I know all the plans in my head. For instance.. you should only eat red meat twice a week, and chicken 3-4. And you should only eat a piece as big as your fist. Why? they inject hormones in chicken, meat, turkey.. pretty much everything unless it says organic. Too much consumption of hormones is not good for us. Think about.. they inject hormones in these animals to make them grow faster and fatter... what can it do to us if we consume them? Also.. salad is really good to eat.. but you need more with it. If you read the label of salad... it has no fat but also no nutrition value. Eat other things with it, don't deprive the body.. because then at dinner time you'll indulge. Watch out for sodium too... sodium retains water weight.. leading to higher numbers on the scale. ANy questions.. ask away.. I have all my books still from my nutrition classes.

Okay, I know this is going to sound bad... but I HAVE to have a soda at lunch. I need the caffeine and I absolutely hate coffee and tea. I can't drink diet soda though because the artificial sweeteners upset my stomach (my dad too... our bodies just don't agree with it). Also I had read too that they are bad for you... although I thought Splenda was supposed to be the "safest" so far. So is that bad if I have one soda a day? I really don't each sugary things otherwise (except for the occasional ice cream cone in the summer). I hate anything with vinegar in it... so I'm not even taking in sugar through condiments like salad dressing.
![]() Oh and Marissa, I had switched to all whole grain stuff (well as much as I could anyway) and then my doctor told me not to eat any bread at all. And I was like WTF? Aren't whole grains good for your heart? Not to mention they are a source of fiber. ![]()

And actually vinegar is good for you. It speeds up the metabolism, rapidly. Like not even joking, you eat something and it slides off. My nutrition professor, told us she drinks a tablespoon of vinegar a day just to speed up her metabolism. Must explain why she was as skinny as a rail! I agree though, vinegar is nasty. A lot of people drink soda for caffeine. Breakfast is your main meal and should be your biggest. Breakfast is when you can pretty much eat whatever you want because my the end of the day, your metabolism has already depleted everything you ate at breakfast. Eating breakfast would give you energy throughout the day, as well as taking a B-Complex vitamin in the AM. B-Complex energizes the body. Also, if you were to get a little cardio workout in the AM, you would be surprised how wide awake you will be the whole entire day. When it comes to a doctor telling you what to eat NEVER LISTEN. Yes, doctors go to medical school, but they take NO CLASSES on nutrition. Their curriculum is all medical. They have no clue of what a nutritionist knows. I had this fight with me now ex-BF (so complicated) all the time. His father is a doctor... and that's fine. But when it comes to nutrition, I feel he has no idea what he is talking about. All 3 of his boys are skinny as a rail, and are under 5'7. Literally the 18 year old is 5'2. He never let them drink milk or any other dairy product (even when they were little), or anything with a tiny bit of fat. Because of this.. the boys look mal-nutritioned. The body NEEDS milk (calcium) and fat. Especially women need as much calcium as we can get, because we are more prone to getting osteoporosis. And the body NEEDS fat. You can not eat healthy all the time, and not have fat. Even the food pyramid says we need fat, but doctors neglect to really read what it says. Respect them, they just have no clue about nutrition. Whole grains are good for you because they have fiber. Not to sound gross, but fiber is what makes us go to the bathroom. Without fiber you will be pretty constipated, lol. If you don't eat whole grains you are pretty much eating everything white. White bread, pasta, etc.. is bleached. It was once wheat, and they bleached it for the more appealing eye. Like my Mother, she won't eat any bread unless it's white. Something mentally, people just don't like bread unless it's white. White bread isn't bad for you, but it doesn't have the nutrients anymore due to being bleached. Any other questions ask away!

Marissa, you rock! I loved everything that you said. I remember reading about Fergie and the vinegar so now I know why she had a tablespoon- to speed up the metabolism, gotcha! I may try that- right now I would try almost anything to shed the eight pounds that wont move. I am walking 30 a day, and trying to drink more water, eat more fruit and drink less coke. I normally will drink a coke with lunch but only about a 1/3...I only drink while I am eating and then after lunch I dont save it and keep drinking, I normally toss it. I need the caffiene rush from time to time. With water...I hate the tast sometime so I have tried SPA WATER. I will add cucumbers and sliced lemons to add a little flavor. I loved your comments, I have added fiber and flax seed to my diet...now its just being more mindful of my sweets! Uuuuggh! |

Try walking 30 a day.. and doing another cardio exercise for another 30. I remember my health and body professor said if you wanna lose weight you really gotta work your heart rate or exercise for an hour a day. She also had said for 45 minutes a day do physical exercise, which would be cleaning the house, doing the wash, mopping the floors, vacuuming, etc. She had said you won't believe how many calories you can shed just by doing daily things. I just washed the dishes.. and with all the hand movements chances are I just lost a good 50 calories or more not even knowing it.
The vinegar thing really does work, I had to do a study/experiment on it. It tastes DISGUSTING, but in 2 weeks, I had lost 6 lbs... just by downing vinegar. It gets your metabolism going instead of resting and having you gain weight. It's great for adults, when people get older their metabolism slows down tremendously. The vinegar gets it going again like someone significantly younger.

Also, it's ok to eat sweets from time to time. Like I said... our body needs fat and you don't want to deprive yourself.Sometimes people deprive themselves then once they see a sweet they indulge completely.
We also need good fats in our bodies like olive oil, nuts, fish, etc. Even peanut butter is fatty.. but it's good fat. Has an excellent source of nutrients, esp. if you are like me and don't eat red meat. Mypyramid.gov.. is an EXCELLENT place to check out the food pyramid.. and I remember they even had food trackers. It's a really cool website.. pretty much all our studies came from that website.

And Marissa, GREAT ADVICE! I used to work for 24 hour fitness and you would not believe how much information i picked up! I'm also a nursing major and have taken a few classes in nutrition, and everything you said is right on the ball.
I know a lot of you find tea really nasty, but seriously, try it! Coffee isn't all that great tasting either, so try switching to tea! Preferably green tea. It gives your metabolism a little boost, and also, IMO, I think it helps curb cravings and appetite. If you can't stand it regular, try it with a little honey or milk. And everyone, don't forget: BREAKFAST is the most important meal of the day! Like Marissa said, you can always eat a yummy big breakfast (not fatty sausages and stuff tho) b/c it'll keep you going all day. I forgot who made a comment about needing a soda everyday for the caffeine boost.. Marissa: have you heard anything bad about those 5 hour energy shots? I don't think they contain sugar, mostly herbs... I can't imagine that'd be too bad if you need it to keep yourself awake, but I'm not positive. As far as exercise goes, I made a thread about this earlier looking for suggestions for songs to put on my ipod.. I know good workout songs helps motivate me to go to the gym.. Also, I used to go to the gym everyday around 1, which was just in time for Days of Our Lives, and would hop on the elliptical and before you knew it, the episode was over, and I had just done an hour of cardio! So if you find it difficult to stay on the elliptical for more than 15 minutes, try tuning in to one of your favorite shows.. it'll make time go by faster.

I want to join too..
Height: 5'4 Weight: 110 Goal: not to loose weight, but to tone up and also keep my weight the same. I've noticed now that I'm working and less running around and walking... I'm slowlying getting meat where I never did before. My main goal though would be to work on my BUTT and waist!!... and I hate excercising.

Alisha is right too... some teas do curb your appetite, and some even help you lost weight. There are even some that increase your metabolism. I don't agree with the weight loss "laxative" teas. THOSE ARE BAD FOR YOU! Laxative's can cause you to get holes in your intestines, and just mess you up completely.. stay away from those. Yup, breakfast is your most important meal. Dinner.. is your least important. I remember my professor telling us, of you want to eat something fatty go for it in the AM. I agree sausage is bad and fatty.. but believe it or not.. it's in some diet books. It's even in my health book, I'm guessing it's for meat eaters. Red meat is a source of iron, and if you are a meat eater... it's better to eat it in the AM instead of PM. Takes your body a while to digest red meat ESPECIALLY pork. I'm a firm believer that people need fat in their diet. Some dietitians don't believe in it.. I do. I believe the body needs fat, as well as carbs.. because if you deprive the body for so long with fat.. that one little bite.. will cost you lbs. I believe in moderation, and treating yourself. That's what I do, and I exercise, and a size 3, 5 foot, 105 lbs. Obviously everyone has different bodies, just don't buy into all these diets out there.. it's fairly simple to lose weight. Just a little will power, healthy eating, exercise, treating yourself so you don't give up... you can lose weight.

For waist.. belly dancing is amazing... crunches.. as well as... I don't what it's called I forgot... you take a weight in each hand.. and bend to each side.. kinda like a tick tock motion. Gets rid of those love handles. If you hate exercising.. get belly dancing DVDs.. you don't feel like your exercising. It's SOOO much fun.. but the next day.. you feel it all over.

That's a good day... to feel less hungry at the day.. eat a big breakfast. It really curbs your appetite. Be careful of what type of milk you use.. I always use skim.. but the best is 2%... regular whole milk.. has a TREMENDOUS about of fat in it. 2% still has the amount of calcium you need, tastes totally different than whole milk though.
