Default Oh my - I feel like such a jerk!!!

So today I went for a consultation to dye my hair. I already have it dyed black but I wanted to put in streaks of color underneath. Anyway - I go in for the consultation and the guy was super nice and was like "if you want to do this now, I just had a cancellation and we can start immediately". So I said yes (esp. since I am going to Vegas for a week on Sunday).

All-in-all it took 2 hours and it's beautiful really. Well it was almost closing time - I pay by credit card and ask to put a tip on the card... she said I couldn't!!! I didn't have any cash on me - not even a check. I told her to apologize for me to him and that I'd come back when I got home from Vegas to give a tip... she didn't seem too worried she said it happens all the time but I feel horrible!!

He went out of his way to help me out and at the end of it all I couldn't tip him!!

It's crazy that I can PAY for the service on my credit card but I can't TIP on it. They didn't have any signs up that said that either so how was I to know? I usually have cash on me but tonight - I'm broke!

Has this ever happened to anyone and what did you do to resolve it??

That is so strange!! At my salon our credit card slips have a blank just for tips.
I am confused...I do not see any reason why the tip could not be added unless she swiped the card and entered the total before she had you sign and add the tip? Her mistake not the poor guy's.

Hey susieq, don't beat yourself up over it.

I can tell you from personal experience it happens.

I forgot my wallet once when when I was running late for an appointment. I didn't know until it was time to pay. No cash, No cards, No collateral. Now, that was embarrassing. I apologized profusely. They took it all in stride and just told me to enjoy the day (I had my hair done for a party). I returned two days later and paid the bill + tip + 10% on top of it for good faith. ($90+18+11)

So in your case, since it's just the tip, I'd tip an extra 10% of the tip. (18+1.80/2.00)

Are you a regular there or was this your first time?

Ah okay - I'm a regular there for getting my hair cut. Most of the people there know me and we are all really friendly so it's not like I was sketchy!!

I asked BEFORE the girl ran the card to add the tip...that's when she said she couldn't. I know that by putting a tip on a card it means that the person who gets the tip needs to wait 2-3 days for the tip to actually be in their hands - but isn't it better than what happened to me and not getting a tip?!?

I have to leave for Vegas but when I get back I'll stop by and apologize with a tip. I think also usually I do have cash on me for those services but originally I went there last night just thinking it was a free consultation - only then to find out he had room to squeeze me in. So maybe he'll understand.

Well... I usually carry and pay with cash when I go to the Salon. But I do remember one, paying with a debit card... and the slip asked how much tip I wanted to leave....

Well, if you are a regular there... and you told the cashier you'd be back, then they should be expecting you, right??! Don't feel like a jerk...

The fact that the salon does not allow you to tip with a card is ABSURD! As long as you compensate him laterm yoiu're totally fine. I'm sure that does happen all the time considering their no card tip policy. I'm blown away!

I have to tell you all I went to a new salon for the first time this week myself... but didn't have the same success. I have super curly hair, which tends to be forgiving... but the right side of my hair is about an inch shorter than my left. Now I need to crawl back to my real stylist for a quick fix.

I stopped her in the middle of styling my hair because I could tell it was all wrong.

I went to a different salon than normal the other day just to pick up shampoo and I noticed a sign saying you can't tip stylists with a card. I had read this post and replied to it prior to seeing this sign. I asked the gal at the desk about it and she said the stylists got together and voted to have it that way. I asked her if the stylists run in to problems with people only having cards... she said all the time! She said some people run to an ATM, but most just walk away saying they'll be back or send something... but don't. It makes it more unbelievable to me that a stylist would vote to likely not get a tip!

the stylists voted that way probably because if you put a tip on a credit card - they won't receive it until like 3 days later and there is a 3% deduction from it (the credit card's fee). it makes SOME sense but it also puts their clients in really crappy positions if there are no blatant signs.

i figured what i'll do is when i go back for a trim i'll bring the extra tip money to give to him directly instead of just dropping it off.

That has happened to me before. I felt horrible! I went back the next day and took the tip. I for one hardly ever carry more than $20 with me.
