Default Why is cell phone service so expensive?

Okay... this is going to sound bad coming from someone who spends her money on bags and whatnot. Well... since both me and my husband are taking classes this year... at different schools... we thought it would be a good idea to get cell phones again so we can keep better tabs on each other. We had a cell phone awhile back, but we got rid of it because it seemed like such a waste of money (plan was horrible).
So anyway, we're out scouting today and we kept running into the same thing. If we both want to have cell phones, its going to cost us at least $70 a month for the both of us. Now we are really only going to be calling each other for the most part... its seems a bit extreme to pay $70 a month and we're hardly even using the phones.
So... what should we do? Any ideas? I'm sorry... but we're both going to be struggling students here now and we just can't afford $70 a month for cell phones. We might want to eat sometime...

I can just hear you guys now... lol! Someone who isn't constantly on the phone... well, we just didn't use the one we had before very much. None of our parents have cell phones either. My brother and his brother both do... but, you know, I don't talk to my brother all that often. Hmm... not too many friends to talk to... everyone couldn't wait to get out of here and it seems like everyone has left town... gosh, now I'm feeling lonely. I won't have much time to make friends at school... I have to work when I'm not in class. But I'm finding I don't have much in common with my classmates anyway since they are all like 8 years younger than me.

I thought about those prepaid phones at Target. They go through Nex10. You just buy minutes that come in blocks that are equal to 10 cents a minute. No access fees or anything like that. I think that would be pretty cheap if we were only using it to call each other and say "Hey, where are you? Want to meet here?". You have to buy more minutes every so often... like if you buy 300 minutes you have to buy more after 2 months to keep your phone active. Then the minutes roll over. So if we're only using them for that... wouldn't it end up being like $14 a month per phone?

I saw that Sprint has a lot of discount programs for businesses (the business buys this large block plan and then their employees can get a discounted rate). Well I was searching online and somewhere it said that if you are a student, then you might be able to get a discount using your school's plan. It said that if you were a student, then you were considered an "employee" of that school. Soooo... I went to the Sprint website and it has a place to enter your business e-mail address to see if there is a discount for your company. I entered in my university-issued e-mail address... and it worked! It says I can get a 14% discount!

Anyone ever heard of this?

Okay... we went down the the Sprint store to make sure I could get the discount. I can! So... for $51.99 a month (that's with the discount) I can get 550 anytime minutes, unlimited nights/weekends (starting a 7pm), unlimited mobile to mobile (my husband and I can call each other for free), unlimited roaming... and this is for 2 phone lines. Plus we get free caller id, voicemail, etc etc. Oh... and the girl said she would waive the activation fees.

So... we just need to decide on the phones. The girl their said that she could match any price that the competitors have as long as the Sprint store had the model.
My husband wants a Razor... we can get the old model for free (I think a new one will begin selling tomorrow). Problem is... I've been hearing some bad things about those phones. People seem fine with them for the first few months or so... and then all of the sudden they start having problems (like the battery won't hold a charge or the keypad mysteriously doesn't work). Hmm... Anyone have one?

I only use my cell phone for emergencies, and bought a Motorola Tracphone since I knew I didn't need a lot of usage on the cell. The minutes NEVER expire, and you can buy double minute cards that double every card you buy for 1 to 2 years. My daughter things I'm bizarre because it took me 9 months to use my first 400 minutes. My second 400 minute card got doubled to 800 minutes, and it has been 2.5 months since I got it, and I still have just under 700 minutes left on the phone. : ) Low usage and no need for photos, games and funky ringtones helps me save a FORTUNE and still have emergency coverage for those "I'm running late" or "what do we need at the store" calls everyone needs from time to time.
