Default How do you tell a bag's quality?

What determines the quality of a handbag? The leather feel? The stitching? The heavy hardware? Or the overall craftmanship? I wonder what makes a handbag feel like a real expensive good quality one?

For example, I fell in love with Marc Jacob's Stam bag from a picture in a magazine. I went to the store to find it. However, after feeling the bag, which was somewhat stiff and not soft as I imagined it to be I was awful disappointed. Not to mention with the chain that bag itself probably weights 5 pound. I just couldn't bare to spend $1,200 on a bag that I'm iffy about the quality.

    Any advice?

quality is hard to look for (that is unless the brand is known for that) ive heard d&G are not the best quality leathergood and bogs, but that isnt really their forte so i wouldnt buy them anyway. I sometimes find it hard to distinguish leather these days, ive heard that perfumes are even applied to bags to smell like leather, the only real way for finding out is to burn it, an di am not destroying my bags to see if they are leather! but yeah it can be hard at times

I agree. The feel of soft leather is wonderful and the smell.
