    Default do doctors know best?

I rarely go to the doctors.
Suck-ily, just out of the luck of the draw (i guess) i get sick easily, like 9 times per year. well. yesterday I went to the doctor because I have been coughing for the last 3 weeks, and i have no idea why (i feel fine, just a cough)
-- and he told me i most likely have acid reflex disease but if i dont i have allergies (uuuuuhmmm ?). He prescribe medication for both, but how am i suppose to know which works gosh darn it?

What's worse is that i told him i have a bad reaction to codine (b-a-d, like i almost died when i had it last) yet he prescribed it to me. (double uhm)

No... doctors don't always know best. I would say to get a second opinion.

Doctors DO NOT know best. I'm a huge health person... and doctors are horrible. Everytime they prescribe you a medicine... they make money. I'm BIG on herbs.. I never see a doctor. Everytime you take a medication, read the side effects... medications made you worse. Therefore you have to go back to the doctor and get a NEW medication for your new problem. It's a never-ending cycle so they can make more and more money. For instance... everyone is hooked on antibiotics. Most people especially woman don't realize antibiotics take all the GOOD and BAD bacteria out of our body. Woman need good bacteria in their bodies so they do not get yeast infections, ovarian cysts, etc. Antibiotics cause all these problems. They are then forced to go back to the doctor to get another medication. Doctors and Hospitals are HORRIBLE.

Plus your doctor said coughing could be acid reflux. LOL... my dad has acid reflux. Does your doctor know what acid reflux is? If you had acid reflux you would feel your throat burning in the morning when you wake up and you would start spitting up a liquid... which is the acid. It happens to my dad every morning... and he is on medication for it. I'm trying to get him off of it and turn to an herb.

I'm not sure what is a good herb for a cough... you would have to go to whole foods and ask... but I know to numb your throat you would get the spray Singers Grace and the tablets Slippery Elm. I have to do both on a regular basis because of me singing constantly. Slippery Elm repairs anything that may be wrong with the throat.

If you are big on doctors.... I would say get a 2nd opinion.

^^^ Just be careful with herbs... they CAN interact with one another and with prescription drugs.
My grandma's husband is HUGE on herbal remedies. Problem is... he doesn't take anything into consideration as far as dosage or whether it will interact with something. He was forcing my grandma to take 3000mg of pure calcium carbonate every day for YEARS! They say that excess calcium will just pass out of your body... but you can also get calcium deposits if you not taking magnesium and other minerals along with the calcium. Which is what happened to her... she had to have new heart valves put in because hers were so calcified that her heart wasn't able to function properly. The doctor had never in all his career seen anything like it and boy did he have a hard time getting her heart values out to replace them.
Sorry... rambling. Oh... and don't take St Johns Wort if you're taking birth control pills. That herb makes the bc not work!!!

I only take herbs when I need them. Every singer takes Singer's Grace and Silppery Elm.. it saves us. LOL... lately I've been taking them alot because I have a big show coming up... but usually only take them when I really need them.

I love herbs... never have had a problem with that. I agree with the calcium though. That's WAY to much calcium intake a day. It's like everything else... too much of anything is a bad thing.

Birth Control is bad period... woman don't know the side effects it can do. It's a very bad pill... and doctors neglect to tell patients the REAL side effects. It effects women differently but some women's bodies just can't handle that pill. I know someone who went on birth control and she stopped taking it. Now she can't even get her period anymore. Another person I know... stopped taking the pill... and now she only gets her period once in a while. Some women it doesn't effect at all. Horrible pill... any hormone you put into your body can do damage.

I don't know... just my strong beliefs about doctors and medicines! I don't agree with them AT ALL. Just my opinion! Hope I didnt upset anyone!! Hope you are getting better Jennifer!

No one is mad Marissa... I agree, BC can do bad things to your body. That was just an interaction that I thought of... that apparently has surprised some people!

That happened to me too... I only get it like once every 2 months and it's at random times! And I'm too scared to get on the shot because both of my older sisters have had problems with getting pregnant ..

Uhm, yeah. I'm not going to take any of the medication he prescribed me. The codeine was suppose to just suppress my cough and relieve the pain. But after reading the side effects it brought back bad memories ... closing of your throat, slow-weak breathing, weakness, dizziness, unconsciousness.
That's worse than I feel now. I think I'm better off not taking it.

Yikes.. I'm sorry Jennifer!! My doctor wanted me to go on BC and I refused! I get ovarian cysts... so every month is random for me. She kept insisting... I kept saying no.. and she still filled out a prescription. Lots of girls see the pro's of BC... but they don't realize it's a foreign hormone they are putting in your body. Every girl will react to it differently. It's also linked to having cancer in the future. Horrible pill....

Marissa... I guess I shouldn't tell you that I have to take BC pills all the time now. Since my stupid pituitary tumor has my hormones all messed up... I don't have my period anyway... like, ever. I have hot flashes, my hair falls out, I feel tired all the time. The doctor wanted me to take hormones like what menopausal women take and I told them no. So they make me take BC pills instead. I feel much better though... it keeps my symptoms from coming back.

I hope in the future it doesn't make you worse. BC is a hormone... but I guess it's better to take one pill than a bunch right? I'm sorry to hear you have all those problems! I know the feeling... I come from a family with VERY bad genes! I hope you get better!

4 weeks today... well i feel pretty much fine throughout the day, but as the evening goes on i just start coughing. its really deep in my throat, like the bottom of my trachea. when i cough everyone says it sounds more like a sneeze or something. also sometimes when i breath out its like the air gets sucked out of my chest, like a pant. Also a couple times it feels like when i swallow something, it doesn't go down. like its stuck.

Other than all that I feel super.
