    Arrow Travel - Hawaii

(carrying over from the Mod team room because why not, jump in if you've been or plan to travel to Hawaii!)

I still have never been to the Big Island, although it is on my bucket list. Dan and I are going through a love for Hawaii phase, which I am all about. For years we would go to Mexico once or twice a year, but recently we discovered how beautiful Hawaii was. Also it's so close... direct flight on Hawaiian airlines is so amazing.

@boysRsmelly What were your favorite places in Ohau? Where did you visit / stay?

@VivaLaJuicy what Island are you going to?

Jennifer - We stayed at a hotel on Waikiki Beach. It's called the Outrigger. The back of the hotel literally exits out onto the beach. It wasn't a bad hotel. It seemed more upbeat and geared toward younger people. They had a bar area downstairs where they had live bands playing.

We went to the Polynesian Culture Center while we were there. It was pretty fun, great show, but I will warn you that the "luau" is a buffet line and people sitting at banquet tables with chairs. It was indoors.

Aloha Tower is a nice place with small shops, if you want to get away from all the horrors of the International Market Place and don't want to go to the mall.

Pearl Harbor is a must for the history buff. A ferry boat takes you over to the memorial.

I found that most of the restaurants were a lot more commercialized there than on the Big Island. They even had a Planet Hollywood. LOL! The Big Island had a huge local artist community, so there were so many more unique places to find handcrafted items. I was disappointed when we went to Oahu in that respect.

If you can rent a car for a couple of days, it's totally worth the hassle of finding parking. Oahu was difficult to navigate without a car. We had to catch a Hilo Hattie trolley just to get to the Aloha Tower. The driver was so nice and dropped us off there for free. We couldn't find a regular bus to save our lives!

Going to O'ahu next month to celebrate our three year anniversary- I'm stoked!
We'll be on the island for 9 days, 8 nights and although we discussed island hopping, we've pretty much packed a hefty itinerary all over O'ahu. We booked our stay at the Sheraton on Waikiki because of their amazing infinity pool. We will also be checking into Aulani, Disney's Hawaiian resort for one day/night while on the Kapolei/Ko Olina area. We got a car rental for four days to explore North Shore, Manoa falls, Pali lookout, Waimea bay; we also have a few excursions at Kualoa ranch. We have a few hikes planned and of course, snorkeling excursions. Pearl Harbor and Aloha Tower/China Town are on the itinerary as well- we also like farmers markets and we've mapped out a couple of those as well. My only concern is the 8.5Hr direct flight from Houston to Honolulu- that'll be the longest flight I've ever sat through.

LOL, you'll have to post pictures of stuff you find in the International Marketplace! Absolutely hilarious! And perverted. Very perverted...

I'm glad you're getting a car to go exploring the rest of the island. It's impossible to get to some places without one. My in-laws and travel agent both insisted that we didn't need a car when we went there. We didn't rent one and it was a huge mistake. We couldn't get anywhere we wanted to go. The only problem is parking (expensive). But if you're not attempting to park in downtown Honolulu, I don't think it's as big of a problem. Most hotels have their own parking/garages.

@VivaLaJuicy you totally mentioned all of my favorite places! When we went to O'ahu we stayed at our friends parents house which was such a great experience. He grew up on the island so was able to give us tips to all the great beaches. I thought Waimanalo Bay Beach was so beautiful, surprising that it was not packed. Definitely not as packed as Sandy Beach or Waikiki. One thing I would recommend doing is getting a cooler and stopping off at FoodMart- they have the BEST selection of Poke! Especially for your road trip days.

8.5 hours is a long time, but it's totally worth it! What airlines are you flying? Remember, you're going to gain 5 hours when you get there!!

LOL! Jennifer, let's just say there are lot's of things with male anatomy on them. Gag-type novelties, I guess you would call them. My favorite was the little man in a barrel and when you lifted the barrel up there was a little surprise.

Okay, I'll stop talking now. LOL

Oh gosh- and Jennifer's right, for such a touristy place / "family friendly", that's a surprise. Although the original International Marketplace is not there anymore, they turned it into a huge shopping center that opened this year. See attached article. So perhaps I'll miss out on the gag gifts.

@Jennifer - that's so cool that you got to experience Oahu with locals. We have so much on our agenda, I can't wait. Tomorrow, husband and I start training for our planned hike at Koko Crater Trail... We'll be hitting that incline on our treadmill effective tomorrow! Did you do any hikes in Oahu Jennifer?

We are flying through United Airlines. How long are your direct flights to Hawaii?

Yea, I saw that. Online a couple sources said the market closed in 2014 - is that when you were there BRS? I was there February 2015 and there was a market, right across the street from Dukes, but it was the usual street fare vendors.

Koko Crater Trail - We missed that trail! Would love to see your photos!!

I love Hawaiian airlines! The seats are bigger, more comfortable, and they have better food/drinks.. it's only about a 6 hour flight from Seattle, however flights are painful. I don't usually do well on flights, especially long distances. I get really claustrophobic and anxious. It's not fun for me, or anyone I'm traveling with, or sitting next to. lol.

I was there before then. Wow, LOL! That's good there is something else there now. Seriously, it was like every other vendor cart had novelties of this "type".

Cool Jennifer! Make sure to go to the Polynesian Culture Center. I would recommend NOT getting a tour. They hustle you along so quickly and I really prefer to explore on my own, KWIM? Also, the show is AMAZING, but the so-called luau is a bit of a disappointment. It's a buffet... inside... at banquet tables. The show is worth it though.
