Default So what really happens if you skip jury duty?

We shall see! Of all mornings that I chose to sleep in, it turns out that I had jury duty. I even tried googling it to find out what the penalty is in my state and didn't really find anything. I wonder if they'll call

Were you actually asked to come to court? Usually you wait until your term and then they will call you during that time period to ask you to come in. If you are asked to come in or you avoid their phone calls when they are trying to call you in, then you can be held in contempt. They can fine you for that, but I'm not sure how much the fine would be. Maybe it depends on how pissed the judge is.

I'm not sure. I didn't get a phone call, just received this "Jury Summons" letter in the mail. It said my first day starts today, July 9 @ 8 am and it had my badge and juror #.

Oh sh*t, now I'm a little scared.. just noticed on the letter in bright red it says "It is a crime for any person summoned for jury duty to intentionally fail to appear as directed (RCW 2.36.170)" Looked that up and it says "A person summoned for jury service who intentionally fails to appear as directed shall be guilty of a misdemeanor."

Yeah, it's a misdemeanor. But if is unintentional, you can try to correct the situation by letting them know what happened. So you were supposed to actually show up at the court house today? And this is the first day of your two week term? Huh, they do it differently there. Here you get a letter in the mail that says when your term is. You fill out this form that needs to be mailed back. Then you wait until your term and they can call you at any time during that two week term. If they call and ask you to come, then you are supposed to go to the courthouse. If they don't call, then they don't call and you don't have to do anything. Failure to respond to the summons (i.e. mail back the form) or come to the courthouse if called during your term is a punishable offense. Things must be different where you are. But even if you were just supposed to show up today, I'm sure you can explain to them that it was simply a misunderstanding and you fully intended to go.

Yea that sounds a little different. Here they send out the summons letter to a handful of people, they all show up at the courthouse on that day then some are chosen to stay on for the case and the others can leave.

I just hope sleeping in is a good enough excuse.... 8 AM! It's an hour walk from here too so I would have had to leave really early.

Sounds like you should just call them up and tell them what happened. I think if you explain it wasn't intentional then they will go easy on you.

Here, they fine you if you don't show up without 'fighting' the summons or just not showing up. It's pretty easy to get out of a summons here; my dad managed to skip out on a full-day of selection as he's self-employed; my cousin who's a nurse used that as an excuse. Friends who have just graduated claimed they had applied to grad school or Summer courses and therefore, couldn't miss school/class to sit on a trial (they didn't.)
anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.
