When you say depression, do you really mean depression or do you just mean you don't feel like doing anything?

I have suffered with depression since high school. It cycles, getting better and worse. When it gets bad, I just have to keep pushing forward until it passes. Otherwise I will get stuck going downward and sometimes I fear I won't be able to get back out. No coffee or tea is going to fix it.

I have suffered with chronic depression for many years, and have been on various anti-depressants! I'm pre-menopausal now, so that makes it worse at times. I can sympathize with those feelings as I feel them off and on. I would advise consulting a doctor or psychiatrist.

A psychiatrist would bring you major help.
But if you ask me, the best help you can get lies within, it all comes from your way of thinking. Positive energy => positive results, it always applies. We are our thoughts, and every time your negative side comes out to dominate, remember, things will always be the way you think of them. Feelin blue? Your day will be blue. Switch to optimism, change your way of thinking and your life will turn upside down instantly

I find it irritating when people say you can cure your depression by simply thinking positively. It just doesn't work that way. I do find that talk therapy helps, but the effects are usually just temporary.

Of course you can cure that by bein positive. The fact that you`re goin through a depression is your fault, as an individual. I don`t say that in a mean way. Depression can come from all sorts of things. But it`s up to you and only you how you let it affect you mentally. If depression gets you, it`s your fault, you weren`t strong enough. I`ve been through a bad ass depression myself. My psychiatrist was one of the best at that time and the first thing he started changing about myself was my way of thinking.
So believe me, it is up to YOU

Suffering from depression is not the fault of the individual. It is a real medical condition, but there are plenty of quacks out there that will tell you otherwise. Research has shown that genetics can play a role and it involves a chemical imbalance in the brain. You can think positively, but that doesn't mean you're not still suffering from depression. Yes, you can get help and, yes, you can treat the condition. Saying it is the person's fault though is very belittling.

I totally agree. Having a little knowledge is dangerous and worse than being totally ignorant and this is just one example of it. It is like saying, if you wish away cancer with all sincerity, it will go away.

Nobody chooses to be depressed. No one willfully looks to be down, sad and dejected all the time. Only a moron would look at it that way.
Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and several other factors trigger it. Thinking positive is good for anyone (not just the depressed). It is a philosophy for life, not a cure.

    Wink Re: DEPRESSION

I didn`t mean to be harsh and maybe I got myself carried away with all the positive thinking. I`m sure there are scientific depths according to depression`s level. But, positive thoughts always help, it is a must one must think appropriately

    Hey everyone...

Having gone through some major stuff over the past six months, I can say that depression REALLY stinks. No one chooses to become depressed, and believe me its hard to get out of it once it sets in.

I think eating healthy, getting enough sleep and exercising do help...along with other tips everyone else has mentioned. A good doctor can prescribe the correct medication, but personally...this is just from my perspective...living a healthy lifestyle (food/activity) played a vital role in my recovery.

Got depression? Want a cure?...Talk to GUY. Ill make you feel all better with horrible jokes thatll make no sense.

Seriously though, I think we all go through a down spell. Ive came close to ending it all quite a few times. I dissagree that deprssion is One's fault though. The brain is a funny thing, Alot of times I believe that there's some type of imbalances and the person may need professional help and put on meds. SOmetimes, you just cant beat it on your own no matter how hard you try.

I really get aggravated when people try to tell you the whole "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" approach works. It doesn't! I've been on anti-depressants for years. Depression is a real medical condition. Believe me, if I thought the power of positive thinking worked, I would be trying it constantly. Women tend to be more susceptible because of our physical makeup, but I've met many men who are chronically depressed as well. The funny thing is that people who don't suffer from the condition are the ones who are constantly giving wrong and false advice. I would suggest they do a little reading and talk to people who suffer with it before they make assumptions. I do believe there is a genetic link, because both my aunt and grandfather suffered from bipolar illness. I would hope at some point that the stigma associated with it would become less, but unfortunately it still exists today.

Really sorry to know your feeling depressed. I can understand and relate to what you are saying, I was and have been depressed for a couple years, I've gone from really high highs to extereme lows. It's so easy for people to say think positive, but sometimes you need time... time is a healer (jeez thats cheesy) but sometimes you need time to just process before the healing begins. I'd suggest being around people who are positive, and who may have been through simillar stuff cause then you will have someone to speak to if you feel low. I'd defo go to the docs, and speak to them about it. Although initially when I went and spoke to my doc, she simply suggested joining ''support'' groups etc.
