I'm sorry!! Hopefully as the program goes on...people won't be so un-friendly! I hope it gets better for ya. We're all here to talk to - remember that!

    Thanks girls.

OMG, how freaking pathetic am I? I really do feel pathetic! I can't believe this! Do you think the whole me getting a bad feeling from the mentor/professor guy just completely threw me off? It's like I can't do anything now!

Aw, I'm sorry the first day didn't go very well! It might not be so bad once you get settled into your lab, as you probably won't be seeing the other people in the program as much, just the people in your lab.

Don't let the weird feeling you get from your mentor freak you out...will you be primarily working with the graduate student? As he's closer in age to you, maybe it will be easier to get to know him as the summer goes on. Is there anyone else in the lab, or is it just you and the grad student?

Pingping - I'm not working with this grad student, but he will be around in the lab since that is where he is doing his research. At the moment, it is just him and me there. But apparently this professor is bringing back a group of grad students from wherever it was he took off to for 2 weeks (he left to country, but I'm not sure exactly where he went) to work on his project as well.

So today was different. I don't think it was necessarily better different. I spent the afternoon weighing out a zillion different chemicals to make medium for bacteria cultures that will be grown later on. I began to realize just how long it had been since I took a chemistry class, since I couldn't even remember to simplest of molecular formulas.

I want to say something to the lady in charge of the program, but I don't want to come off as an ungrateful complain-y butt. I was talking to this grad student and he finally told me about his work and then he explained what my project is. He admitted that their work had absolutely nothing to do with bioenergy and that the project they had picked out for me was an extremely far stretch for you to relate it to bioenergy in some way. I applied for this program because I thought bioenergy was an interesting topic... but now it turns out my research will basically be microbiology-related. It's very upsetting really because it just doesn't have anything to do with the types of things I'm interested in -- environmental studies. The grad student also assumed I had taken a microbiology class. When I told him I hadn't and I really didn't have any clue about the stuff he was talking about he sorta started laughing and said "uh oh". It was like he thought it was funny, this mess they had gotten themselves into with having me there. Don't get me wrong, I could see that he was trying to be very nice and helpful to me. But I think he was expecting to have someone with a lot more experience there since he had his own stuff he needed to be doing. And I'm still confused as heck as to what exactly I will be doing and I'm afraid I'm still not going to get any answers once the professor returns. Gosh... I just feel like I was cheated here. Does this mean the lady in charge will think I'm not a team player or a good candidate for grad school? I want to attend grad school, but I'm doubting I would want to do something like this.

I would talk to the lady in charge and let her know your concerns about the area your research project is in. They probably can't do anything about it since the program has already started, but I would at least talk to her about it. And no, I don't think she would think you're wining. She's got to understand how important this is to your future.

I haven't spoken to anyone about my concerns yet. I got an explanation of what my project would all entail today, so I decided to hold off a bit and see where things go. I am still disappointed with the whole thing though, but the stuff I'll be doing will be stuff that I have done before. Well, a lot of it will be anyway. I really need to look back at the stuff from my classes so I can remember all the whos, whats, whys, and hows. It is all vaguely familiar. I "helped" another person with his project today, although I don't know exactly how helpful I was being. But he is nice and he was helping me... and, unfortunately, quizzing me. He was basically forcing me to remember things and I got to practice using some of the lab equipment. Things were better today, but I still feel awkward and weird about everything.

I agree. Setting the base for your grad studies is important. if your primary goal is environmental studies and not microbiology, you should talk to the program incharge.
Depending upon the funding they may be able to transfer you to another department with a focus on bioenergy. Does your Univ have a Planning and or agricultural studies department? that would be the place to go to.

    good Luck

^^^ There is an agricultural studies department, but it is on a different campus. The Bioenergy project is part of the Plant Sciences division which is in this building that I am in. I was listening to what the other mentors were saying about their projects and it all sounded Bioenergy-related to me... some of it even sounded pretty interesting. I was jealous of the students that were paired with these other mentors. :sigh: The problem is that each mentor has one student, so I doubt someone would want a second student and the other student probably wouldn't appreciate me being added in with them.

What exactly are you studying bRs? I'm kinda out of the loop here. I'm sorry to hear about all the trouble you've been having, i hope things get better. I agree with everyone else, you should ask him where he's from, in my experience people are usually flattered that you want to know more about them and they typically seem to enjoy taking about their home country with somone, and you can hear some very interesting stories.

Oh, sorry, that was probably in another thread. This is a summer research program that I had to apply for. The portion of the program I applied for was the Bioenergy project. There are 10 students that are paired with 10 mentors and we each have our own little research projects that are all related to biofuels in some way. I was interested in the program because I'm minoring in environmental studies and I wanted some more lab-based research experience in the area (I have field-research experience). My mentor works mainly with metals and bacteria. He had to stretch things to make a bioenergy project for the program. I'll be working with metals and bacteria as well, but somehow distantly relating it to those working with algae in biofuel production.

I'm sorry that things are still awkward! Hopefully you'll be able to settle into the lab after a bit. That is unfortunate though that the project you've been given isn't really what you expected, and it sounds like it doesn't really fit what the program is about. I think you have good reason to talk to the program director about your project concerns, as you came there as part of a specific program that was supposed to do with Bioenergy, and the project you've been given doesn't fit that criteria. Hopefully she'll be able to move you to a different lab that has a better focus?

^^^ Yeah, I'll probably talk to her about it. But I doubt they would move me to a different lab. I'm okay working with these guys, well, for the most part anyway. I know what the project all entails and everything. It's not like I can't do it or anything. Like I said, I'm just disappointed. I'm sure I'll get used to doing things eventually, it's just so weird. It's almost like a new job and you have no clue where anything is or how to do anything. I'm just afraid now that I'll get used to things and then he'll return from where ever it was that he went and then things will change. LOL!
