Poor you, but I think you did the right thing for him.
I think if you can be there and calm then the vet should always let you. If you are having difficulty controlling your emotions then don't do it, as your pet will pick up on it. I had my little cat pts at home, my friend suggested that I burn Frankinsense before the vet came and it would calm both of us, and, well, something worked. If I'd started to feel really emotional though I'd have probably gone out of the room.
I think that it is great that you had your last cuddles together, and your little kitty was obviously not afraid at the end, so please just hold on to the good memories.

My vet in LA made housecalls for euthanizing. I loved that. It was such a calmer and more serene parting. Although I love our vet now. They have a special room and it is very calm and soothing.

I could have stayed with him if I really wanted to, but at that point I was absolutely hysterical (So thank you, Crystal, for saying what you did). They are a very small vet clinic and there really wasn't anywhere to go to sit. We took him out to the car to cuddle him and say goodbye since the waiting room had two big dobermans in it. I guess what made it so hard was that he wasn't lying there, hanging onto by a thread. He was awake and he was cuddling with me and purring and drooling all over everything like he always did when he was happy. I am not angry with the vet, I think she did the right thing by taking him from me. I probably would have had a nervous breakdown right there, to be honest. I have this very overwhelming feeling of guilt right now and Mr BRS just doesn't understand. I feel like we should have just brought him home. But I knew we couldn't, it would have just made things that much harder.

Thanks again to everyone. I really do appreciate it. I'm probably going to feel terrible about it for awhile yet. His litter box is still downstairs, I haven't been able to bring myself to throw out his poo yet. Oh gosh, is that weird? LOL! I hope not! But his food dish still has some food in it too and his toys are still on the floor where he had left them. So I guess it's not all that weird.

I'm so sorry, bRs. I know exactly how you feel. When we had to put my boxer to sleep, he was wiggling and wagging his tail before he went into the car. It broke my heart...but I'd rather have him be in better place than be very ill like he was. I cried for days, he was the best dog I've ever had.

It's going to take time, but you'll be okay.

bRs, oh sweetie, I'm so sorry for your loss. I agree, you did do the right thing. An I know you might not want to hear these things right now, but the process of euthanasia is painless and fast, that's why the say "put to sleep". The sodium phenobarbital has been used to prep animals for surgery in the right dose and for euthanasia. He didn't feel a thing.

And Mavey, what are you thinking? I don't want to Debbie Downer bRs any more than she is, but what the hell are you saying "get a new vet" because she wasn't allowed in the room for the process. OMG. Sounds to me like she opted to not be. And I have full understanding of that. Jesus Crimeny, I was a euthanasia tech and the LAST thing you want is for your "baby" to feel your uptighness and stress while going through the process. Your warm cuddly side needs some work.

It will take time so don't beat yourself up over it. You did the right thing for your kitty.
I know that there is no way I could have went into the room, I would have stressed and caused him to panic.

    We love ya bRs!!

It is going to take time BrS, but you did do the right thing. I was completely
devastated when we had to put our kitty down, and I also chose not to go be in the room,
because I was crying uncontrollably. Don't beat yourself up over it, you did do the right thing.

I am sooo sorry to hear about your kitty BRS. I had a similar situation like this happen to a kitty of mine a few years ago. She got cancer ( a tumor) and she had gone through 2 surgeries. The first time it was removed it came back and then again on the second time , it came back. I had contacted Cancer Specialist Vets (by request of my regular Vet group ) and they claimed there was nothing that could be done for her. I had to put her to SLEEP and I felt sooo awful about it. 2 hours after I put her to sleep I got a phone call from my mother who found a kitten under a truck in her parking lot at work. She asked if I wanted it. I hemmed and hawed .... nooooo it isn't fair to Kirby , but she ended up bringing it to my house after work and now Darby is king of the house !!!! Hang in there ... don't feel guilty ... I am sure your kitty is in kitty heaven hanging out with my Kirby !!

I am sorry about your loss. It must have been so hard to make that type of decision. My cousin had to put one of her dogs down because of a tumor too, it was heartbreaking. ((Hugs))

PS. I had a dog once. It was a gift from my Grandma when I turn 16. I loved her to death and she became very, very ill. We tried everything and we did not want to put her down. I always regret not doing so. She deserved better but we were to selfish to let her go. You did the right thing.

I'm sure I posted a picture before, but here he is if you want to see him.
Such a silly cat, apparently the rung of the chair was a good chin rest.

Thanks! He was a fine looking cat. I would get compliments at the vet's office... but mostly because people were surprised by how big he was. He weighed about 15 lbs and he was very tall and lean. Nice stripe pattern too.
