Default Is anyone good at writing resumes and personal statements?

I'm needing some help with mine for the research program I will be applying for. These things need to be submitted via web form, so it said write it in plain text with no modifications such as bold/italic, centering, size changes, etc. I didn't know if this meant tabs as well... since most resumes utilize tabs. Does anyone know how it should be formatted then? It says its only supposed to be a page in length, so would I have it like this:

    Education
    Date - Date
    Name of School/Degree Obtained

    Date - Date
    Name of School/Degree Obtained

    And so on.
And would this be all that I include about education, or should I have a paragraph beneath the name of the school describing things like GPA, organizations, etc etc. Also, if I'm submitting a personal statement, does my resume need an objective? This is so hard to figure out...

Since they told you to put your resume in plain text with no formatting, I wouldn't tab anything either. I would definitely include a paragraph under each school with information including your GPA, any awards or honors you received, organizations, etc.

I don't know if your resume should include an objective. I suppose since this is for a very specific purpose you should include one.

Hope I was able to help a little. I remember when I was applying for law school, I had to write a ton of personal statements and essays, and it sucked!

Thanks! I think I will include an objective, but I'll keep it brief since there will be a personal statement as well. I found a program on my school's website that takes you through step by step. It even tells you which sections are appropriate for the kind of resume you're writing.

Here is the format it gave me:

    OBJECTIVE

    EDUCATION
    Name of School, City, State
Bachelor of Arts, Biology, Graduation Date
    Minor
    Overall GPA

    Name of School, City, State
    Associate of Applied Science
    GPA

    RELEVANT COURSEWORK
    • Chemistry (X hours): Name of Class, Name of Class
    • Biology (X hours): Name of Class, Name of Class, Name of Class, Name of Class
    • Natural Sciences (X hours): Name of Class
    • Sociology (X hours): Name of Class
    • Physics (X hours): Name of Class

    RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

    OTHER EXPERIENCE

    HONORS AND AWARDS

    ACTIVITIES
So do you think this is appropriate?

No problem! That's cool that your school offers your some guidance, that should help make things a little easier for you. I think the format they give you is very appropriate.

    Good luck!

Yeah, I just now discovered it while I was looking for the career center's office hours. It's actually a nice program because it even gives you examples of different things to give you ideas on what to write.

So do you think the Relevant Coursework should include the names of the classes? Is that like overkill? The other way of doing it is like this:

    Chemistry (X hours)
    Biology (X hours)
But the way I see it, how would they know if the classes you took are really relevant or not unless you named the classes. I mean, this format doesn't really tell you much other than you had X number of hours in Biology... meaning it could be anything. Sorry if this is a stupid question, I'm just so nervous that I going to do something wrong.

I think you need to include the names of the classes. You're right, just saying "Chemistry" doesn't tell them what area and whether it's relevant or not. It may seem like overkill, but I think you need to give them as much info as you can. And no, it's not a stupid question! I totally understand wanting to get this absolutely perfect.

Of course I want it perfect! LOL! I'm worried bad enough as it is about not getting in, so I feel I need to stress over the resume and stuff even more. Thanks for your input! I'll keep working on it over the next couple of days. If I have more questions, I'll just post them on here.

Oh, BTW, I do have to submit my transcript to them as well. So I guess they could look at what classes I took there. But this would be a quicker reference for them, right? LOL!

I learned about this in one of my journalism classes.... my professor told us to use the Resume wizard on microsoft word! It's kinda awesome because they pretty much set it all up for you... you just fill in the blanks!

Yeah, the program I'm using is sort of like that. It's called Optimal Resume.

I found it on my school website. You can even select what kind of resume you want to write, like if you are writing one for an internship or a specific job position. Then it gives you the different sections to fill out that would be considered useful for that type of resume. Plus it gives you examples and ideas, just in case you get stuck on some of the wordy parts (e.g. the objective).

I have another question, I hope you guys will know. I'm still struggling with my personal statement. I need to say why I want to participate, how it will help me achieve future academic goals, and relevant experiences in an academic setting I may have had. I have everything pretty much worked out... I'm still working out the kinks of the relevant experiences part. It's hard because it needs to be compelling, but can only be a page long. So now I'm wondering if the personal statement needs to have a defined conclusion. And if it does, what should it say?
