Sad I had a scare today...

So the BF, I & our dog, Bailey, were @ the BF's parent's house today. BF's mom was cooking in the kitchen & she was using bay leaves to season. I let Bailey outside to pee & when he came back in, naturally he smelt food & ran into the kitchen. Within a matter of seconds he grabbed a bay leaf that had apparently fell on the floor, ran under the kitchen table & ate it! I had no idea what he was eating or the fact that she was cooking with bay leaves until she said it...

Bay leaves are poisonous to dogs, especially little ones, so I panicked. I called the vet & they were closed, but the recording gave me the number for the emergency vet line in my state. I called them & I was told to call animal poison control. I got on the line with them & a recording comes up asking me to have a major cc ready because there's a $60 consultation fee. I hung up & called another vet that happened to be open. I told the girl what happened. After she talked to the vet, she told me that I had to induce vomitting with hydrogen peroxide.

Mind you, this whole time I'm in absolute panic. The lady on the phone @ the vets basically told me he had to throw up or it could be fatal. I could go into the office for a $99 emergency fee & a $42 fee to induce the vomit. She said they weren't going to do anything other than give him a tablespoon of HP, which I could do myself.

So I asked BF's dad if they had any & of course they were all out. I jumped in the car & literally ran into CVS. I came back, grabbed Bailey & a spoon & took him outside. He licked the spoonful of HP like it was nothing. I sat outside for 10 minutes with him & still nothing. I called the vet back because I wasn't sure how much HP I could give him. As I'm on hold waiting for her to speak to the vet, he throws up. I know it's nasty but there was an entire bay leaf that was swallowed whole that came up.

I was a nervous wreck today. I really thought I was going to lose my baby. He's doing okay now. He threw up a total of 4 times. I gave him dry toast for dinner & he seems okay.

Sorry for the long post... I know a lot of you girls are animal lovers & will understand my panic. I also think it's useful info to know that if your dog swallows anything poisonous, give him or her a tablespoon of HP, because I didn't know until today!!!

I'm so sorry that you had to go through all that Cassandra. I remember when our dog gave us a scare when she ate an entire package of almonds. I had been told that almonds were poisonous to dogs. When I called the emergency vet hotline though, they told me that it was just the almond pods and plant parts. So as long as it was a cleaned almond, it should be fine. It was still scary though. I'm glad your doggie is okay now. I think if he still has an upset stomach, you can feed him plain boiled chicken. Keep us updated!

OMG, how scary was that!! I'm glad everything turned out OK in the end. I didn't know bay leaves are poisonous to dogs. He needs some pampering now, I think.

Oh my goodness! I would have completely panicked! I had no idea about bay leaves, im glad you informed us about that. I am so glad that Bailey is okay and you really did handle that so well! I really think I would have just freaked! And isn't it just awful how much vets charge?! I can't stand it!

Thanks bRs, so you totally knew how I felt! When I called the emergency vet hotline they wouldn't even give me any info, they just said to call animal poison control & I would have paid money just to hear them tell me what the vet told me...

Thanks nicole! Yeah, the vet fees are so insane. I can't get over the $60 fee just to talk to someone from animal poison control!

I'm kind of appalled that they would charge $60 just for you to talk to them over the phone. The emergency vet hotline is free to use here.

^^ Yeah, it's ridiculous! If I didn't get an answer anywhere else, it would be worth it... but that was my very last resort.

Wow, I can't believe the $60 either. What if someone didn't have the $60? That would be so sad.

You poor thing. :hug:I would have been a nervous wreck. Lucky you knew about bay leaves being poisonous, and that Bailey is OK.

2 years ago, I lost my beautiful cat Oscar because he ate a few petals that had fallen on the ground from a bunch of lillies I had in the house.
Lillies are highly toxic to cats. He died from kidney failure within days of eating them.

Needless to say, I never have lillies anywhere anymore.
