    Default Cruise ships

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that it seems people are going overboard on these ships more than usual?
I know this seems weird of me to pay attention, but I'm afraid of water and stories like this freak me out.

It kind of freaks me out too. I wonder if it is getting worse or if the media is just picking up on it more.

We take a cruise every year and have never seen massive illness or someone jumping overboard. But every time we go I live with clenched hands while we are on deck, because there are so many kids that get so close to the edge and/or hang over the side. It drives me crazy that the parents don't do something about it. It's one of the reasons we haven't taken the kids with us yet. I don't want to sound like a crazy person as I keep telling my kids to stay 3 feet away from the edge. Most of the edging is high plexiglass and so you can look over without worrying about falling over, but there are areas in the front and back that are just a straight shot over. Really creep and really unsafe for smaller, active children.

According to how the media tells it, yes, I think so. But sometimes I wonder if it actually occurs more often/or less often than it is actually reported. Do you get what I'm saying?

I personally am scared to death of water in the first place, and Titanic only confirmed the fear of God in me (I know that's ridiculous/illogical).

Cruises freak me out period. My biggest fear is open water, so I have never & won't ever be on a cruise ship.

I agree with you navymom, all of these cruise related media stories freak me out too.

^^ Im with you all!!! I always make excuses to not go on a cruise ship whenever I was invited. I always fear of falling/thrown overboard and not be found. Also, the thought of being "trapped" in one place doesnt sit well with me either.

You know, I was the same way until my junior year of college. A group of us wanted to do something fabulous for spring break and everyone decided on a cruise. Everyone except me that is. I've always been terrified of sharks and drowning. And this is someone who was on swim team and a lifeguard. It's just always been an underlying fear. I even get weirded out if I'm in a bubble bath and start to think about what's in the water with me. I think it's a hold over from Jaws. That was such a terrifying movie and I was really young when I saw it.
Anyway, my mom forced me to go. I totally freaked out until I was on board and then saw the lifeboats and drills. Then I was fine. I think it just takes the first time of getting over the unknown and then it's a blast! I've gone on pretty much every line now and love Royal Caribbean. So if you ever get over your fear or want to conquer your fear, I highly recommend Royal.

I'm not afraid of the water. I simply don't like cruises because I think they are boring. Mr BRS and I are the more active-type of vacationers that like to take off on our own adventures.

As for people falling overboard, I'm sure it is the media that is inflating the whole thing. It probably doesn't happen as often as they lead you to believe. It's just like shark attacks. More people are killed on highways or on airplanes than by a shark biting their heads off. But the media always makes a huge deal out of it when it does happen.

Hey!! It only needs to happen once and it would be more than enough. I mean...I would hate to be the unfortunate soul to cross a group of drunk and ederly trouble makers looking to start trouble on a cruise. Once they throw you over...noone will hear your cry for help.
