What about if you did your research on global warming & the impact it has on artic animal life. Your experiment could be based on collecting data in the field & relating the correlation to your hypothesis. That way it's biological & environmental.

This sounds like a lot of work for an undergrad degree!! Good luck BRS! I wouldn't know what to research, but I think the other girls are giving you some good ideas...

Wouldn't that involve me going to Alaska or something? LOL!

Everyone has to do a senior research project or a senior thesis. My adviser wants me to do senior research. Yeah, it does seem like a lot of work. See why I'm having so much trouble with this? I just can't think of anything I could do that pertains to my major/minor without having to travel somewhere. Mr BRS said I should do a study on prairie dogs. LOL!

Hmm... do you think it would be better to try to get into a research program somewhere? Like the state university has one on Bioenergy research. Says you get a $4,500 stipend for the whole summer. On-campus housing is provided, but I wouldn't want to live on campus. I have a house to live in. LOL!

Maybe something about animal testing. You could do an experiment by picking two people and letting them use similar products like face wash and one is tested on animals and the other isn't and then see how the results are for each person. Then your thesis could be like animal testing is unnecessary because products that are tested on animals produce the same results as products that are not. Or something like that?! Just throwing out ideas!!!

I think a research project can be as small or as big as you want it to be. It depends on the scope stipulated by your professor. Think of a something that you can do your primary research locally and all the secondary research material can be collated via the internet, library.

At the meeting they said our hypotheses can't be "junior high" questions. This is why I thought getting into a research program would be nice because you would have someone there to show you how to do everything. I don't know if I could get into a program though. It always seems like whenever I apply for awards or scholarships that someone else is always more deserving of it. A lot of my problem is that I don't have time to participate in a lot of extracurriculars because I have to work. People who review applications like people that are heavily involved at school. They don't consider the fact that I'm married and have other responsibilities.

Here's some info on the research program:

The laboratories involved in our summer program cover a wide spectrum of bioenergy research topics such as the study of nonfood crops for biomass production, metabolic engineering of oilseed biosynthesis, green algae as liquid biofuel production systems, microbial carbon sequestration, biochemical pathways of lignocellulose conversion, and system engineering of microorganisms for biomass conversion. Students with a background in Biology as well as those with training in Mathematics or Computer Science who would like to gain research experience in Biology are strongly encouraged to apply.
I just don't think I'm a good enough candidate, I doubt I would be able to get in.

Don't think like that! Go ahead and apply. You either get it or at worst you don't. There is no harm in trying!

Yeah, I'll apply. I guess I just can't get my hopes up is all. It always seems like everyone else out there is more "deserving" of awards. Like I applied for this scholarship that required an essay about the environment. Well the girl who won wrote about how she helped set up a conservation program in her native country of Sri Lanka. How the heck could ANYONE compete with that?! I guess I'm just too ordinary. Simple struggling to make it to and through college isn't good enough anymore.

Stop being so negative! You have to believe to achieve.

Now that I have gotten the feel-good motivational BS out of the way, seriously. You are just as deserving as anyone else. Perhaps include your resume with the packet so they can see that you work full time. Just a thought. Talk to your advisor, and really get it out there that you are interested in the program. I'd even almost pester the admission board. Brown nose. find out their favorite brand of scotch. Send them flowers. Anything...

You can do it, bRs...you just have to believe in yourself!

I agree with nash. Especially because you are required to do it for your senior year, I see no reason why you wouldn't be deserving enough. I think the research program is the best option. You will probably get the most information there. Will you still be able to work though? What are the program hours like?

The program is full-time, but it has a pretty attractive stipend that goes along with it so working at my normal job may not even be an issue. Research is required, but it is not required to belong to an outside program. You can do research yourself, independently. I know someone who works at the state university, so I might ask her if she knows anything about the program. People from my school have gotten into the program in the past. I just worry about getting my hopes up too high since I'm sure there will be plenty of people applying for it. Oh, and a resume is actually a required portion of the application. Plus you have to have letters of recommendation from professors that have had you as a student. AND a personal statement/cover letter... something that I am terrible at.
