Default I know there are cat lovers here, I need some suggestions!

Okay, my cat has some issues with scarfing his food. He was left outside starving for many months until he came to live with us, so he's a bit impulsive when it comes to his food. The problem is that he scarfs the food down and it gets balled up in his esophagus. Then he stands up and walks away and... BARF! This is almost an everyday thing now. I have tried everything I can think of.
    - Putting his food inside one of those balls that he'd have to roll around to get the food out
    - Putting golf balls in his food dish to slow him down a bit
    - Elevating the food dish so the food has a downward path to his stomach
I even try feeding him more canned food than dry food, but he still throws that up as well. The vet says there is nothing wrong with him, he's just a food scarfer. Mr BRS is angry because there is always kitty barf staining something. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions?

Maybe try feeding him food that isn't too tastey? Or feed him A LITTLE at a time?

I saw those timed feeders that they have a Petco and Petsmart, but they are so freakishly expensive. It's kind of hard to physically feed him little bits at a time since I'm normally not here during the day.
Feeding a cat food that isn't too tasty only results in protest though! ROFL!

I know it sounds nuts, but could you hand feed him? Or is it wet food? Bailey (my dog) for the LONGEST time would not eat at all unless we hand fed him. He is so spoiled. Luckily he has gotten over it, but if you feed your cat by hand at least he won't eat so fast.

He was fat and healthy though. Hmmm

He gets about half wet and half dry. The reason he gets the dry is because its a little easier to give him when I'm on the run. Hehe... Mr BRS would probably think I was crazy if I was hand feeding the cat.

Well it is very crazy to hand feed an animal LOL so I can't say I would blame him. It was the only thing I could think of because of my spoiled little baby!!

Hey bRs, I found these tips:

    1. Give your cat smaller portions of food to decrease his appetitite.
    2. Use a smaller food dish; decreasing the amount of food your cat is fed.
    3. Elevate your cat's food bowl after certain hours.
    5. Feed your pets in separate locations. Sometimes cats will turn feeding time into a competition, thus causing them to eat too much too fast.
    6. Consult your vet for help and advice if all else fails.

    ^^^ Thanks Jess!

I'm taking him to the vet later this afternoon. I'm a bit worried about him because I found this strange lump on his side. So we'll see what the vet has to say about all of this.

When we had one like that I started leaving dry food out all the time. And plenty of it. She gouged a couple of times and then when she realized it wasn't going anywhere, she chilled out and takes her time.

I've tried leaving food out for him all the time, but he just eats and eats and eats and eats. I just couldn't do it because he was starting to get fat.

Nope, I'm getting ready to leave now. I had to find a collar to put on him. LOL! He hates to wear a collar, so I haven't been making him. He's an indoor only cat anyway.
