Default I'll never buy diamonds again

I will never ever pay for a diamond or diamonds from a retail store...They don't hold their value...Maybe i'm wrong, and if I am, please tell me...I don't know if you have to spend thousands for it to be worth it...I know that diamonds last forever, but so do a lot of stones.. I think i'd rather buy another pretty stone instead, like a ruby or something...Okay, so i know that people own like 20000$ rings and stuff...well, my ring was about 8000$ and i went ot a jewelry store that purchases diamonds and they offered me 1200$ i couldn't believe it... and a pawn shop offered me 500$ ...i know these places need to make $ too, but i saw how much they were selling diamonds and it was really cheap...i went to a store in the mall, and i know things in the mall are already overpriced....so it looks like i'm keeping the ring i have... but i am not going to upgrade for our anniversary, i'm just gonna keep what i have..i don't ever wanna buy diamonds again...

My Mom told me the mark-up on jewelry is like 300%, which is ridiculous. I'm not positive that's a exact figure, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Sorry you had that happen to you, that sucks.

Wait a second. Here's some facts you need to think about when pricing your jewelry: Like anything in the world, a diamond is ONLY worth what someone will pay for it. Stones run in and out of fashion too, Rubies were hot in the 80s, Emeralds in the 90s, or what ever. The economy is in the dumper right now too, so a 20K diamond 10 years ago is a 2K stone today. Don't sweat what you were told it was worth, what's it worth to you.

And FYI, diamonds in fact ARE NOT forever. I managed to chip a lovely princess cut while replacing the shank once on a ladies ring. It's not a common happening, but it does happen. And most of the time, if that rarity does occur, the customer never hears about it, the diamond is written up as a loss to the store and replaced at their cost. Just think about the panic if it was commonly known that a diamond is in deed crackable

12 years in a jewelry shop where we did our own casting, sizing, setting, polishing, designing.... you learn a few things

^^ That's really interesting. I model for a women that designs jewelry pieces and I never knew that. She doesn't work with diamonds though, she works with Italian glass and other foreign stones. People pay a fortune for her work.

Rule number one when buying a diamond:
Do your research and shop around!

When Mr BRS were shopping for an engagement ring, we went to TONS of different stores and dealers and compared prices. Become familiar on how the rate diamonds and know that not all diamonds are worth the price on the tag. Places do mark stuff way up, especially jewelry stores at the malls. We ended up getting a good deal by deciding what quality diamond we wanted and approximately what size and then had a store transfer one in from another one of their stores. The lady that helped us just looked through a list and found a diamond that had been hanging around for awhile. Since prices had gone up since then, this one was reality inexpensive since the store had acquired it some time ago.

Excellent point! The shop I worked, it was an independent. We were members of a group called "Truth in Pricing". We never had sales because we never marked up to "sale" at a discount.

I miss that place. The owner has since retired the business, gone back to college and is now a nurse.

^^^ Oh yes, I know all about how stores mark stuff way up so that when they have a "sale" it seems as though they are offering a real discount when really they aren't. This was true for the ring settings too. I had picked out a setting made by Verragio. One store we went to said it cost $3000 (it was platinum and came with two side diamonds). They were the only store in town that carried it, so we searched on the internet. We found a store in another state that said they carried it. When we told them how much this other store wanted for the ring, the person starting laughing. The true retail of the ring was $1300. BIG difference!

    Holy Mark Up Bat Man!

That's just crazy. That's why I loved our lil shop... never felt like a used car salesman. We didn't deal in "junk" either. It was nice things. But then again, the business didn't feed off our sales, we cornered the market on repairs, custom pieces and castings.

wow, I'm sure the ring pop does work since the candy itself is a lot bigger than the diamond itself

    Hello,
You are doing the EXTREME thing.... Paying retail and selling dirt low liquidation prices...

Personally I buy all my diamonds used..... (diamonds are the best stone for retained value.... everything else is 2nd to diamond).

    My wife has a 1.01 VS2 I stone in a platinum setting...

    1) I only ever pay wholesale for the setting.... I just go with classic Tiffany style.
    2) I only go for SI2 and above stones
    3) I only go for J color and better
    4) I try and only go for BRILLIANT CUT STONES (this is the most desired setting - as far as retained value is concerned).
    5) I try and buy for 25% to 33% of appraised value.

    For my wife's 1.01 VS2 J I paid AU$4000- (US$2564-) with the platinum setting.
Insurance appraised value is around AU$14,000- (US$8900-)

A FEW RULES FOR DEALING IN DIAMONDS:-
    1) if they think you are a novice.... but will try and rip you off
    2) you need to know your value ratios..... pawnshops traditional pay 10% of appraised value! ... they will pay up to 25%
    3) 96% of all jewellery sold HAS NO VALUE AT ALL!
    4) you need to have BRILLIANT CUT, SI2 or better, J color or better.....
    5) BEST TO SELL THROUGH A TRUSTED JEWELLER ON CONSIGNMENT.... as the CASH price paid will be rubbish (especially in this Global Financial Crisis).

Thanks everyone...Seriously...i wish i did do research before buying the ring...We were young...and i should have thought about it...malls overprice cookies...imagine diamonds...=) but you can never even tell when a diamond is "second hand" so i think i'd go that way if I do indeed buying jewelry again..Thanks again...ooh..and Guy...ring pop sounds better to me right about now=)
