    Default Another Newbie!

Hello everyone! I found this forum while researching my first "big" handbag purchase. I'm a teacher and I've just never been able to justify anything beyond a handbag from Target or Kohls - I usually spend any spare money on my classroom. I'm teaching some professional development workshops this summer and I've decided I'm going to use part of my paycheck from that to purchase my first designer bag. I visited another similar forum, but it wouldn't let me post. I have lots of questions because I'm not the most fashion forward and I want to make sure my purchase is a smart one. Look forward to talking with you all!

Welcome to TBF! Have you started narrowing things down yet?

You're going to regret opening that can of worms! LOL I'm going to need to stay under 500.00 (which for me is a huge splurge). I'm looking at Coach, Michael Kors and Kate Spade. Since I will probably be carrying this as my main bag all year, I'm unsure about color. I want a fun color like pink or purple but I'm not fashion savvy enough to know how that plays all year. I live in Texas - so it's not like we have an actual winter with snow and stuff.

I know Saffiano leather is supposed to be more durable and the rational part of my brains says I should do that because it's going to see heavy use. BUT, I just don't like the way it feels. I'm also looking for a more casual style. For example, I love the Michael Kors Hamilton, but it's just more dressy than an 8th grade science teacher really needs. Back when I worked in an office it would have been a no brainer. I want a zip top, and something big enough to carry my ipad, nook or a paperback along with the other essentials.

The one bag I tried on in the store and really liked was the MK Sophie in navy, white and luggage. The colorblock made it fun, but it seemed kind of neutral. All thoughts and guidance will be very welcome!!

Pink can be a lot of fun. It is actually a more versatile color than most people think. My fuchsia bag (F+C Mini City) is probably my favorite. I will wear it with all kinds of things. I can pair it with gray, blue, brown, green, etc. Perhaps it works well because I don't mix it with pink, red, or orange?

It you're wanting something on the more durable side, but not stiff like the saffiano leather, then I would suggest a polished pebbled leather. It is softer and it is surprisingly durable. Definitely avoid mat leathers. They are buttery soft, but boy do they scratch easily.

Red handbags are pretty versatile too. They are great for adding color in the winter and they go well with either brown or black coats/jackets.

I'm glad to hear that colors are a viable option! The pebbled leather is what I've been looking at. I'm at a workshop right now (I help with teacher training in the summer) and I'm going to buy my bag as soon as I get home! I can't wait until next weekend! However - this made me think of another question -

Outlet Vs. Store and Store Vs. Online

I've been reading a lot about how the bags at the outlet stores are not nearly the same quality as what you'd find in the store. The articles I've read also say that the markup is huge so that you think you're getting an even better deal. True? Exaggeration? Thoughts?

Also, I've considered purchasing online, but I'm thinking for my first bag, I might want the experience of shopping in the store and getting help from a sales assistant.

From my experience, there isn't much difference quality-wise for Coach and Michael Kors when comparing outlet vs. department store/boutique. I have never been to a Kate Spade outlet store though, so I'm not sure about that. Some styles are made for the outlet stores, but they will also get last season items in that were originally sold in the regular stores.

Online shopping in convenient if you have a very specific bag in mind, but it isn't available where you are. If I'm looking (but not for anything in particular), then I like to be able to touch and feel the merchandise.

I'm heading home from a workshop tomorrow, and I pass an outlet mall that has a Michael Kors store - I'm going to pop in and have a look.
