Default How do you afford your bag addiction?

Ok. Everyone sees things and has to wonder about stuff. Like I work at least 40 hours a week, often 50+ and I am still reduced to saving change when I want to make a purchase. Then I see, lets say, some 19 year old girl who works part time at TCBY running off to buy yet another LV and you just have to wonder when part time yogurt scoopers started making $400 an hour!

So I have to ask the question - how are you guys affording these bags!? Do you have a rich husband who likes to give you what you want? Do you have those parents that just cant say no? Older "benefactor"? Are you making $10 an hour and saving it for like 5 years? Spill the beans!

And I'll share - I'm not just being nosy!

I'm 25, and I work as a nanny. The trade off for making less then I would elsewhere (I used to work in telecom, account management, and government relations) is that its tax free income which helps me get financial aid - finally, after 7 years - and finish up my AA in English and BA in Journalism. The downside is I got roped into a contract and still make about $200 less per week then other girls with comparable experience and skills. That part sucks. Also I have to drive my own car, that also sucks. We live in a pretty affluent area and the cost of living here is much higher than if we lived in a different town so that also sucks. I only carry a few hundred dollars of debt, and I am not about to open a card just to buy a bag. I've never spent over $250 on a bag, but I am saving because I think I deserve a treat, but with my boyfriend being cheap (he has never really bought me anything), and no rich uncles dying in the near future I dont see a Birkin on my horizon!

When I want a bag (thank goodness I have fairly cheap tastes) I wait for a sale even if its out of season, scour eBay, and Google endlessly in a hunt for discount codes. Patience is a virtue for sure when you want to save money. I also omitted things that were costing me valuable bag money - the $200 cut/color every 6 weeks, the $40+ mani/pedi every week, and buying breakfast and lunch at work. That makes dropping $200 without a second thought a lot easier and less guilt ridden.

I'm a 19 year old... Full time college junior... I got my second job ever this summer at Chili's Bar & Grill as a server to boost up and add to my bag account (although it's just a job for the summer)! To answer your question, I have two wonderful parents that make me earn my $$$ with grades and obedience. (OMG, I SOUND LIKE A PUPPY) lol.... I purchase stuff I like (clothes, makeup, shoes, food, bags, and other stuff)... but I do earn it. I'm no spoiled brat....

LOL you've made a good point. Well what do you consider rich??

Well Im 21, a mother of two and a stay at home mom. I wasnt really into designer purses until like 2yrs ago. It first started with Dooney & Bourke, and then Coach, and I just recently purchased my First LV. My husband buys everything for me but he also has his obsessions lol. He's into restoring old trucks. So what we do is if he gets like a $700 motor I get a purse lol. It works for us

His cousin thinks Im spoiled but I see it as a great compromise. What do you think?

everything i have and whatever i buy is all from myself. my parents are divorced and i live with my dad and younger brother right now. my dad doesn't make me pay rent because his parents made him pay. so that is a huge break right there. basically, i'm able to save up and put money away towards my bag fund, which actually won't be added to as much anymore since i will be going back to school. but i work for everything i have, just how like most people do - so that is nothing new.

^^My parents have an arrangement like that, and I will say when I see BF spend $1000 on new tires for his sportscar I feel less guilty about buying a bag!

I already have my college degree, paid for mainly by subsidized student loans that I have down to less than $750. Fortunately for me, when I was in college, I was very broke and poor (because I did something really stupid and got married) and got a great financial aid package and the school I went to wasn't that expensive either. I only had about $3,000 in student loans outstanding when I graduated.

I have always been a pretty good test taker and passed the CPA exam about a year after I graduated, so because I have those initials after my name, I can negotiate better pay. I work for a large manufacturing company in the corporate office as a Senior Financial Analyst...

That said, I make a decent living, but even with what I make I do not see how a single girl would even make it on my income (pay taxes, rent or mortgage, car, insurance, etc) and still buy luxury bags. I can only afford it because of a dual-income situation and a frugal outlook on life. We don't spend money on frivolous things (my entire spring wardrobe cost less than $200) and we don't lead an extravagant lifestyle.

When I really really want a bag, I either have to wait for Christmas or I do some independent consulting work on the weekends. The pay is crap, but I can usually save $1,000 over four months.

I have more Coach than anything, and I usually get those while they are on sale at Dillard's or Macy's. I paid full price for my Carly (Christmas) and the patchwork pouch (because I didn't know better yet). I don't think Coach is too highly priced either.

If I get a LV Monogramoflague piece, it will be more of a collector item that I won't carry much. I will think of that more as an "investment" purchase.

I married well. He's 15 years older than I am, had never been married because he is a workaholic. And he loves to make me happy. He's paid for my college whims, my charities and my excessive taste in clothing and shoes.

My bags and accessories are financed by multiple people. I buy ones that I want that won't put too much of a dent in my back account, my boyfriend has bought me a few bags, and my parents have bought me some bags also. If someone wants to buy you a bag for your birthday/Christmas/graduation, etc., then I see no problem with it. I don't beg for them, but I have a boyfriend who likes to spoil me (because he can afford to) and parents who have gotten my sister and I what we wanted when we deserved it.

Out of all of the "designer" bags I own, I've only paid for one...and that was only half I've paid.

MK astor - bf bought me for xmas
Coach tote - xmas present from my mom
FB bag - I won from here
F+C bag - bf put $130 towards it
Deux Lux bag - bday present from my bf
    I think that's it...everything I have paid for though.
