Default Help needed on handbag project for an engineering class

Hello, my name is Linzey and I am part of a three person group that is trying to create a design for my engineering project. This year our group would like to design and prototype something that will keep bags off of the ground and tables so there is more room to work and so bags do not become dirty. We would like to create it so it is not just for school, but can also be used when out at restaurants. It will be able to hold a large amount of weight and could either be portable or something that can be bought by a school or company to attach to the table. Our goal in the end is to create a working prototype. Below are a few questions asked on a student survey.

4.Would it be easier for you to move if your bag and/or possessions were not on the floor?
Please circle one: Yes or No

5.Would you buy a product was made that could organize and hold possessions for easy access?
Please circle one: Yes or No

6.Would you rather a product that was portable or one that is permanently on a desk?
Please circle one: Portable or Permanent

If you could give us feedback on this problem and what you believe would be good solutions, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read about our problem and I hope you have the time to give your opinion.

yes something like that, but we want to innovate it so that it can hold large bags and backpacks. I know that the purse hooks are well liked and it would be nice to use in schools for backpacks and folders.

There are so many different brands of purse hooks / purse hangers... many that can hold the weight of a backpack.

So you're thinking that this wouldn't be portable? You just want some sort of hook feature on all the desks? I wouldn't mind a hook on the side of those chairs with the attached desktop. I have to set my bag on the floor underneath the chair. Then again, I bet if you stood up the weight of your bag might cause it to tip over.

I know that some can be. I personally have a few that are heavier than my backpack. I just need to know what you think would be some good ideas and what would be something smart to think about when designing it. We want this to be what a consumer would buy. I know of the purse hooks and i know that many people do like them, but some people had complaints on where they could hang them and when they would not work. The idea with portable or permanent is for teachers because many believe that portable hooks could become distractions or dangerous if kids keep them in their backpacks.

Well, what about a hook that is permanently attached then? Maybe have it on a hinge so it can swivel back and forth. It needs to be big enough to hold a variety of straps (some can be pretty wide), but not too big that it would stick out really far. That's why I like the hinge idea, so it can be folded to one side when not in use. Do a lot of girls carry a purse or handbag along with their backpack? I often do. So maybe a double hook where the backpack can hang from a hook directly below another hook for the handbag? Just some thoughts.

That's a really good idea for it. A hinge is one of the best ideas we've heard so far from people. I think permanent's going to be the best way to go and yes a lot of people in school do bring purses and bags, many teachers included.
